The 1964 Journal Watch award, honoring top carrier service, went to John Widmer of 715 North Marion Avenue at a YMCA dinner with 23 carriers and parents from Washington Ainsworth Brighton and Wayland. Second and third place prizes went to Jim Knight and Jim Cnossen tied with Mike Loveless, plus five additional silver dollars for other carriers and certificates from Inland Daily Press Association. A table tennis tourney and bingo wrapped the evening.

L Ivan Norton, a former Washington businessman, died in Riverside California after illness following a stroke and heart attack. He had moved to California nine years ago after living in Muscatine and Ottumwa. His funeral is set for Wednesday morning in California. Survived by his widow at 10513 Magnolia Ave Arlington CA, his son Keith and a sister preceded him in death.

Viet Namese officials hailed a victory in a swamp battle 143 miles southeast of Saigon where 115 U Minh II guerrillas were killed, with 23 government soldiers and 50 wounded, and six American advisers injured. Taylor discussed new war strategies and possible air strikes on Viet Cong sanctuaries in North Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh trail routes through Laos. He stressed continued U.S. support for South Vietnam’s fight against externally supported insurgency.
