Police in Memphis said two suspects were arrested at 12:30 a.m. CDT behind Elvis Presley’s mausoleum at Forest Hill Cemetery after reports a plot to steal his body was uncovered. A third suspect was being sought and initial reports claimed armed suspects with explosives.
New Williams Penn College in Oskaloosa Iowa will construct a 35000 dollar football and track stadium. Groundbreaking occurred Sunday with major excavation planned for fall. The complex will feature an eight lane 400 meter oval track with curbing and crushed brick surface and is scheduled to open spring 1979 with football games starting fall 1979.
KILJ-FM in Mount Pleasant Iowa has been sold by Pleasant Broadcasting Corp to KILJ Corp. Pleasant Broadcasting is a subsidiary of Mitchell Broadcasting which owns KGRN-AM Grinnell. An application for transfer of ownership has been filed with the Federal Communications Commission.
Bob Fleming, 24, an engineer from Taylorville, Illinois, shattered the Illinois Cow Chip Throwing Championship record by tossing a six inch cow chip 199 feet 1 inch. Kale Hindman of Russell Springs Kansas had held the prior mark at 193 feet. The contest drew about 200 spectators as chips flew and manure chunks pelted the crowd. The national tournament is slated for next April in Beaver Oklahoma.
Bombs and fire at a Pacific Gas and Electric substation knocked out power to 6,016 homes in Sausalito. Explosives were placed on transformers and a fire followed. power was restored to most homes within 3 percent hours, but 1,355 homes remained without electricity for up to 24 hours. A portable substation is en route to bridge the outage.
The FBI assumed control of a five day kidnapping case involving escaped prison farm trusty Douglas Henry and hostage Evelyn VanTassel. A Wisconsin witness saw them near Langlade County in a blue Volkswagen Dasher, prompting authorities to widen searches across northern Wisconsin and adjacent Michigan counties.
Three local men from Washington County chased a suspect in Iowa City after shots were fired at their car near a power plant. The pursuit ended with the arrest of Stephen Seger and Mary Lou Funk on multiple drug charges and weapons offenses, and police confiscated amphetamines morphine marijuana and prescription drugs from their car. Seger and Funk were later released on bond as investigators prepare further testimonies.
Soviet leader Brezhnev pressed Carter to stop a planned South African atomic test. The U S and Soviet Union coordinated to deter the test, with high resolution satellite imagery and diplomacy. South Africa reportedly halted the test and Carter sought to keep ties for African black majority rule.
Heavy storms drenched central and southwest Iowa with up to eight inches, flooding farms and streets. Des Moines totals reached 16.81 inches for August, shattering old marks while Gilman recorded 15.5 inches. The East Nishnabotna River rose to about 13 feet in eight hours. no injuries were reported.
Zone 13 forecast shows partly cloudy conditions tonight and Tuesday. Low temperatures near the upper 50s, with a high around 80 Tuesday. Winds are light and southeast tonight.
Des Moines officer Dennis Hill 30 died after a long fight from shotgun blasts received when a suspect Anthony Clayburn 23 was fatally shot by pursuing officers. A second officer was wounded and a fourth man treated for shotgun injuries. Police Chief Wendell Nichols urged calm amid tensions in the near north side as the force investigates the self defense claim and links to a late acquittal of a previous policeman’s killer.
Des Moines IDPA reports Sen. Dick Clark reacting to Forbes calling the farm bill a great treasury raid. He notes farmers lose money from corn prices, cites $1.58 paid at an elevator versus $2 production cost, and outlines farm bill provisions and potential sugar-price concerns and presidential veto risk.
A committee of the Southern Governor's Conference killed a resolution opposing any reduction in U S control of the Panama Canal. Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards led the effort, but the 3-3 vote, after a sixth member joined, blocked it from advancing to the full conference.
Washington Community District schools opened the 1977-78 year with 1,975 students K-12, down 74 from last year, Supt. E. K. Schlapkohl reports. Non-resident special ed students remained 11. Biggest drops at Stewart and the junior high. St James parochial school starts Aug 24 with 82 elementary students.
Three key promoters of the bankrupt Progressive Farmers Association received over 1.1 million dollars before the collapse, per canceled checks in Securities and Exchange Commission files. Donald E. Burks, former PFA president, was paid at least 502000. Darence Cloninger, a PFA consultant, at least 343000. Carle Bledsoe Jr., another former president, at least 306000.
