A state motor vehicle department now issues snappy uniforms to its agents making them instantly recognizable on highways. Assigned under the Secretary of State these agents patrol to enforce driving regulations and reduce auto accidents.
Building permits issued in Decorah this year total 14 500 already this season a figure that suggests the city is a focal point for construction in Iowa. If municipal projects are included the overall value would rise to about 20 000.
Charles Keeney of Des Moines was detained by police after attempting to steal pens from the lobby desk of a post office. He allegedly tried to flee with the pens, leading to his arrest and subsequent questioning.
The river gauge at Davenport recorded an all time low yesterday morning with the water seven tenths of a foot below the tow water mark. Barge navigation is halted at Horse Island six miles below Davenport. Only light loads can move upriver via steamers used by Rock Island engineers, with drafts about a foot and a half less than regular tow boats.
John Schomberg sues the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul railroad in Muscatine district court for 1600 dollars after the July 21 1933 Gladwin freight wreck that killed three and caused extensive property damage. Dobry once ran a Davenport securities business and yesterday began a five year term at Fort Madison penitentiary after confessing to filing a false financial statement with the secretary of state. He stated, I should have done it long ago. His sentence began now rather than halfway through his potential term.
Senator Thomas D. Schall of Minnesota renews his charges in a second letter to President Roosevelt alleging the federal government intends to abolish private press associations in favor of a government news service.
T W Horrell 34 of Lone Tree was jailed after his Model T Ford slid into the Entiti river south of Kalona near the bridge on highway No 1. He was arrested by Sheriff Daryl Mathers and faces a hearing this afternoon before Justice J K Boyee to determine whether to hold him on the drunken driving charge. He admitted drinking beer but said he was not intoxicated. The couple had been staying at John Grecian’s home near Kalona.
Federal meteorologist Charles D. Reed reports Iowa will see rising August temperatures with highs in the mid nineties and no frost tonight. He forecasts above normal rainfall in September and October and notes 57 percent of northern corn should be frost safe by September first due to forced maturity from heat.
Doyle Jarrard of Washington placed second in the state 4-H health contest at the fair. The 18 year old, a freshman at Washington junior college, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Jarrard. He wins a silver medal and a trip to the Ames jumpy short course. First place went to Paul Shaff of Comanche with a gold medal and an all expense paid trip to Chicago.
Doyle secured the Washington county health championship largely through poise and machines. The Phy committee of Washington cosy doctors determined in their examinations that he is as healthy.
Supt. P. L. Jordan reports from Iowa City that Washington city water is satisfactory at this time. A sample from the 1,808 foot deep new well was tested, with periodic samples sent to Iowa City. No water shortage is indicated this year despite excessive heat and drought increasing usage.
Reed says July tends to bring rainfall into September, with August’s warmth tied to heavy October rains. Light frosts touched potato vines and corn leaves in north Iowa last week while drought persists in the south and west. Water shortages grow, pastures stay brown, and seeding of grass and crops is delayed until general rains arrive.
Donald Kinner of Noble Washington won the 1924 swine carcass contest at the Iowa State fair on Tuesday. His entry sold for 8.81 dollars, ahead of runners up Donald Livingston Monroe and Dale Williams from Iona City. Taylor Flynn Washington placed fourth with 8.59 and Cleo Yoder fifth at 8.52.
An Iowa Partier-Labor party rally is set for September 12 at Washington county city hall. Governor candidate Wallace Hirth of Sioux City is expected to attend and speak. The party formed at a July 21 state convention with Short named to lead the ticket.
Oshkosh Wisconsin grower C E Young started with six bulbs ten years ago. He has tended the gladiolas to reach more than 20 000 plants representing over 300 varieties. He aims to develop a reliable white variety to advance his collection.
Tomorrow the Dutch Creek fair at Ed Hotle timber tract southwest of Dublin brings events led by Rev Carl W Klein of St Pauls Valley to draw Washington and Keokuk counties residents. Highlights include two political addresses with Congressman F C Eicher in the afternoon for the Democrats at 2 30 and Dan Turner the Republican candidate for governor in the evening at 7. The event features kittenball gates and country teams playing throughout the day with hopes of a large turnout.
The Dutch Creek dinner tomorrow at 5 10 p m features an Eicher table for Washington county Democrats with the first district congressman as guest. Republicans will hold a separate seating at 5 45 p m after the Democrats finish.
Morning events include a town tournament and church chicken dinner. The afternoon features the Washington Concert Band and a home talent show after Governor Turner's address. Evening program at 8:15 includes Robertson Sisters, Archie Horak, Darktown Minstrels, a saw duet, a two act comedy The Red Lamp with Clay church cast, and tickets are 25 cents adults 12 and under free.
Washington Concert Band led by Fr L Mannhardt performs in Central Park at 8 with Pierce Knox as soloist. Selections include Were King Overture La Serenade Valse Espagnole Tip-Toe Through the Tulips Nola Silhouette The Pink Lady Florida Blues Gallant Seventh and more. An upcoming all religious concert is planned and cooperation with the Ministerial Association is sought.
New York August 29 mill owners meeting here rejected a last minute call for talks with United Textile Workers leaders who plan a nationwide walkout Saturday. The move blocks any attempt to avert a strike of about 600000 workers seen as the NRA’s most serious challenge yet. Owners say the threat is intimidation.
