Ninety-five percent of Madison county voters supported a county memorial hospital bond issue during a special election. With 18 of 19 precincts reported, 3,406 votes favored the $190,000 bond while 188 opposed it. The hospital total cost is $150,000, with the rest to be raised by subscription.
Des Moines reports hot weather helps the Iowa corn crop with four to five weeks of favorable warmth needed for a strong yield. Some southern and western areas suffer drought, but overall progress in the past week has improved prospects. Soybeans bloom or pudding stage. weed control remains a challenge. fall plowing begins as ground stays hard and dry.
Vernon Denman, chairman of Draft Board 6 in Des Moines, withdraws his resignation after state headquarters authorizes the board to induct Robert Brashares, 18, son of Bishop Charles W Brashares. Brashares is ordered to report for induction despite his telegram denying intent to enter the service.
Businessmen swept and hosed the Charles City Main Street district as thousands of river moths swarmed the area Monday night. The insects had previously clustered near the Main Street bridge, with heat and street lights blamed for the sudden mass migration.
The body of Mrs Charles Pratt, 28, a bride missing since Sunday, was found Tuesday in the Mississippi River near Waukon Junction, near the couple’s honeymoon cottage. Sheriff Bulman said there were no marks suggesting violence or foul play. Bert Williams of Harper recovered the body.
Four American fleets led by Halsey Spruance Kinkaid and Fletcher will occupy and control coastal waters of Japan and areas held by Japan. The Seventh Fleet will cover Korea landings and waters off China from Hainan northward including the Yellow Sea. Three amphibious task forces under Adm Turner will operate under Third Fifth and Seventh Fleets.

At a Crawfordsville gathering of the Washington county American Legion officers for the coming year were chosen. Fred Downing of Washington was elected county commander and Preston Wolf of Washington county adjutant. Downing, absent, indicated he cannot accept due to his district liaison duties. New officers will be installed at the next county meeting.
President Truman released army and navy findings faulting General George C. Marshall while defending him. The reports criticize Admiral Harold Stark and Admiral Husband Kimmel for failure to demonstrate superior judgment. Stimson and Truman rejected broader blame on Marshall and Hull while noting Stark and Kimmel are retired.
Radio Tokyo said radioactivity from the atomic bomb raids on Hiroshima and Nagasaki continues to claim lives weeks after the blasts. The broadcast cited a rising death toll beyond 90,000 and noted deaths from internal organ damage in patients with minor initial injuries. It referenced a Tokyo surgeon discussing a Hiroshima case where a bruise led to later organ changes.

Relatives in Washington learn of the sudden death of Nate Fields 48 of St. Joe Arkansas after a heart attack on the highway near his home. He taught manual training and directed a school band in Boone Iowa for 12 years and retired two years ago. Survived by wife Alice Wilmering two sons Robert Allen and James Nathan two brothers J W Bud and Richard Fritz an aunt and two uncles.
Allied forces prepare for a massive seaborne and airborne invasion of the Tokyo area. General Douglas MacArthur arrives at Okinawa with airborne troops to land at Atsugi airfield and near Yokosuka as Admiral Nimitz takes command in Tokyo Bay.
Eugene McCormick former Washington high school athletic coach and trainer has taken the Des Moines Register and Tribune agency manager post in Knoxville Iowa starting September 5. He will oversee subscriptions and carriers. McCormick is a popular figure among local students and is city golf champion and a noted football basketball referee in the region.
Mrs. Nancy L. Fleming 91 died at home of her daughter nine miles west of Washington after a long life from Ohio to Iowa overland. Survived by one daughter, one son, 15 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and a great great grandchild. She was a longtime Washington county resident, Methodist, and WCTU member. Funeral services planned for Friday at 2 PM at L A Jones funeral home with Dr. Fred Miller presiding. Burial Elm Grove Cemetery.
