Samuel A. Stephens of Ainsworth Dies at 79
Samuel Allen Stephens, 79, of Ainsworth died Saturday August 28, 1965, in Burlington Hospital after a month of illness. Funeral Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Ainsworth Methodist Church with Rev. Stephen Root Jr. burial in Ainsworth Cemetery. Jones Funeral Home in charge. Survivors include wife Mildred, three children, six grandchildren, one brother and two sisters. Stephens was longtime bank cashier, farmer, and active in church and community affairs. He attended Muscatine High School and Iowa State College, married Mildred J. Stearns in 1916. He played in the Ainsworth band and sang in church groups.

Don Radda Captures Nine Blue Ribbons at Iowa State Fair
Don Radda of rural Washington collected nine blue ribbons with his exhibits at the Iowa State Fair last week. He took first in barley wheat soybean and oats and won the sweep stake banner for oats. He also claimed multiple firsts in corn including a 10 ear exhibit and several other entries, plus seconds thirds and fourths across 12 additional displays.

Western corn rootworms found in Washington County
Western corn rootworm adult beetles were found in three locations in Washington County on August 27 and 28. Jim Frier, County Extension Director, said heavy populations were in Sev enty Six Township on two farms and a southeast county area near Crawfordsville. He warned that where populations are high this year, stronger chemicals may be needed next year due to resistance, noting beetles migrate from the west and urging farmers to inspect fields. The insects resemble the small green Northern rootworm but have three lengthwise bands on the back.

Cosmic champions Gordon Cooper and Charles Conrad sleep late aboard the USS Lake Champlain after their 3.3 million mile Gemini 5 mission. Simpson Family Involved In Cedar Falls Crash
The Duane Simpson family from Cedar Falls were in a Sunday night accident about thirty miles south of Vinton while returning from a visit. Mrs. Simpson suffered severe head wounds and facial injuries after being thrown through the windshield. Linda 6 and Lisa 2 1 2 were treated for injuries. The injured party were hospitalized in Vinton and Cedar Falls. all were reported in satisfactory condition today.

Old Timers Named King and Queen of Local Third Century Club
The Evening Journal Three Quarter Century group honored George Freyder a 100 year old Kalona man and Mrs Frank Gobble of Washington aged 91 as king and queen at the annual dinner in the Methodist Church. About 160 attended with Rev Stan Woeste delivering the keynote. The event featured Johnson staff and guests, with Mrs Lester Luckenbill and flowers by Earl Nicola.

Dr David Gregory, DVM, leaves Sunday by plane for New York to join a delegation for a three week trip to Europe. The Iowa Veterinary Leaders Goodwill People-to-People Travel Program group will visit Germany Norway the Soviet Union Hungary Belgium and Switzerland. He will also spend a few days in England. Before leaving Wednesday the group will visit UN headquarters in New York. He will be in Pennsylvania Monday for a Gregory family reunion and visit his brother in Murray Hill New Jersey before departing for the trip. He expects to return about September 28.

Heavy weekend rains flood Washington area and wash out bridges
Washington recorded 4.14 inches of rainfall over the weekend with heavy showers lingering Sunday night. Basements flooded due to a overloaded sewer system and water backed up into the North Second Avenue underpass. County roads faced closures as bridge approaches were washed out, including an older wooden bridge south of Crawfordsville swept away. Hansen Construction Co moved farms near Fern Cliff to avert washout while a dragline remained isolated by rising water.

Daily B52 Attacks Expected in South Viet Nam War
UPI reports five B52 raids in six days with plans for a daily schedule amid increased air strikes on Viet Cong targets. Two American planes lost Sunday, including an F105 Thunderchief, presumed captured pilot, and a reconnaissance pilot killed in South Viet Nam. On the ground, Viet Cong guerrillas attacked outposts southeast of Saigon. Marines near Da Nang pushed 100 Viet Cong from a village, with light to moderate government casualties.
