Parker M. Lichty of Dysart said a meteor almost hit his automobile about 12 miles south of Waterloo while he drove home. He believed the shooting star struck within 200 feet of his car and recalled thinking the sky was on fire as it seemed to head straight for him.
In Ottumwa a shotgun shell accidentally placed in a burning trash pile exploded near Charles Craft, nine years old, nearly blinding him as seven buckshot pellets penetrated his face. The incident highlights dangers of improvised fires and ammunition around children.
Attorneys for former Perry schools superintendent Walter G. Clark filed a bill of 9300 dollars plus 6 percent interest from May 13, 1934. The board accepted the bill and studied it. The 9000 dollars covers three years salary at 3000 annually and 300 dollars reportedly due on the first year’s contract after Clark was discharged. Miss Agnes Samuelson, state superintendent, ruled the Perry board erred in discharging Clark.
Two men robbed Mr and Mrs Fred Leiser as they left their residence in DuBuque taking 40 dollars and diamonds worth 4500 dollars. Mrs Leiser fainted to save a valuable diamond ring. The suspects fled in a car with Montgomery County Meense plates.
Burlington veteran Jack McQuiston is stranded at Gravity station when the engineer pulls away without him. He wires the crew to hold at Ladoga and hires a car to chase the train to ensure the schedule is kept.
In Des Moines Mercy hospital two prematurely born twins, a boy John Charles and girl Nancy Aon, weighed 2 14 and 2 13 respectively at birth. After 24 hours both maintained birth weight and doctors, though cautious, noted improved survival chances. Milk fed by eyedroppers and oxygen support continued.
The Burlington Masons with the Iowa Masonic Service committee present a flag ceremony at the Burlington high school auditorium. Twenty five flags representing foreign Masonic jurisdictions will be presented by Rainbow Girls. The event is open to Masons, wives, families and friends on Wednesday.
Davenport reports a new horse theft wave in the Midwest with police close to catching two men in the act as they fled in a car. Authorities note horses are now targeted for easier sale than hogs and cattle.
Four members of the Irish O Malley gang of St Louis aided by an accomplice escape from Muskogee Oklahoma city jail where they awaited sentence for a double bank robbery. Chief Bolton was shot in the face during the breakout as officers pursued the fugitives. They commandeered a minister’s car and fled northward with one gangster shot in the back.
The county Farm Bureau will hold its annual convention Saturday December 14 in the social hall of the Methodist church. A speaker from the state Farm Bureau federation in Des Moines will discuss a proposed new state organization for 1937. The program includes county chorus singing and practice sessions led by local volunteers with Mrs KE Morrison Jr and Mrs Homer Birney coordinating dinner arrangements.
Bill Rehmann of Burlington supervisor of stores for Benteco assisted yesterday in arranging decorations at the store. Red and green canopies were to be placed over the shelves with icicles strung between.
The funeral for Frank J. Dolies will be held Wednesday at 3 p m at L A Jones Funeral Home with Rev B F Schwartz officiating. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Dolies died Thursday morning after a long illness from a stroke in 1933. He lived in Washington 50 years and ran a carriage factory at 22 North Iowa Avenue. Born December 24 1861 in Iowa City he worked in Cedar Rapids and Riverside before moving to Washington in 1886. He married Annie Selement in 1898 and had two sons Fred W and Charles H and a daughter Mrs Don Wilkins. Surviving also a brother Tom of Iowa City.
Miss Kay Bostwick of Chicago spent the weekend visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Bostwick. The brief notes her family gathering and travels.
Des Moines December 8 WPA administrator L B Hill defended the program stating that all certified Iowa workers will receive jobs. He released county by county WPA employment data showing 24 792 of 50 55 employables certified as eligible are currently employed with Washington County listing 89 certified as having jobs.
The Chamber of Commerce sponsors an outside decoration contest with December 16 entry deadline. Washington aims to be a beautifully decorated city with residence streets reflecting the business district. Five cash prizes are offered and winners will be announced December 23 in the Journal with checks mailed. Entries may be made by residents and submitted to Clarence Logan Klein Klothing Co or the Journal office or the Y M C A.
Des Moines reports excess moisture will shrink corn yield by about 2.5 bushels per acre. A moisture survey shows 21.87 percent moisture, the highest on record, reducing the expected output from 27 to around 24.7 bushels per acre and risking No. 2 grade.
Ww. F. Bickel spoke at the Faculty Men's dinner on how schools aid highway safety. The Washington men teachers meet on the first Monday each month with Ralph LeMoine as president. Dinner was served at the Y by Mrs John Dodd.
Tomorrow Washington hosts a grand Santa Claus parade at 10 30 with a caravan of ponies Eskimo dogs and Mother Goose figures along the square route. Afterward Santa will greet children in a Central park cabin as chimes play carols while police oversee crowd safety and schools adjust schedules.
An elderly man Frank Welte about 70 was badly injured in an accidental fall in his barnyard in Richmond. He carried a satchel full of coal when he fell around 8 30 this morning and he was taken to Washington county hospital with possible lip fracture.
The annual 4-H club health contest concluded without a clear winner. Judges awarded blue ribbons to four boys and three girls, recognizing outstanding health among participants from Chicago area clubs.
J. V. Carlton, from Iowa City, starts as salesman and servicer of May tags for Scott Furniture Co. He has prior May tag sales in Alexandria South Dakota near Mitchell in 1920 1928 and 1929. He worked as a mail messenger in Iowa City for years and plans to relocate with his four children in the future.
William L. Eichelberger, 67, died suddenly at 2:20 a.m. at his home 514 North Long Avenue from a stroke. Born May 31, 1868 in the Eureka area, he lived in Washington most of his life except seven years in California. Surviving are his widow Clara. daughter Mrs. Beulah Demynek of Okee Wisconsin. father D. J. Eichelberger. sister Mrs. Bessie Fore of West Los Angeles. Funeral plans are pending pending arrival of his daughter. He had previously run a grocery business and a music store and was a Royal Neighbor member and former Woodman.
Harlow Heinz, 29, a relief worker, was sentenced to hang at Fort Madison on January 5, 1987 for the murder of his six year old nephew, David Fox. Judge D E B Maguire overruled a motion for a new trial after Heinz confessed to the slaying.
Dr. T. H. McMichael president of Monmouth College gave an eloquent address at the United Presbyterian fathers and sons dinner in the church dining room. He argued boys have a right to good birth home life and discipline while fathers deserve obedience respect and pride. About 100 men and boys attended as a fine turkey dinner was served by church women and girls. Roger Sherman presided and Dave Fulton led singing.
Patch Blue Ribbon owned by Cleo Yoder of Wellman Iowa was crowned grand champion steer at the International Livestock Show. The Aberdeen Angus born August 16 1934 on the Yoder farm near Wellman earned the top prize in Chicago.
Four jurors examined ledger entries admitted to the district court record in the gambling conspiracy case against Attorney General Ed WL O'Connor. State witnesses said the ledger was seized in a raid and now forms part of the evidentiary record.
The sentence notes a district court jury conviction with a recommendation of the death penalty. The report indicates final sentencing followed the jury's recommendation.

Signs at street entrances warn of prohibitions with fines up to $100 or 30 days imprisonment for violations. A barber shop regulation bill failed 4 to 2.
Miss Ida Gordon of the Three Quarter Century Club recalls a life milestone a trip to India visiting missionary relatives Rev and Mrs Lytle. She toured the pyramids and the Nile aboard the Ibis and paused at Naples Pompeii Rome Paris and London. She credits her long life to time not yet coming.
