Storing Fruits and Vegetables This Winter

County extension director Jim Frier and horticulturist Ben F. Vance advise cleaning basement and cellar storage to reduce storage diseases. Lower temp by opening windows at night, close during day, store potatoes carrots apples and pears near near freezing, use plastic bags to reduce moisture loss, shelf pumpkins squash sweet potatoes away from heat, space them apart. Geranium cuttings should be rooted in sand or vermiculite, given light, and potted after roots form. Prevent weeds by removing seed sources now to curb next year’s growth.
