A lumber truck attempting to pass collided head on with a Greyhound bus west of Vinton near the Texas Louisiana line. Eleven people died and 27 were injured, with 3 in critical condition. The bus carried 36 passengers, and responders worked over two hours to reach the trapped truck driver. Names of the deceased will be released after relatives are notified.

Des Moines police shoot suspect during high speed chase
Des Moines police fired at three men during a pursuit reaching 90 mph. Anthony Brugioni, 25, was shot in the back and listed in fair condition at Broadlawns Hospital. Den nis Richard Otto and Johnny Dean Meyer, both of Des Moines, were arrested. Otto is the governor’s son-in-law.

County ASC committeemen were elected this morning at the ASCS office. Howard Lins of Brighton was named to a three year term and chairman. Sam Boyd of Ainsworth became vice chairman on a two year term. Henry Berger of Wellman is the regular member with a one year term. A teenager, Martin Milkart, 15, Audubon, was killed in a one car crash seven miles north of Atlantic. Driver Ray Baier, 18, rural Atlantic, and passenger Roger Fowble, 17, Brayton, were hospitalized. The Iowa highway toll rose to 458 day to day. A separate two car crash near Ida Grove killed Karen Beth Lee, 21, Le Mars, and Martin Palzien, Wall Lake, with Dorothy Jane Beevar, 16, also dying in the Ida Grove hospital.
