First woman Iowa deputy to be arraigned on embezzlement charges

ELEADER Iowa UPI Clayton County Deputy Lee Brady, one of the state’s first women deputies, faces district court arraignment on September 8 for embezzling and larceny. Brady, 47, was charged with taking more than $20 worth of fuel in June and July and with $20 plus in July 28 thefts. She became a deputy in January 1973 and is suspended pending the case.

Three Die In Motorcycle Head On Crash Near Lehigh Iowa

Three persons were killed when two motorcycles collided head on on a Webster County road. Dead are Larry Johnson 20 Lehigh the driver of one bike Charles Short 18 Webster City and Valarie Mortenson 17 Fort Dodge riders of the other cycle. Johnson was eastbound about one mile east of Lehigh when the crash occurred.

Protect snakes eyed on Iowa endangered list

In Des Moines a $100 fine could be issued if a person kills a northern copperhead or prairie rattlesnake in self defense. The Iowa Conservation Commission approved the Iowa Endangered and Threatened Species List after ecologist Dean Roosa defended the right of these snakes to exist despite their venom. Commissioner John Link questioned how to respond to encounters with these snakes.

Wounded driver faces charges after 33 mile chase

Charles A. Ogilvie 30 of Sigourney faces three counts of assault and a driving while intoxicated charge after a 33 mile high speed pursuit that ended when a Washington County roadblock fired at his 1965 Cadillac. He was shot in the leg and treated at Iowa City hospital in stable condition.

Wisconsin manhunt widens for Michigan prison fugitive

Douglas Henry 22 of Lansing tied up a 70 year old man and his 59 year old wife and their 14 year old son on a 40 acre deer shack near Widen Wisconsin Rapids. He abducted Evelyn VanTassel 58 of Marquette and stole a sawed off shotgun and a rifle before fleeing in the Brockmans pickup. FBI widened the two state chase as the escapee and Mrs VanTassel moved from Michigan to northern Wisconsin, with no ransom demand reported.

Rains trigger flood levels on Nishnabotna and central Iowa

United Press International reports heavy rains Thursday into Friday pushed the Nishnabotna River in southwest Iowa and the Middle and North Rivers in central Iowa to flood levels anew. NWS warned crests near 22 feet at Hamburg and Pisgah around 22 feet, with main impacts on fields and secondary roads.

Killer had history of violence in family tragedy

Kathleen DeCorleto, ex wife of killer Frank DeCorleto, testified he was diagnosed as schizophrenic paranoid at 14 and heavily sedated, as he killed his second wife Shioehon and 4 year old son Frank III before killing himself after a 15 hour stand off. He had prior arrests for carrying a weapon and stabbing.
