The day after several chickens were stolen from Ted Morehead’s flock a stray rooster was seen in the yard. Authorities believe the bird escaped from the thieves’ crates and may point to a possible lead in the theft case.
Harlan Ed Schraeder Paul Guyett and James Guyett sue Adolph Nelson for 1500 dollars after an August 22 accident when Nelsons mules escaped a farm yard and struck a wagon carrying Schraeder Guyett and Guyett, causing injuries.
Dr. Helen L. Dawson will become an instructor at the University of Iowa College of Medicine starting September 1. She will teach anatomy and anthropology and is among the few women to hold such a position in this medical school.
SHENANDOAH Estel Madison eleven broke hip and injured leg in hayloft fall on a Sunday school hike. He whistled to keep from crying while awaiting transport to a hospital. MT PLEASANT Rural Rome patrons honored longtime mail carrier Frank Cold age sixty five with a retirement picnic noting ninety days of sick leave remaining.
An airplane over a 2000 strong Iowa Ninth District gathering at Ter race Park on West Okoboji Lake dropped hundreds of anonymous pamphlets opposing the New Deal.
Thieves entered the Republican tent on the plaza south side and took felt Landon sunflowers and silk tasseled ivory elephants. No other items were taken. Party officials said a new supply of buttons and elephants will be available Monday.
At the 74th annual Iowa Friends gathering held at College Avenue Friends church, resolutions condemned sale of beer and intoxicants and urged drastic laws to prohibit their sale. Richard Newby of Des Moines was named superintendent.
AMES report notes religious tensions eased as six more town state college hogs depart this week for a 4000 mile voyage to China. Earlier shipments were delayed when a ship crew of Mohammedans refused to share a vessel with the porkers. The pigs were bought by Piao Sheo, a Chinese veterinary medicine student at Iowa State College, for the Chinese government.
Humboldt county students prepare to return to class while Hardy awaits a new school after a January fire destroyed the 50 year old building. An election is set for a $30,000 bond to fund a $52,000 consolidated school at Hardy. The rest of the year, pupils used a closed bank building and a former pool hall for classes.
William Stewart leaves tomorrow for Los Angeles to attend a music school after receiving a music scholarship at a California school. His move highlights the county’s growing engagement with the arts and higher education opportunities for local residents.
Wilmarth Ickes 37, secretary of interior Harold Ickes stepson, died by suicide at the latter's Minnetonka estate in Minnesota after a tuberculosis diagnosis. Eric Magnuson, the long time caretaker, found the body on the second floor with a revolver nearby. Ickes, married with three children, was treasurer of a Chicago printing firm. No farewell note was left. The death occurred on the first anniversary of his mother’s automobile death.
County Superintendent Lester B Kra said 97 of 104 rural Washington county schools opened today for a new year. Four started last week and three deferred to next week. Most town schools also opened. Kalona is delayed to Sept 7 due to building work. Washington town schools had been announced to open next Monday.

Troop T of the 18th Cavalry arrived home from Camp Dodge after two weeks of strenuous military instruction. Captain J Brown praised the unit as the best he ever led, with 59 of 60 members returning in good health. Charlies Beenblossom of Ainsworth was ill and stayed behind. One lieutenant suffered a leg scratch. another earned the nickname Junior during the hike.
Reports on Mrs. Robert Thompson who was badly injured in an automobile accident last week indicate continued improvement. Doctors and family are encouraged as she maintains progress and remains in serious condition but now has a good chance to recover.
Gen. Hugh Johnson, former NRA director, will campaign for Roosevelt in Buffalo on September 12. The announcement came from the Democratic National Committee in New York on August 31.

Bokun Germany August 31 Inter national News Service reports sixteen miners were killed by coal damp in a mine near Bokun today. The incident occurred as damp conditions caused a blast or collapse, authorities said.
Three persons were reported killed in an airplane crash near North Belmore New York today. Authorities said the craft went down shortly after noon killing all three aboard. The victims were unnamed pending notification and investigation.
Detroit report states the murder trial of twelve Black Legion members in the killing of Charles A. Poole is slated to begin tomorrow in the local court.
A coroner's jury withheld a verdict on responsibility for Lee White's death, 12, from a dynamite blast at MT Pleasant. Mayor Charles E. Heater and Police Chief Herman Miller testified they did not authorize Clark Linch and Marion Thorington to shoot dynamite, though Heater said he did not tell them not to.
More than 1y new cases filed for the September term of the Washington county district court open next Monday with Judge J. G. Patterson presiding. The docket shows 21 quieting title actions and a large share of law suits to collect notes, along with five divorce cases four equity actions two partition suits two guardianships and one landlord’s attachment. Criminal cases name five defendants, plus four more on larceny charges. Auto damage actions include Hotle v Pervieal and Wood administratrix v Moore, with prior March term proceedings noted.
George Fetters 86 died this morning about 11 at his daughter Mrs. Howard McBride’s home. He was born October 16 1849 in Farmington Tennessee and moved to the Pilotburg Washington area at age 22 then to Washington 22 years ago. Funeral Wednesday at 2 pm in L A Jones funeral home with Dr B F Schwartz officiating. Burial Elm Grove cemetery. Surviving are sons Ralph H Kansas City LeRoy Washington Arthur F Russell Town and daughters Mrs Albert Simpson Washington Mrs Otto Walton Richland and Mrs Howard McBride Washington plus 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. His wife Adelia C Keifer died January 18 1926.
Lou Duncan of Columbus Junction died this forenoon at the State hospital in Mt Pleasant. Funeral and burial services will be held here. He was 50, born locally, and survived by a widow Jessie Church two sons Jack and Eugene, a daughter Theo Gallagher, a sister Mrs Virgie Barnard, and a brother W I Duncan.
IRETON John Van Wye a retired farmer in Ireton found time heavy on his hands and began constructing his own gravestone from cement, detailing his plans and motivation in a personal project.
George Martin Tooman 76 died at home 218 West Third Street after long illness. He had a stroke three years ago and declined since last Friday. Funeral at Sherman’s funeral home Wednesday at 3 pm with Dr B F Schwarta officiating, burial in Eureka cemetery south of Washington. Born March 17 1860 near Moscow Iowa, he lived with relatives after parents died, later moved to West Liberty and Washington in 1906. A harness maker by trade, he ran a Washington harness shop until 1927 and then worked at home until illness forced him to quit. He married Mary Black in 1882. she died in 1905. He married Clara M Petratt on August 8 1917. Survived by wife, one daughter Carrie Fryant of Iowa City, one grandchild and three great grandchildren. One daughter and a child died previously.
Hundreds attend the double funeral for Mr. and Mrs. BE. E. Duvall who died from injuries in an accident near Ainsworth on Friday. The service at the Methodist church was led by Rev. and Mrs. A. W. McBlain. Pallbearers included John Powell Art Romine Sam Delong I. EK. Coffey Herman Luers Frank McFarlane Frank Pulver L. P. Jackson Howard Stewart F. M. Lindenmeyer R. C. Ferguson and Walter Helscher. Burial followed at Elm Grove cemetery.
Carroll county officials propose replacing the county home long described as a firetrap with a new fireproof structure. The project would be financed jointly by the county and WPA funds if approved by the Council Bluffs WPA office.
