Iowa reports 559 411 in unemployment payments for November the highest since March 1940. Claims fell to 3 502 down 12 percent from October with new filings down and war worker benefits tapering off. December usually brings job losses but this year may not rise payments.
Norbert Rawlings of Waterloo was freed from city jail Sunday after posting $500 bond. He was arrested Saturday night after his car struck six cars a truck and a tree causing $2,000 in damages. No injuries were reported.
Iowa City announces an all state public and parochial school essay contest on Iowa to be held in February and March. Frank J. Snider Johnson county superintendent discloses the task. The Iowa development commission and the state department of public instruction sponsor the event. Essays limited to 1500 words with total prizes of 600 dollars.
Four men escaped death when their auto slid down a icy hill and plunged into the Rock River. The driver Isaac Breman Jr., 24, of Rock Rapids, suffered a bruised leg while the other three occupants crawled from a broken window unharmed.
Benson 60 of Manly died after being struck by a westbound car on Highway 9 Saturday night. Driver John Helster of Osage said snowing blinded him. Sheriff says no charges will be filed. Benson leaves a wife and three daughters.
Sergeant Leroy J. Boyce announced in Washington that enlisted men on active duty may apply for any authorized officer candidates school after nine weeks of service. Major Joseph Y. Rahe said the directive gives regular army soldiers a path to commissioned ranks based on mental, physical, and leadership qualifications. Fully qualified applicants may enroll after seventeen weeks of active service.
Washington public schools reopen after a three day influenza vacation. Absentee rate drops 11 percent from Tuesday. 312 of 997 pupils absent. high school improves, Lincoln school worsens. Supt. M. M. Schell among those ill with influenza.
General Douglas MacArthur issued a directive calling for abolition of Japan's feudal land ownership system and directing the government to submit agriculture reform plans to Supreme Allied Headquarters by March 1946. Allied authorities viewed existing proposals as inadequate.
A battalion chemical school for the first battalion Iowa State Guard was held in Washington with units from Fairfield Burlington Davenport Iowa City and Washington. Lt Col Earl Gifford led the course with Lt McGraw and Knoxville service company staff providing instruction. Morning armory session and afternoon airport demonstration followed.
It was announced that the Christmas recess will begin Friday December 21 at four o’clock in the afternoon. School will resume Monday January 7 at 8:30 in the morning after a two week break.
Undersecretary of State Dean Acheson rejected Hurley’s charge that he dynamited U S policy in Iran. Hurley, former ambassador to China, testified before the Senate committee. Acheson attributed the remark to a memo and a young assistants comment. Hurley forced his way to the witness chair during the session.
General George S. Patton suffered a fractured head vertebra and paralysis below the third cervical vertebra after an army truck hit his car near Mannheim. A medical bulletin on Sunday reported the diagnosis made five hours after the accident, with a posterior dislocation of the fourth cervical vertebra. He remained in a first army corps hospital under guard.
Two divorce petitions are filed. Irene Hancock seeks a decree from Stanley Hancock with a marriage at Waynesville Missouri on August 10 1941 and separation since January 1 1944. R C Legget of Fairfield represents her. Helen Crandall seeks divorce from Daniel W Crandall after a June 24 1939 marriage at Trenton Iowa with no children.
Last night was the coldest of the winter with a minimum of three degrees above zero at seven this morning. The day remained cold with the sun visible and the mercury rising slowly. Sunday brought a decidedly wintry mood with a cold wind and occasional snow flurries. the day's temperature reached 28 degrees.
Commander Hajimo Hasimoto, captain of the submarine said to have sunk the Indianapolis, arrived in Washington to testify in the court martial of Captain Charles T. McVay. He arrived under guard at 8:45 aboard a Navy transport plane amid a press blackout. McVay faces charges of not zigzagging in dangerous waters and failing to issue an abandoning ship order.
President Truman accepted the resignation of Undersecretary of the Navy Artemus L. Gates effective December 31. Gates, a New York banker and industrialist, joined government before Pearl Harbor and remained handling mobilization of navy personnel until stepping down. He had earlier served as assistant secretary for air starting September 1941, directing procurement of navy planes and training air personnel.
The plaintiff petitions to restore her maiden surname Helen Hyde as part of a divorce or legal action. Attorney L J Kehoe of Washington represents her in the case filed before the court. The record notes she has no children and mentions a band activity ending November 10 1945.
Dr. W. 8. Kyle, county coroner, was called to Brighton Sunday morning for the death of Floyd Farrier 51 who ended his life by shooting himself at his Brighton home. Once a Washington resident, he had been despondent over illness and troubles at home. The Farrier family formerly lived on a farm near East Pleasant Plain and moved to Brisiton for schooling and farm work. Last Tuesday the rural home burned with much of the furnishings lost. The coroner ruled death by self-inflicted gunshot.
Fieyad bhugene Farrier, born 1894 near Washington, died Sunday at his Brighton home. He married Francelia Dickinson in 1926 and leaves wife and five children Keith Kenneth Kermit Carroll Donna. A daughter Judy Ann died in infancy. He served in World War I and belonged to Edgar C. Davidson post American Legion and the Knights of Pythias. Funeral Tuesday at Brighton Christian church with Rev. R. W. Fillmore officiating. Burial in Hillcrest Cemetery.
General George Marshall testified before the Pearl Harbor investigating committee that in 1941 he believed Japan would bring war with Britain in the Pacific and that the United States could be drawn in. He said this belief affected military proposals for joint British American action if Japan moved west of 100°E or south of 10°N or threatened Korea or Malaya’s east coast.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars will initiate a class of recruits at o'clock Tuesday evening December 11. The meeting will be held at the K C hall.
Firefighters responded to a 1 30 a m blaze at the State cafe near the cigar counter. Cause unclear though a cigarette drop near the cigar case may have ignited paper. About 200 dollars of cigarettes burned. Door glass broken to reach flames. Loss covered by insurance.
By unanimous vote the House passed a concurrent resolution inviting the United Nations to establish its permanent headquarters in the United States. The measure moves to the Senate for final action. The London preparatory commission meeting is cited as the context for urging a U S home for the UNO.
British warplanes destroyed three villages about 50 miles southeast of Batavia in retaliation for an ambush on a 70 vehicle convoy en route to Batavia. The convoy was attacked by over 1,000 Indonesian extremists who rose from holes and hurled hand grenades.
Ralph Howell of Keota sustained severe injuries when caught in a corn picker. His left index finger was amputated at the first joint and two fingers on his right hand were mashed. He was freed after some delay and treated by a local Keota physician.
The funeral of Mrs. Charles Hebner was held Saturday at Sherman's funeral home conducted by Dr. Fred E. Miller. Pallbearers named were Dick Pratt Ralph Shannon Ralph Smith George C Stewart Ray Guest and Tom Berdo. Burial followed in Elm Grove cemetery.
President John L. Lewis of the United Mine Workers blasted the parties in Detroit saying the dishonesty of the company on one side is equalled only by the stupidity of the other. The GM and UAW CIO reps failed to discuss the wage issue after a two hour session and recessed negotiations until tomorrow with the union demanding a 30 percent wage increase affecting 175,000 General Motors workers who walked out 20 days earlier.
Nuremberg reports that Johann von Ribbenströmp suggested Britain might have sought peace with Germany if the Duke of Windsor had become king instead of George VI. He spoke to Hiroji Oshima on February 23, 1941, arguing a potential understanding could exist in exchange for Japan joining the war.
Funeral services for Althea Montgomery were held Saturday afternoon at the L. A. Jones funeral home. Dr. George Kerr and Dr. F. W. Eastwood assisted. Pallbearers included Richard McCleery, Dave Livingston, Dave Elder, Dunham Morrison, Harold Ahrens and George Freshwaters. Burial followed in Elia Grove Cemetery.
