West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer visited West Berlin to rally support against communism and urge high turnout in Sunday's city elections. Mayor Willy Brandt hosted a civic welcome as Adenauer, 82, aims to unify Germany and bolster CDU influence in a contest with SPD rival Lemmer.
A 60 year old woman robbed a midtown Manhattan First National City Bank of 3000 by threatening to splash acid. She waited in line, handed a note and a glass of liquid, then left as guards reacted. Bank teller Louis Basile filled a bag and complied before alarms sounded. No trace of the suspect was found.
President Eisenhower approves a compromise giving NASA the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena while the Army keeps control of its missile programs and Von Braun group. NASA will oversee eight satellite launches next year and Von Braun will split time between civilian and military space projects.
Norman F. Schoonover announces Keith Norton will serve as Fund Chairman for Washington County Red Cross March 1959 campaign. Norton expresses pride in civic leadership and returning to community service.
Socialite yachtsman John Parkinson reports $100,900 in jewels stolen from his five floor Fifth Avenue apartment. Missing items include his wife’s $25,000 diamond necklace and a $17,000 pearl necklace, with no signs of forced entry between Monday and Wednesday noon.
Iowa State College will ask the Legislature for about 250000 to launch a six year plan expanding agriculture facilities. The plan calls for a new 400 acre agronomy farm five to eight miles from campus, an 80 acre agricultural engineering farm, and a new animal husbandry farm using existing land. Total cost is 875000 with 100000 already pledged by the Iowa Crops and Soils Research Association.
Actress Debbie Reynolds has filed suit for divorce from singer Eddie Fisher in Los Angeles. The couple separated after a September split following Fisher's three day date with Elizabeth Taylor. Reynolds's attorney announced negotiations toward a divorce settlement after their brief reconciliation attempt collapsed.
Congressman Fred Schwengel will visit Washington County on Wednesday with Keith Vetter coordinating appointments between 9 a.m. and noon at the county courthouse. He will meet with Farm Bureau officials at lunch and plans seven county stops this week finishing in Davenport on Friday.
Iowa Bar Association calls for a constitutional change to end party ticket elections for judges. Voters would decide only retention or dismissal, with replacement by appointment if a judge loses no confidence. Committee led by L L Corcoran of Sibley drafted the plan.
A car versus truck crash 15 miles south of Fort Dodge Iowa on US 169 killed Loren G Johnson 27 of Dayton Iowa and lightly injured Raymond Bondurant 46 and Milan Scarborough 72 of Martin Tennessee. Bondurant was transporting 207 feeder pigs from Tennessee to Humboldt Iowa.
The Malibu fire burned over 20 000 acres destroying 40 homes and forcing thousands to flee in the Santa Monica Mountains. Navy Army and Marine units assisted as 2 000 firefighters battled hot spots, with no timetable for full control and widespread property loss including Lew Ayres home.
Spencer Youth's champion steer sold for 23125 at a local sale. Riverside nun Sister Rufina Dautremont, teaching in Chicago, survived the Our Lady of the Angels fire with relatives confirming her illness kept her from teaching that day. An anonymous caller claimed two Roman Catholic parochial school fire victims Bernice Cichocki and Lucille Filipponio were alive and held for 25000 dollars. Police investigated a vacant lot after the hoax call while families identified the last unclaimed bodies at the county morgue.
Six Iowans and three other men pleaded innocent to charges they obtained $100000 across the Midwest via an advance fee sales scheme. Judge Graven denied motions for bill of particulars and change of venue. The case, indicted in Waterloo, may be tried in Mason City or Sioux City.
Des Moines Iowa UPI reports a trial over the sale and resale of a church to a minister for 100 dollars and re sale to the church board for 50 000 dollars. The Fellowship Tabernacle seeks to void the sale and invalidate the initial agreement. The Caswells contend they invested in the church and built on the property.
Washington's high school concert band presents its first concert of the season tonight at 8 in the high school gym. The program includes selections from two well known musicals, seasonal numbers, and other pieces. Admission is by season ticket or individual tickets at the door before showtime.
Weather from United Press International notes colder air moving into Iowa tonight with light snow starting in the southwest and spreading Friday. Lows range from 10 to 20 degrees in the north and 20 to 30 in the south, with highs Friday around 20 to 30. Saturday remains colder with partial cloudiness.
