Jess Cook of Iowa died while being taken to Harkness hospital in Osceola after suffering injuries from stumbling into a circular saw he was operating. He is survived by his wife and two married children.
Instruction in actual flying under the civil aeronautics aviation course began at Iowa State College. Larry Litweller of Hastings Nebraska is in charge of 10 men, the maximum allotted one instructor. Forty men have been accepted for training. the other thirty will begin flying when additional instructors are approved.
John Heitman, 40, of Waterloo, is in serious condition at Allen Memorial Hospital after a ton of steel railroad rails fell on his right thigh while he was loading rails at a local factory. The accident occurred when the steel overbalanced and dropped onto him.
The Iowa Liquor Commission faced a veto on funding temperance education as Attorney General's office rules it cannot use funds for a temperance campaign. James Pearson of Shenandoah, a radio preacher and politician, was hired last month to carry out the law’s temperance injunction, per Commission Chairman M. L Curtis.
A Christmas card mailed in 1937 to Miss Wilma Buck from Miss Ruth D. Helt was delayed in the mail. The post office suggested the card was lodged in a seldom used mail sack, causing a two year travel span of 12 miles amid a festive mood.
Des Moines a driver Anse C Bergren 26 reports hearing a scream and finding 3 year old Richard Eubanks caught on his rear bumper. Richard suffered bruises and lacerations to the nose head and fingers. Bergren took the boy home and said he did not know how far the car dragged.
Donald Duruque and Bari King of Waverly were acquitted in a U S district court after Judge George C Scott sustained a defense motion for a directed verdict of not guilty. The indictment charged them with transporting an 11 year old girl from Waverly to Philip South Dakota where officials refused to issue a marriage license despite plans to wed.
More than 100 delegates at the Women of the Moose district conference at the Hotel Chamberlain witnessed the initiation of the Laura Unash Class of 85 candidates. Mrs. Laura Unash of Iowa City attended as guest and in whose honor the class was named. Chapters represented included Fort N edge, Chariton, Ottumwa, and Des Moines.
Wellman area resident A. C. Swartzendruber, 73, died this morning after his clothes were caught in a feed grinder belt while he and his son Omer worked at their home eight and a half miles northwest of Wellman. He suffered a fatal head injury and paralysis on the left side. funeral arrangements are pending word from relatives. He leaves a wife, one daughter, four sons, three brothers, three sisters, and twelve grandchildren. He was a member of the West Union Mennonite church.
The new Lincoln school on South Fourth Avenue is nearly ready for occupancy though the opening date for grade pupils from Wallace and old Lincoln buildings remains indefinite. Board members hope to move pupils within a few days after final instruction details and official inspection are completed. Furniture and equipment are being installed.
County Agent J. W. Chandler outlines two dairy education meetings per date with Farm Bureau county contest associations. Sessions cover feeding, breeding, sanitation and disease, pasture and roughage, with events December 13 in Wellman and Washington and January 11 March 5 dates, plus luncheon and evening sessions.
At a county board of supervisors session the following current holders were reappointed to county posts: W P Rawn as county engineer Will Sickles as custodian of the courthouse Mr and Mrs R D Van Dorin as steward and matron of the county home Howard McBride and Robert S Welte as in charge of county yard and machinery.
Washington junior college accepted an invitation to join the Northeast Iowa junior college conference, expanding membership from six to eight. The eight members are Waukon Independence Maquoketa Elkader Tipton Lennox Muscatine and Washington. Events include a February basketball tournament a March 14 debate at Waukon and a May 11 one act plays at Maquoketa with a May baseball tournament at Elkader. Washington’s participation will depend on student interest this year.
Washington county residents contribute to the 1939 Christmas Seal campaign with a first five day total just over 155. The local drive, led by Mia Haysgreen, urges swift mail contributions and notes no mandate to buy full scales. Officials promise ongoing health updates and emphasize seal purchases as a means to fight tuberculosis.
Howard McBride elected worshipful master of the Washington lodge of Masons for next year. Lee Holland becomes senior warden, Richard Stewart junior warden, Arthur Yard secretary, and George Mc Daniel treasurer. Several other officers will be appointed by the new master before January installation.
Groups of single men and childless married couples crowded City Hall seeking relief as Mayor Burton worked out details of a $1,200,000 relief fund. Welfare Director Fred Ramsey told the crowd that adults can endure hunger longer than children and pledged to restore relief to a full basis, but no definite promises could be made.
Yesterday's 59 degree high in Washington was the warmest this month and last night cooled to 41 degrees. Des Moines reports northwest winds and a forecast of 15 to 25 degrees across regions, marking December's warm spell as Iowa's record since records began with Council Bluffs reaching 72 degrees.
Troops sold 250 tickets at the regular drill for the armory dedication on December 14. The event will feature the regimental band, Governor Wilson, vaudeville acts, and a display of the new building with trooper demonstrations. Reports from canvass by business men indicate strong ticket sales.
Stockholm dispatch says large numbers of Soviet troops concentrate along the Romanian border and the Black Sea. The Moscow correspondent describes Russia as resembling a huge military camp.

Evening viewing ends at ten and a poultry association banquet is set for 6 50 at the Guews house. Rue and quilt show joins the event with numerous entries in feed sack division.
G. K. Teets of Kalona pleaded guilty to shooting a female pheasant west of Kalona and was fined $25. Deputy game warden Tom K. Johnston of Sigourney brought the charges in justice court against Teets and another hunter.
Thomas E. Dewey rallied in Minneapolis urging an end to defeatist policies and the New Deal. He argued America can continue expanding and insisted government must curb abuses while fostering enterprise. He then met farm leaders and business figures seeking support for a 1940 Republican victory.
Des Moines reports Iowa's fourth annual highway safety conference will be held at Iowa State College December 14 and 15 with Gov George A Wilson delivering the principal address. The event is organized by the state department of public safety the Iowa State Safety Council and the engineering extension service. About 10 000 invitations have been sent to county safety officers police chiefs county attorneys and safety groups in Iowa and neighboring states for the event which begins with an informal dinner.
Finnish army headquarters charged that Russia fired poison gas shells on the eastern front and that Finnish troops fight back strongly. Eleven Finnish soldiers were poisoned north of Lake Ladoga. Moscow claimed a breakthrough which Helsinki said did not occur. Heavy snows aid the defense of the Mannerheim line. Britain, the United States, and Germany speeding war materials to Finland to resist Soviet aggression. Finland welcomes foreign volunteers and notes letters from ex Spanish International Brigade members outraged by the invasion.
German raids expanded from Paris area to the Moselle region in dawn to general skirmishing. The fighting marked the first widespread generalized parol action on the front with heavy patrol operations and dozens of dawn raids.
Coffman of Richland elected to teach language and science for grades four through six at Stewart School filling the vacancy from Martha Timmerman’s resignation. Training at Iowa State Teachers College and eleven years rural teaching experience. Miss Coffman currently in Washington and will assume duties Monday. Mrs Brindley substitutes during interim.
