Death sentences handed to five Germans in Soviet court
A Russian appointed German court in Berlin sentenced five Germans to death for economic sabotage tied to black market trading with the western sectors. Three were sentenced in absentia, while three others received 15 year terms and one 19 years. one defendant was acquitted. Western officials see the trials as intimidation to deter western trade. About 450 Bewag workers walked out in protest, reporting searches by Communist police as they left the Soviet sector. The Soviet military administration condemned the western sector elections as unconstitutional and invalid.
