Davenport councilman Charles L Dollerhide organized a duck dinner for 30 officials and friends then announced his resignation to assume the new justice of the peace post elected on November 8.
Otto Renken, 35, a Holland farm hand, plans to go back to Germany next spring to claim $90,000 left by his mother. Regulations prohibit taking the money out of the country, so he must remain in the fatherland to receive the bequest after coming to America ten years ago.
District Judge C F Wennerstrom ordered the city to pay about $4 500 to seven city firemen who sued for back salary. The to be paid include Walter Johnson George Krafka John E Burke Bernard Harden Clarence A Oswalt Edwin Anderson and Harry Dueworth.
Iowa landowners and farmers will obtain small trees and seedlings from the state forest nursery next spring at nominal prices. The program operates under the Clarke McNary act in cooperation with the U S forest service. Trees are for reforestation erosion control or farm woodlots and not for landscaping.
Vincent Groninga, former Ackley high school football star and recent graduate, lost his left arm at the elbow in a farm accident while cleaning a corn shredder. He attempted to clear the machine before it stopped.
An unofficial survey shows Iowa residents receive just over 3 million dollars monthly from state and federal relief. It excludes counties without state aid and certain county costs. November relief rolls totaled 125,142 persons including state works progress and other programs.
DES MOINES C W Storms, state auditor, issued an annual audit of the state hospital for insane and inebriates at Clarinda. The report notes a $15,852.76 increase in operating costs for the fiscal year ended June 30 compared to the prior year.
Thanksgiving pheasant dinners were served at multiple Prairie Flower homes. Guests included Clarence Fulton Carl Jarrard and families with Mrs Wm McBeth Mrs Mary Beebe and Mr and Mrs Stanley McBeth plus family from Mr Pleasant. Also guests at J Rittenhouse home where Mr and Mrs J D Dayton and Clark Nelson were entertained there.
Washington county farmers receive 437 federal farm program checks totaling 77583.40 at the county soil conservation office. Chairman Wayne Norman says notices will be mailed to recipients and money collected when called for. Over 1,100 more checks expected, with arrival around the new year.
A 17-year-old girl Lois Adams of Apache Oklahoma won first prize of 400 dollars as champion girl cook at the International Livestock Exhibition in Chicago. William H. Curry of Tipton Indiana holds the ten ears of yellow dent corn that won him the crown of corn king.
Dr C A Owen of Monmouth College inspires Washington church men at the annual men and missions dinner in the Methodist church dining room with lessons on civilization and the perils missionaries faced in Assiut Egypt. The event drew 125 men and featured student musical performances prior to and after the address.
Mrs. Charles Brown died this morning at 10 30 in Washington County Hospital after illness since February. Funeral services set for Sunday 2 PM at the Methodist church with Rev. Arthur Atack. arrangements handled by L A Jones. Pearl Evelyn Ayers born July 24 1888 in Kansas City Kansas, daughter of Perry L Ayers and Julia Carr Ayers, married to Mr Brown November 24 1909. Survived by husband, father, two daughters Mildred Westermark and Hilda, a son Wayne C Brown, four stepchildren, and a brother and three sisters.
Fra Nelswanger has relocated to California where she plans to establish her residence and begin life in a new home.
Santa Claus will visit Washington tomorrow arranged by the Chamber of Commerce. Secretary O. B. Schmitt says the visit will be by automobile unless snow blocks travel. He arrives at 1:30 PM in Central Park for a candy treat for children.
Washington counties maternity nurses Pearl Olson and Aila Hiltunen completed a busy month in November visiting 80 new cases including expectant mothers and deliveries. They logged 286 visits, assisted in eleven births, and plan December work with home care education and motherhood classes in county and neighboring areas.
Sam Miller of Washington sues Max Waterhouse of Clay seeking 10000 in damages from a Dec 22 1937 auto collision on primary road No 1 two miles SW of Brighton alleged due to Waterhouse negligence. Attorney Edmund Morrison Jr filed the petition. case details include listed negligence items and injuries.
Salt Lake City reports 23 dead in a grade crossing collision between a Denver and Rio Grande Western train and a Jordan High School bus. Officials seek responsibility as recovery continues and 17 students injured, three critically, in the disaster dubbed the Flying Ute.
Raymond Anderson, longtime bookkeeper for Washington Lumber, will begin work Monday at the National Bank of Washington, replacing Lester Mack who moved to Prudential Life Insurance. Gerald Carris of Keota is named Anderson’s successor at the lumber office and starts Monday. Carris and his wife, Beverly Baker Carris, will live in Alice Rownds’ apartment at 460 West Second Street.

Istanbul dispatch reports 72 dead as Durfa river floods southeastern Anatolia. Many missing and thousands left homeless as waters swept through the region.
Sheriff H. M. Putnam received a state bureau of investigation report on Tom Collins, jailed for 30 days for intoxication and 60 days for drunk driving. The record shows arrests from 1924 in Chicago for intoxication to 1925 larceny, a 1927 Toledo motor vehicle offence, later Des Moines and Marshalltown charges, and a Fort Madison prison term with release in 1936.
The case will go to the jury late this afternoon after both sides complete their legal arguments.
William Donahue McConnell, a former Wellman resident born June 14, 1861 in Keosauqua, died at 2:30 PM yesterday at his daughter’s home in West Liberty from heart and kidney illness. Survived by his wife and five daughters including Hattie McConnell of Washington and Mrs. Jesse Ryan of West Liberty. funeral set for 2 PM Saturday at Wellman Methodist Church. Rev. Paul Hann to officiate. burial in Wellman Cemetery.
Des Moines reports Bob Feller, Cleveland pitcher, had his driving license suspended for 90 days by the state motor vehicle department. He was fined 100 dollars for allegedly driving 97 miles per hour in a 45 mile zone.
Des Moines authorities launched an extensive hunt for Benny Dickson the top outlaw after multiple sightings across Iowa. Reports say a blond woman believed to be his wife aided him in a $15 000 Brookings South Dakota bank robbery and that the couple traveled in a Kansas plated coupe toward Keokuk with possible sightings near Corydon and Burlington.
In Chillicothe Ohio 29 year old Robert Bready was detained for questioning in the death of his father Dr Russell H Bready 62 pastor of the Bainbridge Methodist church found shot in the temple near the parsonage Sheriff Joseph Vincent reported Robert slept at the parsonage with a revolver under his pillow and appeared intoxicated claiming memory loss from last night Robert had returned from a trip he said covered service in the Spanish civil war
Albert Kessel and Robert Lee Cannon were executed in the lethal gas chamber at San Quentin for knifing Warden Clarence Larkin and guard Homer Martin during a failed prison break. The two men, aged 29 and 38, were the first of five condemned in the Folson prison incident.
