Mississippi probes charges after 21 in civil rights case
In Meridian Mississippi the state weighs murder and conspiracy charges against 21 men arrested by the FBI in the slayings of three civil rights workers. Arch suspects include a sheriff and deputy. all were freed on 5000 bond. The federal case charges 19 with conspiring to violate civil rights and two with withholding information. A Dec 10 preliminary hearing was set.

Otto Jay Emery Jr. 46, son of Otto and Belva Emery, died suddenly of a heart attack at work near his Matthews home in North Carolina. Burial will be in Charlotte. Born in Richland on September 19, 1918, he was vice president of Kato Mercandising Co. in Matthews. Surviving are his widow Betty Johnson of Minneapolis, two daughters, three sons, and his Richland father visiting since November 1. His mother preceded him in death. other relatives live in Brighton, Richland, and Ollie.
