Reported clash involves a cavalry unit clashing with Viet Cong forces nine miles northwest of Bong Son. Guerrillas had used the Bong Son Plain area to attack villages and U.S. bases and disrupt roads. A platoon of 37 guerrillas and a 15 year old girl nurse were involved in the disclosure.
Sugar Creek Mennonite Church members near Wayland processed 17 hogs at the Old Order Amish Canning House north of Kalona to canned meat for relief. About 50 people butchered, with teams handling cooking, boning, sealing, and can labeling for distribution by the Mennonite Central Committee. Eicher and Wayland churches plan more pork processing this week and next.
Johnson County attorney says Tuesday demonstration at the University of Iowa was planned and coordinated with urban guerrilla tactics and warns more arrests may follow. One nonstudent, Denny Ankrum, was arrested after addressing about 100 at the Memorial Union.
Staley announced at the NFC convention that an all commodity holding action would begin within 40 days, starting with grain and followed by livestock and dairy. California officials moved to restore order after a mob of about 350 militant students and invited nonstudents stormed the San Francisco State College administration building. Police and campus leaders closed the 17,000 student campus after looting, arson attempts, and vandalism, with classes dismissed and the campus evacuated.
Riverside marshal Dale Rath stopped a car at 12 30 a m when the occupants failed to show licenses. Burglary tools were found. Two men, James Harper 26 and Richard Harper 21, were parole violators from Anamosa and held for Scott County officials. Bill Willers 28 of Davenport was released.
Capetown South Africa UPI reports Louis Washkansky 55 who had a heart transplant showed slight wobble but was wheeled from his sterile room to the hospital's radiotherapy room. He waved to nurses and the oxygen tent was briefly removed for treatment per a hospital spokesman.
Mrs Ezra Smith has been elected county vice chairman of the Democratic Central Committee at a county central committee meeting Wednesday evening. Mrs Carolyn Levy submitted her resignation from the post, citing other duties and lack of time to devote to the job.
United Press International reports Iowa will see partly cloudy skies and a warmer day with Friday highs rising. Overnight lows are forecast from 15 to 22 degrees.
