Des Moines reports show Iowa still tallying two war deaths daily nearly 16 weeks after the war ended. Historians note 60 deaths in November lifting the state’s war toll to 7133, about double WWI. Most November deaths concern sailors once listed as missing in action.
Kenneth Rumball a 49 year old Cedar Rapids man was found in a park with a knife wound to his arm. He received a blood transfusion at a local hospital and was described in fair condition. He did not identify the assailant to police.
Des Moines reports 482 cases of undulant fever since June 1, the highest in state history. Last year had 295. Dr. Carl F Joroun notes upward trend partly from better reporting, with human cases arising from contact with animals or dairy products. Pasteurization seen as best safeguard against milk borne disease.
About 200 delegates from 21 universities urged a government diplomatic training school modeled on West Point and Annapolis. The proposal, to be sent to President Truman, was made at an intercollegiate Conference on Peace held at the State University of Iowa.
Four occupants of a car wedged by rear wheels in the MacArthur bridge guard fence escaped through a front door after initially rear ending a taxi. The vehicle fell 60 feet into the Mississippi as workers tried to recover it. driver Sherman Watson faces reckless driving charges.
Union Stockyards Chicago Karl Hoffman of Ida Grove Iowa won the grand champion carload of fat steers in the Market Fat Stock show. It marked the fourth consecutive year the 48 year old Towan has earned top honors in this class, competing with other entrants.
Maj. Gen. Sherman Miles testified that a November 27 1941 message from Gen. Marshall should have alerted Hawaii to possible attack before Pearl Harbor. Miles said Short’s reply claiming alert against sabotage was inadequate and failed to show proper readiness.
Tenheran dispatch reports Iran's foreign minister sent a note to Soviet Russia demanding withdrawal of Russian troops, asserting interference in Azerbaijan may be ending, and seeking permission to move Iranian troops into the rebel province.
Heavy rain on Saturday kept Santa from visiting Washington as Chamber of Commerce leaders postponed the appearance. Officials said the climate was unsuitable for children and rescheduled the event for within the next week or two. A free 10 30 show at the State theater drew about 400 youngsters who enjoyed short subjects and a western film.
Mr and Mrs I B Coffeey of West Chester spent yesterday in Iowa City with Mrs Lola Coffey. They called on Mrs Fraccis Halda and infant daughter Mary Diana at Mercy Hospital. Mrs Halda is the former Diana Coffey who taught music in the Ainsworth schools before her marriage.

Tokyo reports General MacArthur ordered Japan to arrest 69 more war crime suspects including a prince of imperial blood two former premiers and top militarists propagandists. Among those named are Field Marshall Prince Morimasa Mashimoto and former premiers Kiishiro Hiranuma and Hirota. Arrests also ordered for four publishers.
December opens wet with .85 inch rainfall for weekend Dec 1-2. Most fell Saturday afternoon, lighter Sunday. Temperatures ranged 36 to 41 degrees, with 30-degree low last night. November rainfall was 2.0 inches versus 6.18 last year. high 73, low 10. A year ago November had 78 and 15 with a trace of snow, while this year saw two inches in one storm.
Nearly 200 vehicles were licensed by eleven this morning with 183 cars and 31 trucks for next year, most licensed Saturday. The half day opening marked one of the county's best licensing days as the period runs through February first and officials hope owners move early to avoid delays.

The CIO United Auto Workers asked the U S government to investigate General Motors for potential anti monopoly violations. President R J Thomas cited GM statements on resuming limited output for critical parts to other carmakers as evidence of monopoly control in the industry. He urged immediate action under U S anti trust laws, amid union plans to permit limited GM production for items supplied to other auto manufacturers.
Carlos Walling is the new manager of Dutro's OK Tire Welding Shop. He replaces his brother Everette, who moved his family to Denver, Colorado. Mr. Walling has had considerable tire experience. Mrs. Walling is assisting her husband.
Influenza and severe colds hit Washington schools with 297 pupils absent. Superintendent M. M. Schell reported 39 percent of students away, with 25 percent at Lincoln, 26 percent at Stewart, 34 percent at junior high, and 32 percent at the high school. Five teachers also absent for illness or family reasons. substitutes filled in.
Bidding was light at the annual delinquent tax sale in the county treasurer's office. Seven properties were sold to individuals for $397.18, with four bidders. Washington County bid on 12 real estate parcels for the total tax.
The Washington county sheriff's office added a submachine gun to its arsenal. The weapon, intended for US Army use, arrived as surplus after the war and was acquired at a fraction of its 225 price. It can fire 50 rounds of 45 caliber at once with a 600 yard range. The department already houses sawed off shotguns, automatic rifles, and other arms.
Dale Teets arrived home from Camp Grant Illinois where he received his honorable discharge after overseas service. He is a son of Mrs Everett Y Teets.
The county will take for tax sale any properties advertised delinquent for three years with no bids. The sale is adjourned to January 28 to place the remaining properties on the auction block.
At Route 1 near No. 1 west of Brighton Willard Gray swerved off the surfaced road and ditched his car, minor injuries reported, $50 damage. Nearby Marion Longer Upset a cream truck near Walnut Creek Bridge, dumping 59 cans of cream, total loss, $300 damage. vehicle owned by Raymond Dielman of Kiddyville.
A campaign urges gifts for hospitalized soldiers at Schick Hospital in Clinton with a Dec 10 deadline. Fred Downing heads the Legion committee, noting weak Washington response. Gifts, new and appropriate for hospital use, may be bought locally and left at drug stores for shipment.
President Truman urged Congress to authorize a fact finding board to handle labor disputes and regretted that the labor management conference failed to resolve current strikes. He proposed a system of boards under emergency authority and urged workers to return to work in the General Motors dispute.
The Evening Journal in Washington city faces a delivery crisis as five of sixteen regular carrier salesmen are absent due to flu or injuries, with supervisor Eugene Wead also ill. Substitutes fill routes, but delays and missed papers are expected. Customers missing the paper by 6:30 p.m. should call the Journal office. Three carriers were out Saturday and plan to return the following Saturday, requesting customers to have two weeks’ money ready.
Report from Nuremberg states Hitler decided four months before Munich that Czechoslovakia must fall and prepared a May 1938 directive for an ultimate attack. It details propaganda incidents and a German claim that Czechs attacked first to justify invasion.
Mr and Mrs Gene Tucker of Lincoln Illinois announced the birth of a daughter named Marguerite. The baby weighed seven pounds two and three quarter ounces and was born at 12 45 this afternoon in a Lincoln hospital. The father phoned his parents Mr and Mrs Claud W Tucker to share the news.
