Berlin reports an anti communist vote in the west Berlin city elections. Hans Witte resigns from the Berlin electrical administration board amid a power sector split. Workers threaten to strike but pause walkout as shifts change. 1,586,090 ballots cast, with women voting heavily against communism.
Bill Anderson son of Mrs Vera Anderson of Washington was treated at Washington county hospital for a fractured knee cap after his motor scooter collided with a car on the east side of the square Saturday at ten. Harold Wehr drove the car backing from a parking place. Anderson said he did not see the car in time. Jim Dempsey, a scooter passenger, was uninjured.
Authorities report at least 14 dead in various weekend plane crashes with fears the toll could rise to 21. Victims include Navy men in Salinas California, youths near Dubuque Iowa, a Wisconsin business leader and companions, and individuals in Illinois and other states.
Mr and Mrs Charles Crossett and Dennis visited at the Roy Crossett home in Wellman on Sunday, sharing a family in town moment.
Washington teenagers celebrate the completion of a new Youth Center hall on the east side of the square. Volunteers powered the project after an October Automobile and Appliance show funded the effort. The bright interior features Disney Fantasia murals, a soda bar, fluorescent lighting, and mirrored walls as the youth prepare to host activities.
A youth center project in Washington was driven by area high school students who refurbished the swool table and organized activities in a small hall. The Recreational Council formed a committee including Mrs Golia Miller Harold Mangold and Mrs Milo Steele jr to explore the group, with initial meetings in the city hall Legion rooms.
Survivors of a U S Air Force four engined transport ditching 40 miles southwest of Johnston Island were sighted on a life raft in the Pacific. Thirty seven aboard. Navy patrol boat to reach survivors around 10:20 a m CST as helicopters and planes circle the area. Captain Allen Toltz, who first sighted flare signals, reports one raft visible in darkness.
The Washington area saw 25 degree lows with strong winds Sunday into Monday. Two planes at Washington airport were torn free and damaged. owners include Lloyd Scott and the Gingerich brothers at Wellman. Some telephone lines were downed by fallen branches north of Washington.
A midwest storm causes at least eleven deaths in plane crashes and accidents. The system moved from the Rockies through the central states to the Great Lakes, with 60 mph winds, 12 degree temperature drops, and widespread power and telephone outages.
Graveside rites conducted Saturday at 1 30 in Valley cemetery for Allen LeNoy Black with Rev. T C Polk officiating. Sherman’s Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Des Moines Iowa reports clear skies tonight and tomorrow with cloudiness in the extreme south and colder air in the far east. Daytime high 22 in the northwest to 40 in the southeast, tonight’s low 12 to 16 northwest to 20 southeast, tomorrow’s high 28 to 35.
Graveside services for Mrs Ira M Sproull were held at Elm Grove cemetery Saturday afternoon at four o clock with Dr George Kerr officiating. Pallbearers were Dave Livingston Sr Dave Livingston Jr Robert Burtwin William and Dave Day. Shermans Funeral Home arranged the services.
Funeral services for William E Sickles were held Sunday afternoon at 2 30 o clock at the Jones funeral home with Rev D A Cochran in charge. Pallbearers were Stan Kiesey Walt Kiesey Fred Bourgeois Ned Morrow Russell Knott. Employees of the courthouse attended in a group. Burial followed in Elm Grove Cemetery.
William Dunbar of Brighton paid a fine of 225 and costs after pleading guilty to intoxication before Mayor G. E. Mace in city police court. Dunbar was arrested Saturday by city officer W. T. Clark.
Paul Snakenberg was elected worshipful master of Washington Lodge No. 26 A F and A M at the annual election in the Masonic temple last week. Other officers named were William F E Howell senior warden George Baker junior warden George McDaniel treasurer and W C Bell secretary. Installations will occur early next year after year end meetings.
More than 200 Farm Bureau workers prepare to meet at the M C A tonight for the annual county drive. Joe Jones chairs the meeting with C M Wilson as speaker and several local office staff addressing the group. Edmundson notes 22 percent of county members already joined for 1949 and hopes every farmer is invited before township checkups in December to reach a 1 200 member goal.
The voice of Dr. Fred E. Miller will be heard each weekday morning at six over WMT in Cedar Rapids. Miller prepared transcripts of the talks last week, though the programs air this week. He will conduct the Matins program.
Legion Will Plan Membership Drive at regular meeting in Legion rooms city hall eight o'clock Tuesday evening. Commander George Baker notes post has about one third of Iowa quota and urges all members to attend. Legion drive nationwide ongoing with Washington efforts.
November reports from the Washington employment office show thirty six job placements amid sixty seven openings listed by employers. Mrs Lay notes eighteen farm worker positions and three farm hands remain, with additional openings for office workers telephone operators and waitresses.
Mrs. Merle Twinam seventh district committeewoman Iowa Farm Bureau will be heard on Martha Duncan's radio program on station WOI in Ames Tuesday afternoon at 9 44. She will be assisted by Mrs. Hedges from Des Moines county and a Muscatine county homemaker to summarize highlights of the Des Moines meeting.
Rev Arthur Peters, former West Chester and New Haven pastor, conducts special services this week at New Haven Baptist Church. He is pastor of First Baptist Northwood Iowa and seeks a Doctor of Theology this year. Mrs Peters and daughter Betty Louise join. services nightly at eight through Sunday December 12, with Mrs Peters assisting music. Mr and Mrs Alex Gevoek were visitors in Des Moines today.
