Relief comes for Iowa by action on scrap aluminum as four smelters are notified to remove the 289199 pounds collected at 11 centers. Removal will be gradual due to other orders and a shortage of railroad cars for hauling the metal.
In Vichy Aug 28 three men convicted of terrorism were guillotined in Paris and a government broadcast warned that France, with occupation authorities, will crush all terrorists after the Versailles shooting of Pierre Laval Marcel Dent and others. Police found three more volunteers armed to fight Russia. Dent is critically injured Laval serious.
Os kaloosa Clarence Holladay suffered serious burns entering his two room fire home to rescue his six year old son. The boy was safe outside but wandered into the crowd. Holladay was taken to Mahaska hospital and after learning the boy was all right the father collapsed saying it was worth the chance.
University officials estimate a year of study will cost about 500 dollars for a student. The breakdown includes tuition 130 dollars books 25 dollars board and room 275 to 200 dollars and miscellaneous 50 dollars as inquiries about costs and requirements rise.
Atlantic counsel for Mrs. Fanny Watkins of Red Oak seeks a new trial in the case contesting the will of her brother Lewis A. Cocklin of Griswold. The district court jury upheld the will in June. Watkins alleges jury instructions were oral and coercive and implied verdict unanimity. A hearing is set for Saturday.
Bol Stevens of Nevada Iowa leads revival meetings for the Christian Tabernacle congregation at the tent on the former Lincoln school grounds. He speaks on Palestine in History with moving pictures and Friday evening visitors from his Nevada church perform special music. Sunday night he discusses America Called to Arms with motion pictures of the nation’s defense program.
Gilbert Mills announces the grand opening of Mills Auto Service at 816 North Second Avenue. The new facility houses a complete Sinclair product line and offers washing greasing and general auto repair. Details appear in the Evening Journal advertisement.
A strike by 500 workers at the Great Lakes Steel plant in Detroit halted operations and forced 10,000 defense order workers off the job. Picket lines blocked passage, violence erupted in several skirmishes, and special police were assigned to restore order at the plant.
The county auditor offers plats showing landowners and acreage for Washington County townships. Each plat costs five cents, or 80 cents for the full sixteen plats. Plats reflect six mile square tracts rather than standard townships. Four thousand plats have been purchased by the county, with various tier allocations. Updated to July this year, last issued in 1954 with 4,800 copies then.
Senate approved a five member committee to investigate the gasoline famine on the east coast with a $12,500 budget. Deputy Defense Oil Coordinator Ralph Davies called sabotage a possibility behind misinformation. Davies testified the shortage is being used to foment war psychology and cited challenged statistics.
The first group of LO Mennonite conscientious objectors arrives at Denison to be placed in the CCC camp formerly occupied by World War II veterans. They will take over conservation and insect control projects, with Lieut. Col. Lewis F. Kosch supervising and Albert Foote serving as camp leader.
Trinity Lutheran church on East Second Street will host a double celebration this Sunday. At 10 45 a.m. a remembrances service marks the Tenth Anniversary with Rev T7C Meibohm delivering the sermon. At 7 20 p.m. Rev EB L Stuempfig will be installed as the new pastor, with vacancy pastor Rev Alb Bostelmann preaching. The occasion includes an installation ceremony and social gathering. Beginning Sunday morning services will resume at 9 30 and 10 45 a.m.
Washington businesses will close for Labor Day next Monday September 1 as announced by Secretary O K Schmitt of the Chamber of Commerce. Holiday closures include lumber yards barber shops and poultry houses with food stores staying open until ten in the morning before closing for the day. Drug stores will close at noon to four, restaurants keep usual hours, and Nicola Harmon book store will assist pupils with school supplies if needed.
City and county workmen began the first stage of street improvement covering about seven miles. Prompt weather allowed a substantial start on the task. The work started in the northeast part of town near the American Pearl button factory, with several blocks already engaged.
Earl Wood of Ainsworth awarded the general contract for the Washington county hospital addition with bids opened last week. The price runs around 50 000 dollars but reductions by the architect may lower the total. finish and equipment to be completed later while plumbing and heating go to Carson Plumbing and Heating. Elevator work is deferred and electrical work scaled back with materials bought directly. preliminary work will begin this fall as site plans stay close to those originally approved. Architect Carl Schubert of Boyum Schubert Sorensen, LaCrosse, Wis., attended.
Streets in that section have been graded with dirt and crushed rock spread and rolled. The base is prepared for the primer coat of road oil ahead of the top asphalt. Work will be pushed to start within about a week, weather permitting, aiming to complete surfacing before cold weather if possible.

Des Moines reports a record 2,150 federal retail liquor permits issued in the current fiscal year. Des Moines leads with 237 permits, followed by Sioux City 182, Dubuque 155, Davenport 139, while Cedar Rapids has 11 and Fairfield, Riverside, and Washington have few or none. Creston reports funeral services for William McKee a 22 year old infantile paralysis victim who designed his own iron lung after being stricken last September.
Three Audubon residents George Layland 36 his wife 32 and their five month old daughter died when their car collided with a truck nine miles west of Knoxville at the highways 181 92 and six junction. Mrs Layland survived with minor injuries Tony Sparano 29 of Omaha drove the truck uninjured. Layland reportedly did not stop at a stop sign. the trio were en route to Ottumwa for the funeral of Dallas Davis sister in law.
The census bureau reports that of 158,494 Japanese enumerated in U S Pacific territories in 1940, 157,905 were in Hawaii, 326 in Guam and 263 in Alaska.
McKee drafted the plans for a respirator that his uncle John Harshaw of Creston then built.

Virginia Eckels of the Washington county 4-H club earned third place in the Iowa Style Show at the state fair amid a large field of county winners. Virginia McLaughlin, also from Washington county, was among blue ribbon winners in the state 4-H club health contest for girls, placing high among 92 contestants.
Evangelist Edward Greer Dillon will give his last services tonight at the big tent on Wallace school grounds east Washington street with the topic Isaiah's Visions. Friday Rev C B Strong of Prairie Flower Baptist church plans to move soon and will speak in farewell. Beginning Sunday Evangelist Farquason will speak nightly except Saturday until further notice.
