Iowa needs teachers and the state superintendent Jessie M Parker calls on boards to suspend rules barring married women from teaching. She cites defense program driven shortages and warns against sacrificing core subjects like English math history government and science to field athletic or band success.
A new year in Moscow public schools begins next week with a brief first day on Monday and full sessions starting Tuesday. Superintendent E A Ralston notes all teachers will be present, including Margaret Moberly who will lead the high school and junior college commercial department. Moberly, from Richmond Kentucky, holds a BA from Eastern Kentucky Teachers College and an MA from the University of Chicago.
George W. Keller 56 of Iowa City WPA administrator died at Community hospital from injuries suffered in an auto crash August 20. He directed the work relief program in Iowa since its 1933 establishment, after his car left the road to avoid two boys on bicycles west of Grinnell.
Mrs. Lucille Leeds aged 22 pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated and was sentenced by District Judge W R Maines to six months in Rockwell City reformatory. Separated from her husband, her child stays with friends. Leeds, the first woman charged with drunken driving in Scott county in nearly three years, was arrested on Highway 61 and later held after a tavern arrest.
Mrs. Eleanora Colton, 96, longtime Columbus City resident, will be laid to rest Sunday at 2 30 PM in the Columbus City Methodist Church. Rev. C H Hiller will officiate, with burial in the Columbus City Cemetery.
Pierre Laval wounded seriously by assassins in Versailles is reported to have slight improvement after a quiet night. The official bulletin says his general condition is good. Marcel Dent, another victim, remains stationary but doubtful.
Two persons died and three others were injured in an automobile accident on highway 69 about 10 miles south of the junction with highway 10 near Clarion Iowa. The deceased were Mr and Mrs Chris Johnson an elderly couple from Kanawha.
President Roosevelt and his assistant Harry Hopkins begin weekend talks at Hyde Park that may shape America’s aid to Russia and influence Japanese moves toward a Pacific peace. The president plans a radio address Monday marking the war’s second anniversary and may hint at U S Japanese talks triggered by a note from Japan’s Prime Minister Konoye.
Des Moines Iowa The state attorney general ruled county employee salaries may be increased after board approval in the annual appropriation resolution. The opinion by William M McFarlin notes that if salaries are raised the department’s total expenditures must stay within the amount set in the appropriation.
The U S condensed and evaporated milk industry reports an annual value of about 210000 060 in products produced and sold, according to the census bureau.
London reports Britain and Russia have agreed on a settlement with Iran and will present terms jointly at once. The terms reportedly include occupation of strategic points in Iran and safeguards for Iranian oil fields and the supply line for Russian war materials from abroad.
Rev T C Meibohm, first pastor of Trinity Lutheran, now of La Crosse Ind, will speak at 10 45 Sunday for the churchs tenth anniversary. Rev E L Stuempfig, new pastor here and at Wellman Lutheran, will be installed at 7 30 evening service followed by a reception for the former pastor.
The Leon Beatty post American Legion will meet next Tuesday evening at the Legion rooms in city hall. The agenda includes committee reports an entertainment program and a feed.
The clerk of district court completed the docket for the September term to open a week from next Monday with Judge Frank Bechly presiding. Nearly 60 new cases were filed, including 24 law actions, 14 quieting title cases, five divorces, five foreclosures, three partitions, two appeals, one landlord's attachment, and one guardianship. Six criminal cases include four operating motor vehicle while intoxicated counts. Trial notices exist for 17 docket cases, with many to be tried at the term from those.
Postmaster M. C. DeLong announces Monday will be a holiday at the post office with no town or rural mail deliveries on Labor Day. General delivery windows open from eight to ten A.M.

Warm spell returns as temperatures reach 94 degrees yesterday and 95 degrees by early afternoon. Weather observers note continued hot conditions into the week with heat likely persisting.
Berlin dispatch says German courts martial condemned seven French soldiers and a Dutchman to death in Paris, and eight Belgians to death in Liege. A Belgian trial also yielded heavy sentences for three others including a woman. The Paris death sentence followed executions ordered by the German military governor.

John W. Nisle aged 75 of 727 East Washington street died yesterday at the county hospital after four months with a heart ailment. Funeral services are set for two p m Sunday at L A Jones funeral home with Rev Alfred Trenerry, Baptist pastor, officiating. Burial will be Elm Grove cemetery. He was born August 23 1866 in Washington county and married Mary G Stout March 30 1892.
Examinations for driving licenses at the court house yielded motor car operators licenses for forty individuals. Recipients include Keith Long and Dorothy Davidson of Washington, plus residents from Wellman, Brighton, Conesville, Ainsworth, Kalona, Wayland, Columbus Junction, and other nearby communities. Eight renewals, five instruction permits, and thirteen failures were reported. Four chauffeurs licenses went to Raymond Dawson, Van Crawford, Robert Megehelsen, and Donald Buster.
Dozens of youngsters gathered in the square to greet the speaker who held forth at the McDaniel drug store. The announcement of his coming drew an eager crowd, with many arriving early and more joining the growing assemblage later.
