The Iowa board of education urged the U.S. Department of Agriculture to place one Bankhead Jones research laboratory at Iowa State College in Ames. A member noted Iowa communities are pushing for sites elsewhere, but the board strongly favors Ames.
Waterloo resident Alvin Larsen waited 60 hours to secure the No 1 license plate for Herbert Nelson. He arrived at 6 a m with food and claimed an armchair in the county treasurer’s lobby in Cedar Falls.
Mrs Berg wife of the Newton schools superintendent and a visiting friend narrowly escaped asphyxiation from fumes in a basement burner. Mr Berg returned home at the moment the danger intensified as the two women suffered the effects of the gas.
The Iowa Law Review of the University of Iowa sponsors a Saturday convention in Iowa City with law school representatives from Louisiana State University Cincinnati University Minnesota Northwestern Wisconsin Washington St Louis Indiana Notre Dame Missouri Nebraska Illinois Kentucky Tennessee and Detroit College participating in roundtable discussions.
Newton residents voted 1356 to 1050 against a 435000 school project that would buy 11 acres south of the square and build a new senior high school with an athletic field. Officials had sought a 196000 public works grant for the plan.
Des Moines Des Moines Louis VY Phelps business manager of Grinnell college was elected president of the Iowa College Business Office association. He succeeds A Neal Deaver of Graceland college as president. Fred L Turby of Drake university became secretary treasurer. The Waterloo Dairy Cattle Congress reported income of 124664 and expenditures of 98327 leaving a net 26336 for 1938. Hotel secretary Ed 5 announced the figures noting premiums rose 2000 over 1937 and total assets increased from 300874 to 405108.
Iowa Atty. Gen. Mitchell says boards of supervisors may require WPA relief recipients to work on streets and county roads at local prevailing wage rates. Payments cannot exceed $2 weekly excluding medical care, per Iowa statutes. Opinion prepared for Auditor Storms by Atty. Gen. staff.

Fire in a wing of the men’s building at the state hospital for the insane in Stockton prompted rapid mobilization by authorities and an emergency Legion corps. About 50 violent inmates slipped the cordon. eight remained at large after the blaze, attributed to a pyromaniac patient.
Chairman Wayne Norman of the county soil conservation organization announced that sealing of corn cribs for government loans will not start on December 1 as planned. Funds for the loans are delayed two weeks, delaying the sealing program. 45 to 50 applications have already been filed, with more expected.
Registrations are being received for the eastern Iown Hi Y assembly December 9 and 10 in Washington. Boys are coming from Sioux City for the sessions at the Methodist church and lodging Friday night is sought. About 150 to 200 boys are expected. The trial of William Crandall for assault with intent to commit great bodily harm against Cecil Replogle was postponed after two or three state witnesses fell ill. County Attorney Richard A. Stewart said the case will be rescheduled for some time next week.

The Y's Men’s club Good Fellows program will again fund Christmas baskets for needy Washington families. A chairman will be announced soon, and the annual pony will run daily until Christmas. Basket numbers depend on funds. seventy five baskets if funds permit, or thirty to forty if smaller. Families in greatest need receive priority if funds are short.
Dr. Russell Cooper head of Cornell's history department addressed a large Y's Men and guests at the Y.M.C.A. on Americas Place in World Affairs. Filling in for Cornell president Dr. Herbert Bugstahle, Cooper offered a provocative Europe and US relations analysis and fielded questions. The talk opened a winter spring speaker series with a December walk on Utilities the Whipping Boy of American Industry.
Des Moines records a $150 553 76 month over month gain in gasoline and inheritance tax collections. Gasoline taxes lead the increase with $95 062 43 more than November 1937, while inheritance taxes rise by $55 491 33 for the month. Comptroller C B.
Paris reports show Premier Daladier secured a crushing victory as the general strike called by the French Confederation of Labor collapsed. Only 23 percent of Paris workers struck. transit and factories resumed, police arrested agitators, and violence flared in Toulouse and Lyons as markets reacted to the strike’s near end.
County doctors met for a regular monthly session at the nurses home after a 6:30 dinner in the hospital dining room. Dr. R Nomland from the State University of Iowa medical school led a skin disease clinic with several cases provided by local doctors.
