Winter presents City of Charles City with heavy snow burdens. Mayor W. K. Carr reports 380 workers clearing streets while all dump sites are full. Another snowfall adds to a week totaling twenty one inches.
Des Moines report says winter already began to deprive birds and wildlife. I T Bode Atate, state fish and game warden, urged saving birds now before they starve. He warned the coming winter could require extensive help for game and song birds.
15 year old high school girl Doris Paul will receive honors in Muscatine as fellow Four H members, local businessmen, farmers, and Farm Bureau members gather to applaud her health champion achievement.
A United Press survey of members of the 46th Iowa general assembly signals a likely battle over moving beer licensing power from municipalities to the state. The question of where authority rests appears contentious as legislators weigh the proposal.
More than 100 ex service men marched to the Des Moines county courthouse demanding immediate aid for their families. An order issued at 9 am removed relief jobs from world war veterans and directed them to seek further aid from the county soldiers relief commission.
A contest is filed by State Representative A. H. Miller of Libertyville alleging irregularities affected the Jefferson County race for state representative. Sanford Zeigler Jr., a Republican, won by 65 votes per the official canvass.
Des Moines report says Charles L Cook of Clinton Iowa pled guilty to selling Justice Department jobs at 33 75 each. He was sentenced to one year and a day in federal prison with a two year supervised release. He claimed there would be no more similar acts backed by a large family.
Miss Margaret Davilson reports official notice from Washington that a new star route starts December 14 from Mt. Pleasant to Crawfordsville. The trip carries only first class mail newspapers and parcel post for special handling, with stops at Swedesburg Olds Winfield Wyman and Crawfordsville, returning via Wayland Olds Winfield Swedesburg.
Southeast Iowa Christian churches plan a two day convention on December 12 and 13 in the southeast quarter of the state. Rev Vernon H Carter announced the event expected to draw local Christians and ministers wives for a fellowship banquet and luncheon. Speakers include James A Dillinger state secretary Des Moines Hawley secretary Indianapolis and Dean J Caldwell Drake Bible College with Ray Rice addressing.
Campaign expense reports for the November general election are filed. GOP candidates report 111.60 receipts and equal expenditures with no treasury balance, plus 10.07 on hand at start and 1.53 dividend from a closed bank and 10 from ten county Republicans. Notable items include Robert R. Noonan 52.64 for ads and gas and Harry Whittaker 17.95 for ads and supplies. Miss Ethel Grecian’s expenses are clarified as 21.40 for ads plus 10 to the county committee totaling 21.40.
James Z. Haller 75 died after a several day illness. Funeral plans pending at Catholic church in Wellman. Haller born August 12 1852 in Peoria Illinois, survived by seven children and two brothers with one sister deceased. Wife Addie Deising died June 15. County board appointed R D Van Dorins as steward and Matron of county home. Dr C W McLaughlin named physician. G H McBride and Robert Welte to operate road machinery. Board adjourned December meeting after approving pension expenses.
In a studio cafe talk Tuesday Sir Kingefora Smith lauded navigator Gatty as a great navigator who cross the ocean and guided the Australian to Australia. The discussion stressed the importance of navigation astronomy over engines, noting many can fly but few map the sea.
United Press survey across 25 cities shows Christmas trade running up to 53 percent higher than last year with an average 16.8 percent rise. Merchants report demand for jewelry, oriental rugs, furnishings, lamps, and leather goods, while Washington sees early start and about 3 percent above 1933.
Washington recorded its coldest night of the season with a minimum of nine degrees above zero, five degrees lower than the prior low. Temperatures are rising today as forecasters expected, with no precipitation or notable weather events tasked for the day.
Dr. E. T. Wickham longtime Washington county physician died yesterday at his daughter's home in Waterloo. He practiced 40 years in Ainsworth and Washington and served in the US Army Medical Corps during World War I. Funeral at 2 pm Saturday at Sherman’s funeral home with Dr. W. W. Bowers officiating. Burial at Ainaworth. Survived by daughter Mrs. Birdsall and two brothers H. H. Wickham and T. Y. Wickham Jr. Weather notes report the state’s cold spell at ten degrees below zero locally.
Edward J. Havel purchased the remaining assets of Partners and Merchants Savings bank at Haskins in a public sale held yesterday afternoon in the courthouse. His bid was 245 dollars. The sale, overseen by M. T. Vox, a state banking examiner, disposed of miscellaneous assets to hasten the receivership closure. Dividends of 85 percent were paid to depositors. The assets included notes, overdrafts, stocks, cash items, bank fixtures, unpaid stock assessments, judgments, claims, and a Wisconsin real estate parcel the receiver could not liquidate otherwise.
Albert Schmidt aged sixty six years died at his Riverside area home after a paralytic stroke. He was a lifelong Riverside resident, married to Theresa Hausler, with three children Amelia August and Mrs. Anna Thomann surviving plus his widow. Funeral plans were not announced.
Morgan aged 85 died in C'lbert Arkansas. He had built a coffin for himself fourteen years earlier as a personal project and final resting idea.
Refugees cross the frontier as tensions flare between Hungary and Yugoslavia over expulsions. Families separated and elderly deported amid mass migration blamed on reprisal for the assassination of King Alexander. At Geneva, Yugoslavia condemns Hungary as border clashes are averted by Hungarian restraint.
Des Moines December 7 Governor Herring appointed RE J Fueling of New Hampton chairman of the Democratic state central committee to the vacancy on the state highway board caused by the death of A Maine of Waterloo.
H J Cuddeback of five and a half miles west of town died at noon today after years of ill health. Funeral services are 1 20 Sunday at Shermans Funeral Home led by Rev M LeFever. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Survived by widow two children two grandchildren and one great grandchild and a brother G D Cuddeback of Pairbury Illinois. Born January 14 1856 in New York, he lived in Livingston and McDonough counties before moving to Washington county in 1905. He married Estella Nethergall October 14 1880.
