Gemini 7 mission proceeds toward a 2 1 2 p m EST liftoff with Frank Borman and James Lovell aboard the Titan 2 carrier rocket. Forecasters say conditions appear favorable for orbital operations while recovery ship USS Wasp stands by 438 miles southeast of Bermuda.
Three Ku Klux Klansmen faced 10 year prison terms for violating civil rights linked to the case of contegrationists, including slain Detroit housewife Viola Liuzzo. The defendants were convicted on federal conspiracy charges after a deadlocked jury received a dynamite instruction and later returned guilty verdicts.
Vice President Hubert Humphrey denounced charges that Johnson is a murderer for Vietnam war actions as unpatriotic and indecent. He vowed to stay firm in South Vietnam until communists are ready to negotiate a meaningful peace and challenged critics to rebuke such claims. About 400 antiwar pickets demonstrated outside the Fairmont Hotel as Humphrey spoke at a $100-a-plate Democratic dinner.
A car crash at a T intersection two miles north of Baldwin Iowa killed three people including driver Ronald Benhart 22 of Oxford Junction and passengers Duane Weimerskirch 22 of Lamont and Lolita Garside 16 of Wyoming. Speed was cited as a factor in the early morning accident around 2:50 a.m. The deaths raised Iowa 1965 traffic fatalities to 708, compared with 760 a year earlier.

A two car crash on Highway 218 south of the Ainsworth junction involved Dennis Crone and Nicanor Vigil, both hospitalized with injuries. A third car driven by Harold A. Jacobs struck the Crone vehicle after the initial collision. Investigating officers consider charges against Vigil for head on collision and Jacobs for failing to heed red lights. Damages were about 1000 dollars each for the first two cars and 250 dollars for Jacobs.
Russell J. Gilkey, formerly of Columbus Junction, died Friday in Phoenix Arizona. Born in Columbus Junction to Harry M. and Laura Johnston Gilkey, he was married to Zesta Hafner of Letts. Survived by wife, a son Donald and a daughter Joyce of Phoenix, and three sisters Mrs. William Maxwell Crawfordsville Mrs. Evelyn Coombs Brookfield Ohio and Mrs. Corinne Germond Masury Ohio.
Duane Earl Pope, condemned to die for the Big Springs bank robbery and triple murder, vows to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. Defense calls the verdict a miscarriage of justice while prosecutors label him a cold, methodical killer in control of his faculties. Pope faces execution at 11 30 a.m. March 3, 1966.
Dwight Murray was named worshipful master of Washington Masonic Lodge No 26 at the annual election held Friday evening. Other officers are Donald K. Orr senior warden Virgil Davis junior warden Edgar E. Stewart treasurer and Paul Snakenberg secretary. These and the appointive officers will be installed at an open meeting in January.
