The Evening Journal corrected a yesterday spiraling lice epidemic rumor in local schools. A nurse stated contrary to popular belief the lice are not caused by filthiness. The Washington post office will stay open until 5 p.m. on Saturdays December 9 and 16 for pre Christmas patron services.
Doyle Jarrard will represent Washington County Farm Bureau at the national convention in Los Angeles December 10 to 14. Harold Rees of Crawfordsville will represent Louisa County Farm Bureau at the meeting. Both men are official delegates from their county groups.
The Washington County 4 H Officer Training School will be held Saturday December 9 at the Christian Church in Washington. Council members conducting sessions include Roger Adam Craig Dare Nancy Mineart Peggy Moore Kathy Vittetoe Lorna McCoy Mike Houseal Mike Quinn Jeff Temple and Cathy Walker. Training runs 9 a.m. to 11 30 a.m. to help 4 H members conduct club meetings.
Larry Hysell a Washington High senior son of Mr and Mrs Truman Hysell of Washington is among First District youths nominated by Congressman Fred Schwengel to the U S Military Academy They have met high standards and will face a competitive selection for their academy appointment
Swartzendruber and Holeton collided on Highway 22 a half mile west of Kalona Tuesday at 5 20 p m. Swartzendruber pulled out in front of Holeton driving west bound. Damage about 1750 dollars. Holeton treated for cuts and bruises by a Kalona doctor.
A rural West Liberty girl, Rita Duncan, 12, was struck by Clark Woodburn, 82, of Town City, as she returned to a school bus after assisting a kindergarten pupil across the road. The Iowa Highway Patrol reported the accident occurred one to two miles south of West Liberty.
Voters approved a $475,000 bond issue to fund more elementary classrooms and a high school gym for Central Community Schools. The measure passed by a close margin, highlighting community support for expanded facilities.
United Press International reports icy roads and blizzards sweeping the nation. From the Sierra Nevada to Oregon and the Midwest, heavy snow, subzero temperatures, and arctic blasts disrupt travel, force power cutbacks, and strain hotels and highways with numerous accidents and warnings across several states.
Farm prices surge with soybeans up to 4.08 per bushel and corn 1.60 per bushel on Chicago exchanges, hogs at 30 per hundredweight in Southern Iowa, and oats at 1.10. Cattle slide to 33.60 amid higher feed costs. Local markets run below Chicago but strong, with forecasts of a 1972 record farm income year. Jim Frier projects continued bullish prices and discusses tax moves, equipment purchases, and potential 1973 impacts.
Iowa three state universities report favorable on campus beer sales with no major issues. At the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa the program runs on a break even basis and serves as a convenience for students to visit and study rather than drink.
Former President Harry S Truman, 88, remained seriously ill in Kansas City as doctors assessed worsening pulmonary congestion. His wife was at his bedside and hospital officials cautioned that vital signs were unstable and recovery uncertain.

Rex Emerson reports a dinner encounter with Bing Crosby and Phil Harris at the Holiday Inn Amanas in Williamsburg. Emerson joined them with hunting in the area for filming of The American Sportsman on ABC. Crosby and Harris mingled with fans as autographs flowed amid casual conversation about hunting and football.
Iowa City Democrat Ed Mezvinsky plans three regional offices in Iowa's 1st District. Offices will be in Iowa City Davenport and Burlington to serve about one third of the district's 470000 residents. The staff will act as an investigative arm to connect constituents with Washington.
Mrs. Almed Thompson and her Lincoln Elementary fifth graders completed Project Million after 2.5 years. They collected 1,000 jars and 1,000,000 soybeans to visualize a million objects, with beans donated by Greg and Kevin Horn and Pat Gaffey. the display fills shelves in the classroom and will be kept to illustrate large quantities.
