Best season to feed for successful lawn renovation

Ex tension Director Jim Frier advises starting a new lawn in Washington County now through Labor Day, with 80 to 90 percent success, vs spring seedings at 60 to 70 percent failure. Iowa State Extension Horticulturist Ed Cott notes fall seeding yields two growing seasons before heat, with bluegrass germinating best in fall and less weed competition. Recommendations include soil-prep fertilization, 2 to 3 pounds of seed per 1000 square feet, rolling or watering to firm soil, thorough first two weeks of frequent watering, mowing early at 3 inches to 1.5 inches, and using sod on slopes to prevent erosion. Avoid seeding after Labor Day and consider fall soil prep for winter germination if needed.
