Richard D. Adams, 38, former Kalona mayor, charged with murder in his wife Judith Rae Adams’s Aug. 20 death, posted 100000 bond after a hearing. He must stay in state or on travel within specific counties with court approval and is under Court Services supervision. Preliminary murder hearing set for Sept. 10. Adams resigned as mayor and council appointed interim mayor pro tem.
Peter N. Rich of rural Brighton was found guilty Thursday in Washington County Magistrate Court of illegally selling alcoholic beverages to a minor. He was fined 100 dollars and ordered to pay 26.50 in court costs as the fourth such conviction in the county while Floyd J. Napp awaits trial and John D. Goldsberry plans an appeal to District Court.
The Washington YMCA resumes fall and winter hours from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, announced by Executive Director Don Turner. The facility had adopted shorter summer hours and closed briefly for a general cleaning.
In Iowa City two traffic incidents left two youths hospitalized. Vanessa R. Wasson 14 of rural Kalona was struck while bicycling at D Avenue and Seventh Street in Kalona. Patrick E. Flanegan 20 of Iowa City was ejected when his car left Highway 218 and crashed into a creek. Both were taken to Mercy Hospital with injuries not yet known. Glenda McArtor 16 of rural Wellman was charged with reckless driving and failure to stop after her car hit Wasson. Flanegan faced charges for driving left of center and failing to stop. police say he dozed off about five miles southeast of Riverside at 3:45 a.m. today.
Robert Hellman from New York City leads SCAD writing workshop reading poetry in Sunset Park Saturday August 28 at 8 p m. Featured poets from Iowa City include Chuck Miller and John Birkbeck. Public invited.
UPI reports Ford Motor Co workers in 39 states show strong willingness to strike if UAW leadership cannot secure a new pact by midnight Sept 14. Early returns from about 160,000 workers indicate over 97 percent approval while many favor a peaceful settlement as talks stall awaiting Ford’s economic offer next week after a 25 minute Thursday meeting.
President Ford outlined a national campaign focusing on meaningful jobs accelerated home ownership quality health care crime reduction life quality and world peace. He stressed the campaign would not be regional and announced key aides including Rockefeller Dole and Connally with plans to rally conservatives in California and beyond.

UPI reports Steven Fellman testified that Kissinger ordered 300000 carats of industrial diamonds released from the U S strategic stockpile to Israel, public criticism from industry, and concerns that stockpile sales violated the law and national security aims. The hearing explored whether Israel acted as a broker selling diamonds to other countries.
A coalition seeks a federal court halt to an Agriculture Department temporary rule allowing crushed bone in wieners and similar products. Judge Albert Bryant will hear the case next Tuesday on a suit by six consumer groups including the Community Nutrition Institute and the Consumer Federation of America, plus Maryland’s attorney general and Rep. Margaret Heckler. The plaintiffs argue illegal issuance of the rule, while supporters say it salvages up to one billion pounds of protein and expands meat supply.
Sister Mildred Trizil 71 died Wednesday in Cedar Rapids apparently from Legionnaires Disease linked to her attendance at the 41st International Eucharistic Congress in Philadelphia Aug 18. A funeral Mass is planned for Saturday at Sacred Heart Convent with a wake tonight. Previous cases tied to the Pennsylvania American Legion convention in Philadelphia last July.
Ambassadors for Ford and Carter held their first ground rules meeting with the League of Women Voters to outline the presidential debate framework. They agreed on some points, split on others, and planned to reconvene, while Carter and Dole continued their separate debate, focusing on embargoes and farm policy at events in Des Moines and Plains.
