In Tegucigalpa armed forces commander Oswaldo Lopez Arellano seized full powers in a bloodless coup ousting President Ramon Ernesto Cruz. Des Moines Unveils New Downtown Revitalization Plan
Des Moines and the Greater Des Moines Chamber of Commerce outline a new image plan featuring a performing arts theater, a cultural plaza, a convention center, a hotel complex, and a parking garage on the west side. East side development includes an old town district, a legislative hotel, and residential facilities to meet downtown housing demand. The plan proposes a river loop road, pedestrian malls, and a possible rapid transit system to improve movement and access. City officials stress the ideas are in early stages with no land purchases, aiming for possible completion in three to five years. A council debate emerged over a $42,000 downtown study, with Olson agreeing to delay action and discuss details.
