Retail stores in Washington will stay open evenings Monday through Friday starting December 9 to aid Christmas shoppers. The extra hours are an annual pre-Christmas feature. Some stores also plan Sunday afternoon hours through the holiday season.
A telephoned message claimed a bomb in the basement of Washington High School led police and firemen to sweep the building shortly after noon Wednesday. No device was found and classes resumed as students were kept in the gym area during the search.
Peter Peterson of Yoeratk Co. clothing store was named chairman of the Retail Merchants Bureau of the Washington Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday. He succeeds Jack Eaton as his term expires. The meeting focused on planning the retail sales calendar for the first six months of next year.
UPI reports District Judge John J. Sirica refused the Watergate defendants permission to depose former President Richard Nixon starting Jan 6 and ordered the trial to continue. He did not rule on his idea of written questions subject to a medical panel. The judge noted the trial could finish by Christmas, though Nixon’s lawyers said he may not be ready.
The ARC schedules its annual Christmas party for Tuesday December 10 at 6 30 p m at the Washington County Care Facility. The group seeks cookie donations and asks helpers to bring treats to the County Home or to 718 Bastard by 4 p.m. next Tuesday.
Hendersons say a Nov story wrongly implied a military or police search for their son Douglas 22 linked to a marijuana package. They state no search or manhunt occurred and Douglas was never charged, while Cynthia Henderson’s drug possession case was dropped Oct 2.
Senate Democratic Leader George Kinley said Democrats will propose a two year program ahead of Gov. Ray priorities. He named William Palmer and Kenneth Scott as temporary chairmen of key committees and noted a special election December 30 could determine Senate control. He urged early rules debate on lobbyist disclosures.
Salix Iowa residents Van L Chadwick and Diane Lindley were arrested in Carlsbad New Mexico after being linked to a triple murder in Sioux City Iowa. Chadwick faces three murder counts while Lindley is held on homicide accomplice charges. Investigators linked the victims Ernest Isom Jr Freta Bostic and Jesse James Hanni to the couple through a shared construction job and from teletype notices from Iowa. The murders occurred early Monday and the weapon is not yet found.
Mostly sunny and warmer this afternoon with highs around 35 to 40. Tonight remains fair and not as cold with lows near 30. Friday brings increasing clouds and a slight chance of rain with highs between 40 and 45. South to southeast winds will be 8 to 15 mph. Probability of precipitation is 20 percent Friday.
The nation's 120,000 striking coal miners voted to accept a new three year contract by 56 to 44. Arnold Miller, head of the United Mine Workers, said some miners would return to work Friday with production resuming by Monday. The pact gives a 64 percent pay and fringe benefit boost over the term.
The House passed a bill restricting new federal funds to enforce busing or reassignment for school desegregation. HEW would be barred from enforcing 1964 Civil Rights Act desegregation. Senate may differ. The measure, 212 to 176, targets funds used to compel race based school actions and includes other budget items and political notes.
Des Moines legislators scrutinize eliminating federal income tax deduction on Iowa state returns. Sen. William Palmer drives the reform push, arguing it would increase tax progressivity and shift $55 million to $60 million in state revenue. Palmer notes bracket adjustments needed to shield middle earners from impact.
The Mehrabad International airport main terminal roof collapsed under overnight snow in Tehran. Civil Aviation Board director Hushnang Arabi revised estimates to at least 60 people buried in the rubble, with many dead. A Lufthansa spokesman in Bonn placed fatalities at around 50, as passengers awaiting flights remained trapped.
A Martin Air DC8 crash near Colombo Sri Lanka killed all 184 Indonesian pilgrims and seven Dutch crew. Rescue teams found scattered wreckage as villagers recalled a sound like an earthquake. Dutch investigators and the airline president flew to Colombo to probe why the plane plummeted after descending from 8000 to 2000 feet.
Cedar Rapids ICPA Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Robert H. Lounsberry presented Linn County Humane Society with the state's first animal welfare license under a new law. The program licenses or registers anyone selling pets, with inspections by the Department of Agriculture.
