Iowa Gasoline Tax Fourth Cent Declared Constitutional
District Judge Har old D. Evans ruled the fourth cent of Iowa's gasoline tax constitutional. L. V. Carlton, an Iowa City real estate agent, failed to obtain a permanent injunction to stop collection. Carlton plans to appeal to the Iowa Supreme Court as the state could gain about 5 million dollars annually if the decision stands. The tax has generated 2,158,668.84 since last July 4 with refunds to non highways users totaling 439,086.42 and 1,719,581.42 held in trust pending the outcome.

Ottumwa Doctor Sentenced to 20 Years for Death
Ottumwa physician L. R. Wellstead, 66, was given a 20 year term in the Fort Madison state penitentiary after a second degree murder conviction. Judge H. C. Taylor imposed the sentence. Wellstead, whose medical license was revoked in 1943, was found guilty of performing an illegal operation last May that killed 23 year old Leona Reeves, a soldier's wife from Ottumwa. He denied involvement with the abortion.

Fatal Fight at Mount Pleasant Hospital
John Schuler aged 71 died at Mount Pleasant state hospital after an altercation with another patient. An attendant found them fighting during the night and a physician treated Schuler who died about 4 45 a m. McCreery of the Iowa State board of control said the death followed the blow from a chamber kept in the room. Both men were mental patients, according to McCreery when questioned Friday.

Fire Kills Elderly Woman. Husband Burned in MAQUORETA Home
Mrs. Dick Eastman, about 85, an invalid, burned to death in her home while husband crippled from a leg fracture two months earlier was seriously burned. Neighbor Harry Stanton discovered the fire and rescued the husband before another attempt for Mrs. Eastman. The blaze destroyed their residence. the husband was taken to Clinton hospital.

Will Hold Airport Conferences in State
The Iowa aeronautics commission will hold four district meetings in January and February in Cedar Rapids Atlantic Spencer and Mason City inviting municipal authorities to discuss airport problems. Dates await hotel reservations. The commission also accepts applications for seaplane bases with water runways of 3 500 feet and buoyed marked areas with no exclusive landing rights.

Reporter Enjoys Sunset Flight Over County In 1946 Aeronica
A reporter rode with Lloyd Scott in a 1946 Aeronica trainer aircraft to test the new plane at the airport. The flight traced Washington and surrounding areas from 1,000 to 2,000 feet as sunset colored fields, creeks, and towns, including Ainsworth Kaloma Wellman West Chester and Washington, before landing as evening lights came on. Scott operates five trainer planes for about 35 students with two instructors nearby.
