White Man Attacks Williams at Lusaka Airport During African Tour

An unidentified white man punched Assistant Secretary of State G. Mennen Williams at Lusaka airport as he began a Congo tour stop. Gov. Sir Evelyn Howe and aide tackled the assailant while Mrs. Williams aided her husband. Williams continued his trip and met Congolese leaders, praising unity while U.S. aid was discussed.

Farewell Party for Las Vegas Priest Crowley

Las Vegas honored Father Richard A. Crowley with an all night farewell at the Convention Center as he prepares to leave for Springfield Illinois. The priest known for late Masses joined in a jig and sang with a comedian while awards from the American Legion Veterans of Foreign Wars and his congregation were presented. He will serve at St Josephs in Springfield beginning Sept 2 and previously started 439 am Masses for hotel workers and entertainers.

Negro Leader Flees After Raid in Monroe

Police said a black leader charged with kidnapping a white couple during racial violence fled Monroe after a raid on Robert Williams headquarters. About 50 officers patrolled the city around the clock as FBI Alert was sought and Williams remained at large.

Four local public schools opened for registration with total district enrollment near last year. High School enrollment stood at 556 pupils by noon, up from 520 at end of last year’s first week, with minor week-end adjustments expected as late registrants arrive.

First Peace Corps Leaves U. S. Today

The first Peace Corps delegation left the United States with President Kennedy blessing, 80 volunteers gathered in the White House rose garden heard that their work could have far reaching influence. One group heads to Ghana to teach in secondary schools with two weeks extra training in Lagos. The all male group departs for Puerto Rico then Tanganyika to aid in farm to market road planning and construction.
