At the State University of Iowa in Iowa City, 15 orientation events were prepared for incoming freshmen as classes are slated to begin on September 21. University registrar Prof. Harry G Barnes noted the schedule includes a first freshmen assembly on September 15.
The two day conclave of the national honorary chemistry sorority Iota Sigma Pi begins in Iowa City today with national president Dr Genevieve Stearns of the State University of Iowa pediatric department presiding at the opening session.
Stella Brown, companion of Jess Weaver, 24, who was sent to Fort Madison for 25 years for robbery, was given a suspended 30 day sentence by Police Judge Thomas B Powell. She promised to return to Anderson Indiana. Weaver, an escaped Michigan convict who confessed several Iowa holdups, and his girlfriend were captured at Ottumwa.
Cedar Rapids report states 47 year old Harry Achey of Mechanicsville started serving consecutive life terms in the Iowa Penitentiary one hour after verdict. Achey had killed his estranged wife's parents Clyde and Mrs Hoover of Lisbon on June 21 and was wounded in an apparent attempted suicide.
Margaret Lee Leeper, 21, of Waterloo, named Queen of Iowa Redheads before a full Des Moines grandstand. Actor Susan Hayward announced the victory, with Paul Whiteman placing the crown. Runners up: Mary Fordyce Emmetsburg Dolores Nyberg Postville Marguerite Miller Ames Bethine Swartz Marshalltown Evelyn Gunter Mount Pleasant.
WPA officials said a new Iowa state art director will be chosen from 52 Iowa art project employees. Francis Robert White Cedar Rapids artist and former two year director resigned to pursue private work. Headquarters were in Sioux City where he led a community art center. Selection may wait for Washington approval of state sponsorship as federal authorization expires August 31.
Arthur Lonning of Eagle Grove arrived Monday evening to take charge of the hoe department as assistant manager at the local Graham store. He has 2½ years with Graham and recently served six months as assistant manager at Independence. His hobbies include golf and his church preference is Lutheran. He has rented a room at 405 East Washington Street.
Records show 1685 federal retail liquor permits issued in Iowa for the year starting July 1. Permits cost 2 dollars, shield holders from federal interference when selling hard liquor by the drink or bottles. Des Moines accounts for 163 permits, with none issued in Washington. Fairfield and the Elks and Eagles lodges each hold three.
County Sunday school convention will be held October 3 at Eicher church near Noble. Registration and a morning business meeting precede a noon basket dinner and an afternoon program. Officers include President Raymond Rich and other county leaders from Winfield, Ainsworth, Brighton, Crawfordsville, Kalona, Washington, Richland, and labor divisions led by several superintendents.
Mrs. Carl E. Williams, 45, was burned to death when kerosene exploded as she prepared breakfast at her farm home near Iowa City. Her husband and young daughter were in bed. he carried the child to safety while he tried to save his wife. The home was destroyed.
Junior college registration will be held Thursday and Friday in room 211 at the high school. Tuition is fifty dollars per semester plus a three dollar activity fee. The activity fee admits students to football games and some basketball and other school events.
Ted Brown of the Legion committee named Leon Beatty post members serving as officials for the Jallopy Races next Monday at Blattmer field. Officials include judge Ted Brown timer Fred Downing starter William Tweeten pit managers George Baker Harry Simpson Matt Whittaker Ed Squire. Ace Lillard, stunt driver and safety lecturer, to appear with his company for the Labor Day program. Babe Lillard will also perform as driver.
A joint assembly of the junior college and high school will feature Dr. Eastwood as chief speaker. The event aims to share insights with students and staff during the designated gathering.
WARSAW Aug 36 4UP Poland today called up thousands of reservists to swell its army to about 1 800 000. Reservists with white cards must report within three days while all horses wagons and vehicles not needed for harvest must be placed at government disposal within seven days. Placards told reservists and the government said German aggression makes adequate defense imperative. Troops had previously been called up without public notice.
A man and four boys were arraigned before Justice Kd W Fillmore for trespass by carrying away melons from John Parcell’s patch west of Brighton. Walter Richardson, 32, received a suspended 10 day jail term conditional on cleanup and costs. minors face juvenile court with costs. They admitted taking about a dozen melons and paid Parcell for the fruit.
Frances Eileen Cathcart, 15, of Calhoun County, chosen Iowa's healthiest 4-H girl. She stands five feet three inches tall and weighs 126 pounds. Dorothy Hildebrand, 15, of West Liberty, finished second.
At rodeo in Winchester Indiana and the Canadian championship at Yorkton he performs daring automobile and motorcycle stunts. Four years ago he began these acts and has expanded his repertoire to make his company one of the four leading show outfits in America.
Theodore M Beenblossom died at 2 20 am at Washington county hospital after a brief illness. He lived on a Marion township farm, born January 27 1864 in Marton town. Survived by twin sister Mrs Josephine Puckett and sisters Mrs George Hopping and brother Wilbur Beenblossom. Burial at Elm Grove cemetery follows funeral Friday at 2 pm at L A Jones funeral home with Rev Arthur Atack of the Methodist church officiating.
Funeral services for GC McCaleb of Ainsworth will be held Thursday at 2 30 PM at the Methodist church in Alns. The obituary notes his role as a funeral servicer and local figure.
Lucile Clark petitions the district court for a divorce from James B Clark and requests restoration of her maiden name Lucile Barr. The petition, prepared by Attorney L J Kehoe, states they married on March 13 1936.
Fred Downing and Mrs Raymond Dayton announce a final Centennial commission meeting to be held Friday evening at Sunset Park at 6 46. The gathering is a family affair inviting all commission members committee chairs and active promoters and their families. More than a hundred are expected with a business session to present a final report on Centennial activities and a financial statement.

President Roosevelt announces moving Thanksgiving 1940 forward one week to Thursday November 21. The proclamation shifts the holiday to the next to last Thursday of November instead of the final Thursday as in prior years.

London reports Britain and France stand firm behind Poland as Hitler proposes a 24 hour ultimatum like demand for Danzig and the Polish corridor. British Foreign Secretary Halifax instructs Berlin embassy to reject transmitting any Polish talks to Berlin. In Berlin Hitler may sail soon and a broadcast is anticipated within 48 hours. Poland warns ships off the Gulf of Danzig of a danger point three miles offshore.
DES MOINES Aug 30 State Auditor C B Alerato announced a shortage of 2090 dollars in the state motor vehicle department funds. An audit covered Jan 3 to July of this year. The department was under the secretary of state until April 1 and then under the department of public safety. Records were poorly kept and not posted. The shortage likely arose from a cash handling lapse by an employee. Bonded officials may cover the loss.
