Muscatine defendant Muscatine Norman Baker named in suit seeking a $34,493 judgment on 10 promissory notes dated April 6 1933 to December 21 1933 payable within 12 months.
Ann Eloise Tylor of Indianola is granted divorce from George Tylor. Five minutes after the decree, she reentered Judge Orville S. Franklin’s chambers to marry Leonard R. Rife of Des Moines. Proceedings indicate permission to remarry was granted after filing.
Davenport worker Ralph Hetzer, 35, of Davenport, suffered concussion brain head lacerations jaw fracture and spinal injuries when he plunged 30 feet head first down an elevator shaft while repairing the mechanism at the Cudahy Packing Co storage house. An employee restarted the machine causing him to lose balance.
Prof George R Dayes of the University of Iowa business research bureau notes a recurring U S pattern of high investment in securities over consumption. He cautions it may not be serious now but signals a possible maladjustment to be avoided as recovery continues.
Miss Crissie Lyon of Packwood, principal of Winfield schools for five years, will become Jefferson County superintendent of schools, succeeding Miss June Chidhester of Fairfield who resigned after twenty five years and will be principal at Washington grade school.
District Judge M F Edwards issued a temporary injunction at the request of St Johns Lutheran church and ten members blocking the City of Charles City from issuing a permit to Sinclair Refining Co for a station on Sherman Park opposite the church The city has conditionally granted the permit to Sinclair.
Gov Clyde L Herring telegraphed Gen Frank T Hines protesting the use of out of state coal for Iowa Veterans hospitals. The telegram said we need Iowa coal to keep Iowa miners at work. University of Iowa political science Prof Jacob Van der Zee warned of an imminent general European war, noting the Spanish revolution could spark tensions and the German Russian Japanese triangle as a key danger point.
Des Moines report states Porter 40, tied to a failed holdup with an accomplice against special constable David Doetz 30. Porter, recently released from Minnesota state prison for grand larceny, lived at William Bay Wisconsin and died at a hospital after a companion fled, leaving the wounded vehicle to attendants.
Des Moines dispatch reports seven men arrested in Rock Rapids Le Mars and Omaha ending a butter theft spree costing Iowa over 30000 since April. About 4500 pounds of hot butter recovered in Omaha. Ring leaders S W Harvey and Co. E Wright were extradited to Iowa. other suspects include Boyd Green L C Kirkpatrick. Authorities withheld several names pending further action.
Nineteen people wounded as rebel aircraft dropped four bombs in central Madrid last night. Government delayed confirmation for hours amid heavy anti-aircraft fire. Bomber fled under cover of rain after flares and strikes near government buildings. A Portuguese correspondent reports mass killings of whole families by Spanish leftists.
The Dutch Creek fair, one of ten held, cleared more than 300 dollars for St Pauls Evangelical church at Valley. Weather was excellent, crowds large, and events well patronized. The home talent play Big Ideas, directed by Prof. J A Taylor, pleased large crowds. Rev. Carl W. Klein announced a post event treat for the cast and director.
A slight improvement in Mrs. Robert Thompson’s condition was reported today after a serious automobile crash west of town early Wednesday. The physician said he now believes she has a better chance for recovery though she remains in critical condition. Meanwhile, no trace was found of Mr and Mrs Ralph Thompson, the patient’s parents, who were on an automobile tour in the west.
United States Senator L. J. Dickinson spoke at the Dutch Creek fair urging opposition to New Deal excess and warning that inflation and debt will threaten the middle class. He warned of a race to promise-giving that leads to chaos and dictatorial government, and explained inflation as devaluing the dollar while investment terms stay fixed.
lean obituary notice reports eleven year old Lewis Morrow son of Mr and Mrs Alvin Morrow formerly of this area died in Des Moines after a short illness. ten days earlier he fell from a shed striking machinery causing a hip cut. infection led to tetanus and death. he is survived by his parents three brothers and three sisters and his grandparents Mr and Mrs J D Hays.
Prominent West Chester farmers Ed Duvall and his wife aged 65 died from injuries after a car veered into a bridge rail on primary road 161 near Ainsworth. Their daughter and son in law, plus two grandsons, survived with other relatives. Funeral services scheduled Sunday at Washington Methodist Church.
Congressman Edward C. Eich er releases a telegram from Henry A Wallace regarding processing tax refunds for farmers in Iowa. The memo states there is no authority under the 1936 revenue act for refunds to hog producers who did no processing or pay no tax. The secretary of the treasury counsel warns farmers against engaging a commercial tax service offering refunds contingent on deposits.
Washington high school reports 125 freshmen registered for the year beginning Monday. Principal Miss Della Patton notes turnout already exceeds last year’s opening day. Seniors enroll Monday, juniors Tuesday, sophomores Wednesday. total enrollment expected near last year’s 462. Senior class this year about 80, down from 116 graduated last June.
Dean Harland Mead of Washington junior college announced registration will be held at the high school building on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 3 and 4, with classes starting Monday, Sept. 7. He expects enrollment at least as large as last year, when more than 80 students attended.
Des Moines reports Bess Short, a Moultam newcomer, won first prize in the creative division of the farm women hobby project at the Iowa State fair. Her talents span painting, clay modeling, and poetry, with poetry noted for a gentle critique of city-bred women.
