Mary Brown an 18 year old schoolgirl is kidnapped by two men from a crack in Prince Georges County Maryland as 1900 residents search the countryside for her and her captors. Her sister Lucy 15 escaped kidnapping. The father pleads to authorities and locals to find the girl before police do.
Humboldt B. F. Dutton and Robert Parquette two surveyors with the state highway commission were rescued after their boat capsized in the icy West Des Moines river. Philip Lane assistant surveyor threw a rope and pulled them to shore, leaving them shaken but safe.
Mrs Cyrus Jorda of Mt Pleasant, about 40, is in critical condition after falling ill with tularemia five days after preparing a rabbit for cooking. Her son, who cleaned the rabbit, did not contract the disease.
Harlan J D Carmichael a 6r farmer died when his tractor moved forward while he was cranking it. The machine pushed him toward a building at his farm in a fatal incident.
Cleveland Indians star young pitcher Von Meter Feller was fined 100 by Municipal Judge Charles S. Cooter after a guilty plea to reckless driving. He paid the maximum fine and the judge recommended a 90 day suspension of his driver's license.
Dr. Vic Hasck, Cedar Rapids city health physician, says typhoid carriers from the recent outbreak have been traced and are under supervision. Thirty eight persons are being treated, with most cases described as mild.
Des Moines Iowa Republicans to inherit a general fund balance of about six million dollars in the state treasury. The incoming state administration plans to manage the balance to support the general fund.
Atlantic-J. P. Street, longtime superintendent of Atlantic schools, resigns after 14 years to become assistant state superintendent of public instruction. Street was appointed by Jessie M. Parker, the newly elected state superintendent from Lake Mills.
Rove Hill-Eliott Brown of Rove Hill, holder of the record price for a grand champion steer at the International Live stock exposition, topped the first sale of the thirty-ninth exposition. His 950 pound Aberdeen-Angus steer Lucky Strike sold for 8.25 a pound, earning 7,837 dollars, enabling him to buy more animals and start a career as a professional Angus breeder.
Des Moines officials disclose that Dea iMoines Hazel Shea, formerly chief clerk in the Secretary of State's office, received a brief promotion to deputy secretary and a salary rise from 2250 to 13300 per year effective November 1. Davenport's James O'Donnell, a clerk, was raised to chief clerk with pay from 1800 to 2250 per year. Both employees were told they will not be retained after January 1 under the incoming administration.
Prospects for a heavy trapping season look bright in Des Moines as sales of trapping licenses and fur buyer permits rise. Officials printed additional blanks to accommodate growing demand and note unusual quality fur in the reports.
Mrs Margar et Embree aged 79 died at her farm north of Keota after ten weeks illness. Paralytic stroke caused death. funeral set for Friday at 2 PM at Keota Methodist church. She was born April 2 1859 in Dayton near Wellman and married James A Embree in 1874. Survived by five of six children and a sister.
The county offers two corn loan types, one from the federal government and one from the state agriculture department under the Washington County Warehouse board. An affidavit of expenses filed by John R B Quinn Democratic candidate for supervisor shows a $37.55 campaign spend mostly on newspaper advertising and gasoline. Candidates must file affidavits by December 8, thirty days after the election.
Des Moines reports limited reservations open for the Republican Jubilee dinner at Hotel Savery on December 9. State Chairman J H Milroy will preside as Governor elect George A Wilson and other elected officers are to be introduced. Reservations are first come, first served at State Republican Headquarters.
Mason City W Earl Hall president of the Iowa Safety Council blasts Earl Miller secretary of state elect, saying no place for him in the council and that its aim is highway safety only. Des Moines Miller defends patrol appointments as nonpolitical and vows to keep patrols apolitical. Chief Hattery denies any plan to serve under Miller.
Evidence was heard today in the case of Irwin and Buel Hasty against Carl Emde administrator of Maria Emde s estate. A jury was impaneled yesterday and today's proceedings occurred before Judge J G Patterson with attorneys A E Baldrige for plaintiffs and L J Kehoe and George F Morrison for the administrator.
Donald Benell of a Kalona area farm was injured when an elevator collapsed while loading corn. He suffered a fractured nose and head injuries, was taken to Mercy hospital in Town City for x rays, and will be reexamined tomorrow. He is married to Ruth Messer of Washington.
The Washington Hi Y club met at the YMCA with eighty boys present to plan hosting 150 visiting Hi Y members for a dinner and overnight. Committees were named for homes guides ushers entertainment and badges as they prepare for the eastern Iowa Hi Y assembly on Friday December 5th. The group seeks homes for the guests and urges any willing families to offer lodging.
Weather observer reports November rainfall in Washington totaled 3.66 inches, all during the first seven days of the month. Temperature over the last 24 hours ranged from a low of 25 to a high of 45 degrees.
Fred Werner of Washington will hold the No 1 county auto plate for 1939 after arriving early at the treasurer’s office. The first sales opened at 8 am with few patrons. 47 plates had been sold by 10 am as more drivers planned to assign special numbers before February 1 deadline.
Dr. M. J. Cruise, president of the Washington County University of Iown Alumni association, names a committee to organize the annual banquet. Members include Mary Jorie Pratt chairing with R. J. Schliefelman Charles Barclay John Owen and Alethea May. A January date is anticipated. Officers are Cruise Ware and LeRoy Pratt.
Iowa state parks are prepared for winter picnic parties with planning urged. Applications and fees due by December 15. about 200 reservations already made. Treasurer reports 5,400 automobile numbers and 700 truck numbers received to meet county needs, with more available if required.
Iowa counties will receive ready to use grasshopper bait from regional mixing stations to be set up at Des Moines Sioux City and Council Bluffs. M D Tate says the plan improves efficiency reduces costs and avoids long term bait storage. The fall egg survey confirms a heavy western infestation potential for 1939.
A Denver and Rio Grande Western freight train struck a school bus near Midvale Utah killing at least 25 high school pupils and injuring many others as a heavy snowstorm limited visibility. Police said 26 bodies were removed from the wreckage and the bus driver Farrell Silcox was among the dead.
Tom McElhinney son of Mrs J. B. McElhinney of Iowa City has won an interne appointment at the General Hospital in Cincinnati Ohio. He will finish his medical course at the State University of Iowa next June and begin duties in Cincinnati July 1. Cincinnati is named as one of six top prize hospitals in the United States for interne positions. The honor comes from his outstanding work at Iowa and instructor recommendations.
Mr and Mrs George Hell returned last night from Mare Issa Jll where they attended the funeral of Chris Reichard husband of Mrs Hell s sister They spent several days in Mare Issa and St Louis Mo with relatives and friends.
