J J Roberts of Cotter, assistant principal at Columbus Junction schools, was held up by three armed men on the road between Columbus Junction and Cotter. Major Smythe was found dead in his bed at four o clock this afternoon at his Southwest Washington home. He had suffered heart disease for some time but recently felt better. The ladies of St James church will not hold their annual festival on the north side of the square. It will be held in the vacant room four doors south of Ron and Nichols grocery next Wednesday and Thursday. They will serve meals and ice cream. May Eagle and Blanche Glick are prize candidates. Everyone is welcome.
A Friday crash near Olds involved a train at 40 mph as baggage car trucks left the track. Two cars telescoped while passenger coaches stayed on rails. About twenty-five passengers were shaken but unharmed. Track reopened Saturday after extensive damage. Local observer John Clifton, painting nearby, witnessed the wreck.
The Chase Lister Co will give a beauty present to the lady with the lucky number this evening at the Graham. Numbers are handed to every lady at the show and the high-grade bicycle giveaway is planned for Saturday. Tonight’s play is Against the World with free tickets for ladies and varied seating prices. The band concert last Saturday drew a large crowd.

Rogers of the Mt Pleasant News offers a two column write up claiming the Washington county delegation will stay through November with Palmer’s nomination likely. He argues the delegation’s fair dealings with the Winfield faction pressure Hopps to concede. He urges Kopp and Huston to withdraw to back Palmer and promises continued reinforcement of the delegation.
The Christian Scientists have organized into a church named First Church of Christ Scientist Washington Iowa. Meetings are in the Scofield room near the square every Sabbath at 10:30 a.m., with Sabbath school at 9:30 a.m. and Friday evening meetings at 7:30. The next Sabbath’s subject is Righteousness of Giving.
A pin fell from the driver on locomotive No 95 at Cotter yesterday morning causing the driving rod to drop and severely damage the track for several feet. A repair crew was sent at 10 a m to clear and fix the section.
