The Washington Community School District opened with 2,063 students, down 54 from last year. St. James Catholic School added three pupils, while Stewart Elementary and TMR special education classes reported higher enrollment. The district projects about $56,400 less state aid due to fewer resident students.

Fire damages Crawfordsville home of Chuck Duttweiler
A Saturday afternoon blaze gutted a Crawfordsville home owned by Chuck Duttweiler, starting in a bedroom where candles were reportedly used by children. The fire caused heavy ceiling damage, broad smoke and water damage, and loss of clothing. Shirley's Ceramics, run by Mrs. Duttweiler, also sustained damage. The alarm sounded around 12:30 p.m.

Bill Whittenberg Jr., 17, of Washington won the $2,000 top prize with a vocal solo. Kinross entrant Jim Bringman, who won Washington County Fair, placed fifth. Washington County had two finalists among nine at Des Moines. Kristi Beckwith, 20, from Iowa City won $1,000 for second place. Lisa Kutschler, 16, a gymnast from Fort Madison, took $700 for third.

Swine Tour Planned by Washington County Extension
The Washington County Swine Tour departs the County Extension Office at 7 30 a m on Wednesday September 1 with Jim Frier coordinating. About ten places remain for a $5 registration and wives may join. First stop is Jim Broghammer farm near Ryan raising 2000 hogs in a confinement farrow to finish system in a remodeled dairy barn. Next is Don Webers Hopkinton with partial slotted finishing high moisture corn feeding and grass silage to sows. Noon lunch at Farm Bureau Building with Klein Lubben on high moisture corn and George Anderson of Iowa Livestock Inc a 700 sow co op. Afternoon visits include Bob Maier Dundee with solid floor low profile finishing building then John Airy farm Central City with open front partial slotted finish building and 3000 to 4000 hogs yearly.

Gift to Cornell funds science center in Shaffer memory
Exxon securities valued at 127408 were given by Vera Phelps Shaffer and her late husband Dr. Sherman S. Shaffer to Cornell College San Rafael California. The gift funds a life income annuity and will aid the completion of the 2 million science center named for Dr. Shaffer. Shaffer died Oct 20 1967.

Harper a former KCRG TV anchor who was fired after a 1972 scuffle with station chief engineer Walter Alliss in Cedar Rapids Alliss required 24 stitches in his face details show the dismissal followed the incident and the ruling resolves the civil claim. In a separate item Birmingham Iowa authorities investigated the theft of 179 hogs valued at about 18000 from Heinold Hog Market near Birmingham involving Van Buren County Sheriff Department and Iowa Highway Patrol.

Debates Approved for Ford Carter Campaign Race
The Federal Election Commission unanimously allowed the League of Women Voters to sponsor presidential debates between President Ford and Senator Carter. The FEC said the $150,000 cost is not a contribution under the 1971 act and can be funded by private donors or political action committees. Carter and Ford tentatively agreed on three 75 minute debates beginning in late September, with debate topics to be broad rather than limited to a single issue.

Haitian refugees reach Miami by boat in record group
The largest Haitian refugee boat arrival to Miami docked at Biscayne Bay Sunday night. A 50 foot sailing vessel carried 103 men 38 women and four children. Coast Guard took all into custody and handed them to immigration officials. They reported 15 days at sea with four days without food or water. An immigration inspector doubted their tale saying they appeared too well for the ordeal.

Blind checker player fails at Iowa State Fair tourney

Blouin predicts House tax vote on farm estate gift reform
Rep. Mike Blouin says the House will debate Monday and vote Tuesday on a tax reform bill altering estate and gift tax rules for farmers and small businesses. Doughnut Girl Stella Young Still Notable at 80 in Chelsea
Stella Young, 80, Chelsea native and Salvation Army veteran, was honored for nearly 50 years of aiding servicemen at home and abroad. She served as the first doughnut girl in World War I France, later helped run USO clubs, aided blitz survivors in London, and worked with troops in Korea before retiring as brigadier general. A Chelsea street corner was named Brigadier Stella Young Square.
