In August Washington County received 7.62 inches of rain, well above normal. The weekend lighter shower brought 0.27 inches, while the heaviest falls occurred on August 8 and 9 with 1.98 and 2.48 inches respectively, soaking into the soil to replenish moisture.
The Washington American Legion post calls for up to 75 volunteers to park cars for the Old Threshers Reunion in Mt Pleasant, Saturday through Monday. Contact Harold Jarvis or Maurice Meyer to volunteer. Entrance fees and transport will be provided, with free time to view exhibits.
The WACO Education Association invites the public to an open meeting with candidates for the WACO District School Board Election. The event is Tuesday evening September 6 at 8 p.m. in the WACO High School Gym in Olds, sponsored to let residents meet and discuss the candidates and their views.
Members of Local 735 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers voted down Iowa Southern Utilities Co work terms. Only 19 voted yes against 230 opposed as the two-year pact ends Wednesday. Talks resume with a federal mediator after July 25 meetings. The company sought 9.4 percent wage and benefit rise first year and at least 6.9 percent second year. Local 735 represents about half of Iowa Southern's 525 employees.
Des Moines, IA Interstate Power Co. gains interim approval from the Iowa Commerce Commission to raise electric rates in two steps totaling over 15.7 million dollars. An initial 4.8 million dollar increase is effective immediately, with an additional 8.8 million dollar raise set to take effect January 1. Refunds possible pending a commission investigation.
The season’s first tropical storm Anita drifted south of New Orleans and forecasters warned it could intensify to hurricane strength before landfall. Over 2,000 oil workers evacuated Gulf platforms while others secured shoreside facilities along Lake Pontchartrain as the National Hurricane Center cautioned of continued slow strengthening today.

An East Hartford man, 34, fatally hurt his wife Shioehan and their 4-year-old son during a siege lasting over 15 hours. He warned of an arsenal and fired at police as officers closed in, later dying in what authorities called a personal crisis. Police planned careful exit to avoid further violence.
A Pekin Community School team set a 24-hour world walking record by covering 125 miles 10 yards, surpassing the prior 100 miles 780 yards. Angela Eidahl, a fifth grader and daughter of the coaches, was the youngest participant. other walkers included Ericka Dahlstrom, Lynn Wonderlich, and Julie Greiner among nine others. The boys’ Iowa state record, held by the D and E Track Club of Martinsburg, rose to 142 miles 1,300 yards, over the prior 107 miles.
A Minnesota man, Charles A. Ogilvie, 30, of Wyoming, was critically wounded Monday night by shots from area law enforcement after a 33 mile high speed chase. He ran a roadblock at the junction of highways 114 and 92 and reportedly refused to halt. He underwent surgery and remained in critical condition at University Hospitals in Iowa.
Adrian Angelsberg age 42 of Riverside received a one year suspended jail sentence and two years probation after pleading guilty to larceny involving theft of well drilling equipment from Latta Sons Inc. in Riverside. Prosecutors and district court details are noted along with other local pleas and a high speed chase case ongoing.

In Johannesburg South Africa refuses to endorse an Anglo U S plan for a peaceful shift to black rule in Rhodesia. The sticking point is armed forces control during the transition with a proposal to include black nationalist guerrillas and place the military under a UN peacekeeping force. Prime Minister Vorster balked at endorsing that element after a six hour briefing by U N Ambassador Young and British Foreign Secretary Owen.
