Mrs J H Savage of Humboldt notes the Kentia palm purchased in Chicago 42 years ago has grown from 11 inches to nearly nine feet tall. The rapid growth presents a problem for its care and space in the parlor.
Evacuation of the new water softening and foam remover plant will start Monday. It will adjoin the waterworks. About $30 000 will be spent on the plant. Construction will be completed in six months.
The Stark Building Co. of Cedar Rapids lands the contract to build Humboldt's sewage disposal plant for 32373 dollars, with work to start soon.
Don Messinger, 24, Lake City, is set for trial on December 7 on a check forgery charge. He is free on a $1000 bond after allegedly writing an $86.23 check on Union State Bank of Rockwell City and giving it to Moses Habhab, a Fort Dodge tire merchant.
Federal Judge Charles A. Dewey ruled that $16 000 worth of whisky labeled Prescription is mis branded and ordered the Iowa Liquor Control Commission to relabel each bottle with a different name The court noted the word prescription led the public to believe the whisky was the same as that prescribed by a physician
Burglars gained access by sliding down a chute to the basement of the O. P. Skaggs grocery, taking about $590 mostly in checks after a $500 down payment was mentioned.
Creston resident Mrs. J. W. Sturgeon celebrated her sixty fifth birthday on Thursday along with the thirty fourth anniversary of her marriage and Thanksgiving day observance.
Postmaster Lucian C. Tilden announced that an Ames post office employee will move into its new quarters on January 1. The facility, nearing completion, costs $161,000 and represents a rapid upgrade for the service.
John Schroeder, about 68, a farm hand, was found frozen to death near his Watkins home after dark. He apparently stepped outside barefoot, became entangled in a wire fence, one leg caught, marking the winter’s first Iowa death.
Will Howell ends his year old tenure as statistician in the relief office as the post is discontinued under new administration. The work will shift to the county welfare worker as FERA ends in the state. Howell has served since August of last year.

County Engineer W P Rawn as superintendent, Les Small as foreman, and RE Murphys as engineer in charge will coordinate rock extraction for stock piles and potential crushing to supply county road maintenance.
A. L. Taylor secretary of Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce will speak at the Washington Chamber of Commerce December meeting next Thursday evening on Salesmanship. Clerks and salespeople are invited to hear him. The program is arranged by Charles W. Davis. Three directors will be elected at this important year meeting.
Funeral services for Merle Bailey were conducted yesterday afternoon at L. A. Jones Funeral Home by Dr. F. W. Eastwood. Pallbearers included Oscar Jugenheimer Ralph Zeck Floyd Murdock M. Lee Roy Stewart and Art Rueb sam, all members of the Odd Fellows lodge. Burial followed at Elm Grove Cemetery.
The funeral of John C. Taylor was held at Sherman’s funeral home and he was buried in Wayland cemetery. Dr. B. F. Schwartz of the Methodist church led the service. Pallbearers were William Beggs Charles Owen L. E. Nagley William Plum W. G. McCrosky and George Breitenbach.
About 1,500 people attended the county poultry show and state bantam display at city hall as it closed. Exhibits doubled from last year with high quality birds. Bantams from Colorado and Washington drew interest. Delbert Bailey's grand champion led a strong finish.
The Literary Digest reports a second tabulation of its nationwide straw poll showing 91 351 votes in favor of Roosevelt acts and policies to 115 736 against. The vote shifts from 63.28 to 65.89 percent opposed. Illinois yields over 2 to 1 against the New Deal while Georgia and Texas show strong support. Minnesota and Ohio report a majority against the policy.
Governor Clyde L. Herring plans to announce his bid for the United States Senate in the 1938 Democratic primaries. The move would end his term as Iowa governor after a decisive 1934 win. The report links Kraschel and other Democrats as potential rivals and notes no member has confirmed plans.
Sioux City reports Cyde Mayer, former slot machine operator, testified that operators could reduce payouts by tampering with machines. He described payout as 70 percent on honest machines and that manufacturers know the true percentage. John Gibeau and Joe Young testified on related raid exhibits and statements.
Ida Chown born August 22 1879 in Oakland township taught in local schools and at Columbus City. married February 9 1920 to Homer Van Saint. She died from an injury related blood poisoning at age 51 with surviving husband mother and five sisters. Funeral Sunday at 2 o clock in United Presbyterian church Columbus City.

Iowa state officials report that liquor profits of about 800000 plus a 725000 treasury carryover will bridge a 1500000 gap in the 1936 budget for the first half of the year. December sales are projected between 1.26 and 1.5 million with $300000 profit likely, but higher bills may require carrying over some payables into 1986.
Funeral services for WH R Harvey were held yesterday afternoon at Sherman’s funeral home. The service was conducted by Rev D Chalmers Fulton of the United Presbyterian church, followed by burial in Elm Grove cemetery. The casket bearers were listed.

A Christian church in Washington plans a public auction this Sunday featuring a 14 year old boy instead of household items. The event, led by auctioneer A MecNarlen of Keota, is believed to be a historic first in the city. The public is invited to attend.
Don Stutsman returns home from the University of Illinois for Thanksgiving vacation. An all-Little Six end from Washington high school, he transferred from the University of Iowa this fall and was ineligible for football. He performed well in freshman football and plans to try out for varsity end next fall, plus basketball and baseball to stay in shape for football.
