In Paris the United Nations General Assembly moved to adjourn one week hence after a three month debate. The political committee approved a weakened conciliation plan for Arabs and Jews and a three nation commission under Big Five control. The assembly must still obtain a two thirds vote to carry the proposal.
Commander George Baker of Leon Beatty American Legion urged post members to attend the regular business meeting Tuesday at eight in the city hall Legion rooms. Plans for the annual membership drive will be discussed along with other important business as only one more meeting remains this year.
Three days of heavy activity at the counts treasurer office led to 607 automobile licenses 114 full year commercial 4 half year commercial 72 farm trailer plates and 22 regular trailer licenses sold. W E Howell notes no other year matched early December volume and about 200 customers per day kept staff busy.
Marion Ferguson senior liberal arts student at the state university of Iowa and son of Mrs. Lydia Ferguson of Washington has been named one of 18 nationwide recipients of pre doctoral atomic energy commission fellowships. Prof J I Bodine reports unanimous acceptance for the fellowship with stipends ranging from 1500 to 2400 dollars per year. Ferguson plans graduate study in atomic energy and biology at the University of Chicago after February graduation.
The Red Brick school rhythm band performed before 475 at the Y.M.C.A. gym highlighting rhythm numbers and a drone of vaudeville acts. Bob Bruty imitated a rooster in two numbers while Marilyn Collett danced with baton and Judy Thompson announced the program. The show featured a Christmas segment, ventriloquism by Bob Baxter with Perey, and a wreath drill to close.
House investigators plan to resume Communist espionage hearings using microfilmed papers from Whittaker Chambers. Robert E. Stripling cited subpoenas for depositions in Baltimore tied to the Hiss-Chambers controversy and noted possible documents in Hiss handwriting.
Cedar Rapids police investigated a puzzling cash find involving used car dealer Del Connally his wife and his brother after discovering about 21 746 in a garbage can and missing more than 7 000 from an attic. Connally said his uncle Tom Harrington lent him money for safekeeping and the trio were questioned and released.
Washington county teachers will meet at the high school Monday evening December 6 at 7 20 for a general teachers meeting. Leona Kos, president of the county council of teachers, announces the gathering. Don Foster of the Town State Education association will be the principal speaker. Brush will be furnished by Mel Hill.
Rescue vessels searched Hangchow Bay for survivors after the 1000 ton Kiangya steamer sank near Shanghai. The ship carried up to 2150 listed passengers but rumors place as many as 4000 aboard. About 1000 survivors arrived in Shanghai aboard reserve craft. reports say many injured. Some ships, including a U S Navy vessel, helped recover the dead and wounded.
A Social Security representative from Burlington will visit Washington on Wednesday December 1948 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Washington county employment office 208 West Washington Street to assist with filing survivors insurance claims and to issue social security numbers.
Several weeks before his departure for Ireland on October 4, he claimed not to have counted the money. Police reported the cash, found in a garment can in a cloth sack, ranged from $1 to $100 denominations and Connally offered no explanation for keeping it in the attic.
China reports General Chiang Kai-shek resending 100000 troops from central China into the Pengpu sector to crush Communist forces threatening Nanking. General Soong Hsi-liang leads four army groups, while Gen Tu Yi-ming commands three more groups totaling 180000 troops striking northern lines.
Des Moines reports nine Iowans indicted by a federal grand jury for failing to register for the peacetime draft. Indictments returned yesterday. identities withheld until arraignment. The jury also brought criminal indictments against eight others.
Funeral services for Donald Richard Fladung returned serviceman son of Mr and Mrs John Fladung Wellman will be held Thursday at 9 30 am at St Marys Church Keota with Rev Kember officiating A rosary will be at his parents home south of Wellman Wednesday at 8 pm He was killed in action January 7 1945 in the Battle of the Bulge while serving with the paratroopers He belonged to the 19th Glider Infantry 17th Airborne Division born January 22 1925 in Wellman attended Wellman schools and graduated Keota High School in 1942 inducted July 9 1943
Gen. Lucius D. Clay, American military governor for Germany, said Western powers could recognize the Soviet sector puppet government in Berlin if a settlement of the entire Berlin dispute with Russia is reached. He noted a single currency and ongoing negotiations could still yield a joint settlement, despite the split city.
Sheriff H. M. Putnam and deputy R. W. Fillmore headed to Ottumwa to return Paul Jordan of Washington. He was arrested at 2:30 this morning and charged with stealing Dan Christiansen’s auto parked near a Washington hotel at about 1:00. Ottumwa police detained him after spotting car trouble.
Increasing clouds and a brief period of light rain then snow are expected west tomorrow. Temperatures turn colder, with lows from 32 to 40 degrees. Friday highs around 57 and lows near 26.
The Washington post office installs a new stamp vending machine in the lobby enabling residents to buy one and three cent stamps when the stamp window is closed. Postmaster J Brown announces the machine accepts nickels or dimes and dispenses stamps equal to the coin value during lobby hours each day and on Sundays.
The International Livestock Exposition ended with record attendance and high prices for blue-rlood livestock. University of Wyoming’s grand champion wether lamb sold for 37.40 a pound, while Tip Top Farms of Flora Indiana won the grand champion Hampshire. Wilson & Co. bought the grand champion Chester White for 2.25 a pound, Swift & Co. claimed the reserve grand hog, and Col Roy Johnson auctioned the record steer for 15.75 a pound. West Chester school reports 38.18 raised in the CROP drive.
