Professor A Craig Baird of the University of Iowa announced new discussion events for the Iowa High School Forensic League in 194%. Other contests include extempore speaking original oratory interpretive reading and radio speaking.
Albert Schafer of Creston 31 pleaded guilty to forging a 3.25 dollar check. District Judge H. H. Carter sentenced him to 10 years at Fort Madison prison and parole was granted to Union County Sheriff J. R. Ewing with a ban on liquor.
Mrs. Hanford MacNider spent 106 days at the courthouse for Judge Graven's ruling and knitted 17 sweaters and a large white shawl during the hearing.
Mason City jurists awarded about $100,000 as District Judge Henry N. Graven ruled in a long estate case seeking nearly 5 million dollars from the estate of the late Charles H. McNider. The suit, described as the largest in an Iowa estate matter, had run eight years with hearings starting last January.
Genevieve Sutton a former Harlan girl and United Air Lines stewardess is approaching one million miles flown on Uniteds Chicago Denver Cheyenne division. She is the divisions top service stewardess and a Jennie Edmundson hospital trained nurse from Council Bluffs.
Mary Lahr of Storm Lake wins a first year law scholarship at the University of Iowa, joining Vic Pomerantz of Des Moines and Philip Bergveld of Algona as scholarship recipients announced by Dean Mason Ladd.
Principal George Fields reports advance enrollment at The High School of 441 for the year starting next Tuesday with about six more possible. Senior 108, junior 105, sophomore 107, freshman 121. country districts 38, junior high 78, St James 4. Five sophomores five juniors and three seniors attended other high schools last year. At Junior High Miss Ethel McCreedy notes 154 advance registrations with 76 seventh graders and 75 eighth graders. enrollment expected around 174 and slightly higher than last year. She urges remaining students to register by Friday or Monday forenoon.
Mrs. Jane Louise Norman of Washington sustained bruises and a head cut after her car skidded on loose gravel on Wayland road south of Red Brie school. The vehicle left the road and overturned, sustaining heavy damage.
Washington board of education announced that Stewart school on North Fourth avenue will open a few days later than other buildings due to unfinished interior work. The delay affects only Stewart. other schools start Tuesday with grade and junior high classes, while open house will follow once interiors are complete.
D C Russell 69 a concrete and stucco contractor died suddenly from a heart attack about 9 30 this morning while supervising a National Youth Administration crew at Case athletic field. He sat in his car and apparently dozed off. Burial at Elm Grove cemetery after services at L A Jones funeral home conducted by Dr F W Eastwood. He was born March 5 1870 in Monticello Iowa and had lived in Washington since 1915. Survived by wife Clara White Russell. He was active in politics and a longtime Presbyterian.
Benjamin H. Sadler Cedar Rapids architect sues the Independent School District of Washington over an architectural contract dated April 2 1935 for an addition at the junior high school project valued at 86495 02 dollars. He says the district abandoned the project and he is owed 1244 85 after already receiving 1350. Legal representatives Wagner Yoder Sigourney and L D Dennis Cedar Rapids.
Mrs Jens Hansen dies after being accidentally shot by 14 year old Norman Jesperson who was shooting sparrows at the Hansen farm. The youth did not know she was in an outbuilding and a bullet pierced the building and struck her neck.
Lake Park beekeeper Finance Vers lu is notes bees signal a long cold season after observing them for 20 years. He says the fall hive activity is complete now, a pattern that usually occurs in October or November.
NYA aid must be enrolled by noon Saturday September 2 for junior college students intending to register. If enrollment fails, Mr Mead will see students Saturday and Monday mornings. Owen Luther Samson age 86 died at his home 1420 East Washington after years of declining health. Born January 11, 1853 near St Minty, he moved to Iowa in 1856, married Sadie Dill in 1875 and Ina Faris in 1913. Survived by wife Ina, two daughters Nettt and Mrs G Conrad, son Merle Samson, two grandchildren. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery after services at Shermans funeral home Friday.
Work continues on applying oil to the last of three coats on 43 miles of Washington County dirt highways in the northwestern area. The maintenance coat is due this summer on roads treated previously, with other county road work and grading progressing despite wet weather.

Des Moines reports Don Radda of Washington Iowa received a special prize of 25 dollars for a single tall stalk in the third annual WHO Iowa State Fair tall corn sweepstakes. Hill of Batavia won first with a 21 foot 2 and a half inch stalk earning 100 dollars, an Oliver plow, and the Col B J Palmer trophy.
London reports censorship of incoming and outgoing cable, telephone, and wireless communications. New York dispatch notes AT and T says only official government calls between the U S and Europe are allowed as of 12 15 today. Telephone supervisors say all service with the continent is suspended. Official order bans acquiring more than a week’s food supply to curb hoarding, but no food shortage exists.
Paris report states the French council of ministers approved a decision to maintain all of France's engagements. The announcement comes as the government confirms continuity in foreign policy and commitments.
