A Corydon column reports workmen building a new house two miles south of Corydon in Iowa spent three days last week chasing away three skunks. They repeatedly returned from beneath an old dwelling on the torn down site until finally departing Saturday, allowing peaceful progress.
Ames mural artist Lowell Houser of Ames won a 1300 dollar contract for the Ames postoffice mural in a contest sponsored by the painting and sculpture section of the treasury department's public works branch.
A crowd of thousands, mainly children, watched in fear as an amphibian plane carrying Santa Claus landed on the Mississippi River near Burlington and rolled over. None of the occupants were hurt.
Miss Margaret Coleson of Des Moines daughter of Mrs Maude Coleson sang on the Major Bowes amateur hour on November 24 in New York ranking third in the voting. She is Miss Iowa No 2 and is noted in a theater owners contest from last winter.
DES MOINES death ended an 33 day coma for Donald Wright an 8 year old boy from Woodward who was knocked from his bicycle by a car on October 29 and never regained consciousness.
Rev. W. C. Williams of Newton, editor of the Jasper County Mirror, was named pastor of Wittenberg Congregational Church north of Newton. The church, oldest rural church in the area, had no regular pastor for a year. Williams will continue his newspaper work.
Des Moines Governor Herring issued a firm denial to reports he is about to announce a U S Senate candidacy. He stated he has no plans to seek higher office at this time and urged reporters to stop speculating.
Two CCC members were hospitalized and jailed after a theft of a pool car at Loveland led to a crash on a rural curve. Sheriff Perry said charges of car theft will be pursued once transfer of one youth from hospital is completed.
The body of Dr. D. P. Phillips, a professor at Iowa State Teachers College, was found Sunday evening in woods near Janesville. He had hanged himself but the rope broke, leaving him on the ground. the body was already frozen. The discovery was made by Dr. Winfield Scott and farmer A. Lewis.
Marie Comstock, manager of a Granger residence project under the resettlement administration, says she will act as a middleman between Washington and residents. The sister of former Michigan governor Comstock, she notes she has no intent to dictate wine making, beets, or turnips in basements.
London dispatch reports a cabinet meeting urged an oil embargo on Italy. Foreign Secretary Hoare and Lord Eden argued sanctions could force Mussolini toward concessions, with debate on delaying embargo if hostilities pause in Ethiopia and talks resume. Britain and France reportedly favor unified sanctions at the League of Nations meeting on December 2.
Every employable member of a relief family must be registered at the national re employment office in the basement of the post office, or no one in the family will be certified for work. If one member has been certified, this certification will be cancelled unless every employable member is registered.
Washington County conducted the annual delinquent tax sale at the county auditor’s office. The county bid in 221 pieces of property advertised for three years, with one year to redeem. Eight bidders won on 16 other pieces, some bidders taking multiple parcels. properties lie in Brighton, Washington, Riverside, and Wellman. The sale adjourned to January 27 for remaining delinquent properties.
The contest to award five cash prizes for the best outside decorated homes in Washington is drawing interest. Entry deadline is December 16. Residents may enter by submitting to Clarence Logan at Klein's, the Journal office, or the YMCA.
Des Moines forecast shows a gradual warmup with above freezing in most areas tomorrow. Federal meteorologist Charles D. Reed notes tonight will dip to around 20 degrees above zero after last night’s subzero readings, while December’s sun is expected to help lift daytime temperatures.
Funeral services for James F. Burham were conducted at L. A. Jones funeral home with Rev. D. Chalmers Fulton officiating. Interment followed at Elm Grove cemetery with firing squad and taps. Burham, a Spanish American War veteran, was honored by six comrades as pallbearers. Music featured Carolyn Hamilton and Mrs. Hugh McCleery.
James F. Burnham born Fairfield Iowa September 10 1872 died November 20 1985 at his Chicago home aged 113. He married Effie Knauss September 15 1897 and had seven daughters Marguerite Pauline Beetle Winona and others. survived by wife and daughters plus niece Marie Gustafson nee Knauss. A Spanish American War veteran, he spent years in Washington and Chicago and was affectionately known as Dad.
Mr and Mrs Cyrus A Gaffey and their son spent Thanksgiving with relatives in the city, sharing a warm holiday gathering and family photos.
Funeral services for John Isaiah Kuhn will be conducted at the Christian church at two o clock Tuesday afternoon by Rev. Vernon H Carter. Burial will follow at Elm Grove cemetery. He died Saturday afternoon after a week of illness from heart trouble. He was born September 20 1858 in Wooster Ohio and lived in Verdi Havre and Washington before moving to the Eureka area then Washington. He leaves two daughters Hattie Wagner and Lee Dusenbery, seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren, one brother Edd Kuhn of Harlingen Texas and two sisters in Ohio. His wife died in 1920. He was a member of the Christian church.
H R Jacobs pleaded guilty in district court before Judge J G Patterson to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He was sentenced to three months in the county jail but suspended and paroled to Sheriff Harold M Putnam. The judge completed most of the November term and may return for a day to finish business before January term.
The Methodist church Ladies Aid announces the annual Christmas bazaar on Wednesday. The food booth opens at 10 am while other booths start at 1 pm featuring candy aprons rugs and home goods. A Friendly Tea Table serves tea and cake free, and a cafeteria dinner is served 6 to 7 pm.
Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Miller returned to Moline Sunday afternoon.
Secretary Clarence Logan of the Chamber of Commerce asks Wednesday cooperation to keep the Santa Claus parade a Christmas feature for all to enjoy. He requests spectators not crowd in and says several special police will assist crowd control. A detailed schedule will be released tomorrow.
Washington readies for Santa Claus day on Wednesday December 4 with a free all day program and a grand pageant parade starting 10 30 AM. Tens of thousands expected as crowds fill sidewalks and windows. Santa will greet visitors at a downtown cabin while Mayor Lyte delivers the welcome and the PA system carries Santa’s voice.
The Chamber of Commerce offers five cash prizes totaling 20 dollars for outdoor decorated homes in Washington. Entries accepted now through December 16 with Clarence Logan and locations at Klein Klothing Co. and the Journal office or the Y M C A. Prizes range 7.50 to 2.00 dollars and winners announced December 23 when checks are mailed.
Raymond Rich and Chalupa secured the first four license plates at the county treasurer’s office as 1936 registrations opened. Rich claimed Nos 1 2 and 8 for his family cars including a Ford V-8, while Chalupa got No 4. Only 16 licenses were issued initially.
Y's Men will furnish the Christmas tree for the children’s party and the YWCA requests toy donations at city hall this week. Women’s organizations are asked to contribute a penny per member in cash for the treat.
Nine oclock draw for new year licenses saw John Dodd claim No 13, with others awaiting reassignments. Clarence Phillips received first truck license. Miss Bess Jones reported 66 license number requests and two truck requests, to be granted upon payment. Owners have two months to buy new numbers before delinquency penalties begin February first.
United Press correspondent Lyle C. Wilson reports Hoover, after dinner and two hours in his study, is not a candidate for re nomination. Hoover aims to lay out political issues to defeat Roosevelt and may welcome a national debate, though he has not stated his stance on running.
Washington D C December 1936 Secretary Wallace announced a new agricultural adjustment program to raise hog production by about 30 percent next year while restricting crop acreage to around 95 million acres. The plan fixes corn and hog bases after county approvals and requires farmers to plant at least 25 percent of their holdings in corn with payments staged in two installments plus head payments for hogs.
In the basement of the McLellan store a new shipment of Capriste mas toys caused a lively scene as Manager Fred Stow Don Welsh and Ernest Marshall oversaw the unpacking. Humming tops filled the space, drawing curious parents eager to shop early for singing tops.
