Dr J J Noonan was summoned to his Masonic temple office about 7 30 p m by a caller claiming to need care. A gunman forced the physician to open the safe taking around 100 dollars and keys, then bound and gagged him before fleeing with an accomplice waiting outside.
Charles W. Harwood of Chariton pleaded guilty in district court to burglary and received a 20 year sentence in Anamosa reformatory. He admitted entering his aunt Catherine Fowler’s Boone home and stealing $600 from a tin box pried with a bottle opener on July 19. Sheriff Wilkins and County Attorney Schroeder brought Harwood back from El Centro, California where he was arrested.
In Des Moines a Republican farmers conference heard Rep Fred C Gilchrist warn that farm prices will fall after the war as they did after World War I. He said Republicans must prepare for the postwar situation and may bear responsibility for meeting those conditions.
Patrolman Donald D. Danford of Council Bluffs and his wife were injured when their car collided with a vehicle driven by Henry Bierbaum of Griswold west of Lewis. Danford suffered serious hip and pelvic injuries. Mrs Danford’s injuries were not immediately determined. Bierbaum reportedly turned left in front of the Danford vehicle as he drove west.
DES MOINES The Iowa Health Department reports 44 sleeping sickness cases this month with no alarm from officials. Dr C B Wagner compares encephalitis to polio and notes cases likely to rise until the first frost. The department records 12 deaths in the year to date, with deaths spread across January April July and August.
Washington World War sailors form a committee to support Iowa navy recruitment efforts. Ar chie Buwer Harry Sowden Stanley McKeone Charles Marek Bernard Walker Kenneth Carris Bill Henss and Eli Plank join the group to advise aspiring recruits and promote the navy as a path to trade skills useful after service.
The 113th Cavalry is retreating and expected to capture, camped among pines and pecans. Mr and Mrs Preston Wolf arrive for a visit.
A brief Journal note reports First Lieutenant Walter G. Conner receiving a captain’s commission to lead troop D, 113th Cavalry, replacing Captain Jay Brown who moves to command the regiment’s service troop from Burlington. The letter from Corporal Edgington describes maneuvers in Kisatchie National Forest Louisiana, heat, dust, and a staged “war” with Reds as the unit moves toward Derry and back.
Berlin dispatch reports Hitler and Mussolini outlining postwar Europe aims to end European wars by removing past causes. Communique says they met at northern and southern front headquarters to discuss military and political questions and vow to continue the war until victory. They claim destruction of Bolshevik danger and plutocratic exploitation will enable peaceful collaboration across Europe.
Laval, shot at Versailles, deteriorated further as doctors weighed removing a bullet lodged near his heart. His ally Marcel Dent, also wounded, remained in critical condition after the attack.
The Louisa county fair association plans a wild west rodeo at Columbus Junction fair grounds next Sunday and Monday with 2:30 PM and 8:30 PM shows to raise funds. Advertisements claim 100 people 100 buffalo many horses and steers and clowns, with acts borrowed from the Iowa state fair. Admission is 20 or 50 cents plus tax.
The narrator reports moving camps and preparing for a planned August 26 capture as armored troops join the fight. Harold P. Wolf is missing, with the family and regimental group attempting to hide in a grove of pecan trees while awaiting noon and a hoped ceasefire.
Three images by Mrs Omer Shields document a Marion county Kansas tornado. The left frame shows the funnel hitting the ground near three miles away and flattening Highland rural school. The center frame records maximum impact through Lincolnville a mile away. The final shot shows the funnel veering and breaking up within half a mile of the photographer.
A program of ten union evening church services in Central Park ends next Sunday evening with Rev. Al fred Trenerry of the Baptist church delivering the final sermon. The gathering opens with a piano prelude by Mrs. Charlies McConnell and includes an invocation by Rev. R. C. Keary, Scripture reading by Rev. Ivan Riess, prayer by Rev. George Kerr, and benediction by Secretary Leigh W. Soule of the Y M C A.
Two personal injury suits from March 23 allege driver F L Gladd turned into the path of the plaintiff’s car on Route 218 south of Crawfordsville, wrecking the vehicle and injuring Harry B. Smith and Genevieve Smith. Damages of 1100 and 114 dollars are sought. Van Allen & Van Allen of Mt. Pleasant represent the plaintiffs.
Court house will close next Monday in observance of Labor Day. County offices will also be closed that day due to the holiday.
Marriage licenses were issued yesterday at the court house to R. Stewart Bell and Margery A. Means both of Washington William O. Wright of Fort George H Meade Maryland and Margarette Cummings of Riverside Zene Major Kempf and Dixie Lee both of Mt. Pleasant.
Washington and Iowa City doctors led a two day event at the Nurses home with use of the hospital fluoroscope to evaluate children with suspected heart disease. Dr Betty Hase of Washington and Dr R L Jackson of Iowa City directed the clinic with Iowa City nurses and staff assisting. many county physicians attended for consultations.
Columbus City mourns as Eleanora Colton age 96 dies at home after a heart attack. Born in Ohio March 1 1845 she came to Iowa as a child and helped run the family hardware store. Survivors include two daughters and three grandchildren. Funeral arrangements by J C Richie.
President Roosevelt said his Labor Day radio address may include a significant international affairs statement. He noted Labor Day marks two years since the current world conflict began and that he planned to speak on the occasion.
Sheriff H. M. Putnam negates a Des Moines date line report that a federal liquor permit is held at Riverside. The Babe's T Stop-Inn, run by George Cooney near Hills in Johnson County was miscredited to Riverside. No federal liquor permits are held in Washington County.
Iowa’s healthiest babies crown two bottle fed winners at Des Moines fair. Larry Thomas Laverty, 23 months, son of Laverty farmers near Laurel, scores 99.30 with milk and corn syrup diet. Martha Ann Glenn, 36 months, daughter of Glenn farmers near Mitchellville, scores 98.99 with platinum blond hair and blue eyes.
Kenneth Freeman, elementary principal, urges mothers of new kindergarteners to attend with children at 8:45 at Stewart and 9:45 at Lincoln. Enrollments start 8:45 for all other elementary students. School runs 8:45 to 3:50. lunch 11:30 for grades 1,2,8 and 11:50 to 12:55 for others. early dismissals and room adjustments to follow based on class size requests.
