Ardelle Welle of Newton drove toward a roadside watermelon stand seven miles west of Newton when the car was struck from the rear by a Boone vehicle. The collision caused the vehicle to overturn, but the five girls aboard escaped severe injuries.
Ottumwa commissioner of public safety William L. Disbrow launched a campaign against gambling. He promised immediate investigations into the horse racing betting racket after reports gamblers driven from Des Moines by raids were locating in Ottumwa.
J H Miller of Tulsa Oklahoma told Sioux City business leaders that Iowa will be the first state to pave all of Highway 75 after current projects finish. Miller is president of the United States Highway 75 association.

Reggie White, 3, son of Mr and Mrs Reginald White, is in critical condition after an improvised spear made from a broomhandle struck the back of his head as children threw it at play in Spencer. The spear had a tail and was aimed to stick in a tree. one older boy missed.

In Des Moines a stowaway opossum caused a novelty entry for the Iowa State fair. The creature rode 125 miles in an evergreen tree seat from Hampton to reach the conservation exhibits showcasing unusual wildlife.
DES MOINES The state board of control seeks to recover 5317 paid since 1923 for maintenance of a one mile apar track from the M and St L railroad to the Eldora training school. The board argues a 1911 contract assigns payment to the railroad, not the state, but lost in district court and takes the case to the supreme court.
Adolph Lentz of Ridgeway visited Marcel Klemish in Decorah county jail and was later found wanted on a check charge. A Des Moines deputy sheriff escorted him back to face charges.
Irene Sechlanbusch who works at the Graham store and Verne Miller of the Armour company lived in Newman Grove Nebraska. Pure coincidence brought them to Washington.
George E Pratt eighty suffers a broken collar bone and bruises in a two car collision on the Wayland road two miles south of town. Tom Duncan driver of the Pratt car escapes with minor injuries. Crawford’s car suffers less damage and Pratt is taken to the John Davison home on South Second avenue.
Governor Herring appointed County Attorney P. J. Silegers of Newton as district judge to succeed the late D. W. Hamilton. The district includes Jasper Powesheik Mahaska Keokuk and Washington counties.
Triplet heifer calves born at the Herman Les singer farm west of Waverly thrive on cow milk fed by a pair method to grant each calf an equal chance at nourishment. The trio share uniform white face and ear markings and are nearly indistinguishable in size and weight.

The condition of Mrs. Robert Thompson who suffered a fractured skull in a car crash near West Chester early Wednesday morning was reported little changed today though somewhat weaker. The attending physician said a blood transfusion might be used later today if her condition does not improve.
Verne Nees aged 27, a father of five and highway construction worker, died when an auto trailer skidded into a ditch and pinned him as he and a companion attempted to push the vehicle back onto the road. This incident raises Iowa's 1936 automobile death toll to 296.

The Iowa Bankers association plans to shut KGHO Des Moines on October 15 citing financial burden and building demands. The move threatens Iowa's criminal activity radio network, with KNFN Waterloo KNFO Storm Lake KACC Fairfield and Atlantic as state-owned counterparts.
President Roosevelt canceled parts of a drought tour to Sioux City Council Bluffs and Shenandoah due to Secretary Dern's funeral in Salt Lake City. He will meet governors and senators in Des Moines, then proceed to Hannibal Missouri. The radio address was dropped.
Mt Pleasant scene of tragedy as 11 year old Lee White was struck by a forty pound iron fragment flung by a dynamite blast. The iron traveled about 300 yards and rolled several yards after impact. The accident occurred while a worn rock was being dynamited.
Tornado velocity winds ripped through northern Iowa causing about 100000 dollars in damage. Buildings lost roofs, corn blown down, and farm structures ruined in Wright Cerro Gordon Havancock counties. Heavy rain pushed monthly totals above normal with near three inches at Forest City and Iowa Falls and about two inches at Waterloo and Dubuque.
Mrs Helen Keck reports the birth of a daughter to Mr and Mrs Winfield G Wagener of Summit New Jersey. The mother Helen Terry is the daughter of Dr M C Terry and Ann Burrell Terry of Palo Alto California. The baby is named Abe Van Heusen Wagener.
