Senator L. J. Dickinson assails the AAA as a flop and a quack remedy before a large Illinois farm gathering, quoting poetry to support his stance. In a CCC quarry near Calder, Darwin Anway, 19, of Cedar Falls, died when a 160 pound rock fell fifteen feet striking his shoulder, breaking his neck. Camp officials report he was the first corps worker to die in the seventh corps area.
Ferdinard Pecora, farmers counsel for the senate banking committee investigating Wall Street, will speak to the Iowa Farmers Union at the Des Moines convention. Milo Reno will also deliver a speech.

The senate special munitions investigation committee asserts a link between Sir Basil Zaharoff known as Europe’s mystery man and major war munitions manufacturers in the United States. The allegations will be aired during hearings in Washington.
A car from Ottumwa overturned on a curve one mile south of Crawfordsville, injuring Mrs Berge and causing minor injuries to four others. The vehicle rolled three times, front tires blew, radiator damaged, and the party was brought to a Crawfordsville doctor for care.
The local Ilown Continental Telephone Co. plans a two week September push to sign new subscribers as part of a nationwide rise in telephone service. Mr Crane notes a substantial increase is expected and an advertisement in this issue highlights the drive.

United Presbyterian choir led by Miss Carolyn Hamilton will broadcast Sunday at 9 15 pm on WSUI. The program includes piano pieces, choruses, solos, duets, and a male chorus with noted performers, following a prior summer broadcast. The district DAR meeting in Lowe City is scheduled for September 18 with a luncheon at the Memorial Union and state regent expected.
Hog prices eased today after a 25 day rise with a drop of five cents in Chicago and about ten cents in Des Moines. Receipts were light with a top bid around 7.76 dollars and some bids off more than fifteen cents.
Fairgoers returning home spoke proudly of the Washington Municipal Band with concerts yesterday. A veteran musician said the band was the best heard at the fair since his arrival last Saturday, as audiences applauded band numbers and William Stewart’s vocal solos.

Jerry Voorhis of San Dimas California was nominated on the Sinclair led Democratic ticket for state representative from Los Angeles County in Tuesday's Californian primary. His wife Louise Livingston Voorhis is visiting her parents in town.
At a Kalona hearing Justice J K Bovee found insufficient evidence to hold W Y Horrel of Lone Tree on a driving while intoxicated charge. He was sentenced to fifteen days in the county jail for intoxication with the term suspended on condition he leave the county. Witnesses testified Horrel appeared intoxicated after the accident near the English river.
Dr Lloyd Garrison chair man of the National Labor Relations board says the federal government will intervene to avert a nation wide strike involving 600000 cotton textile workers.
Martha Mathers placed second in the 4-H style show at the state fair. First prize went to Marcella Smith, 18, from Mahaska county, Oskaloosa. Esther Smith, Washington county, was rated but the score was not announced.

The walkout could test Roosevelt era reforms as local unions receive orders by noon. Muscatine button makers warn a textile walkout may halt a 3000-employee industry within a week.
