A dog barking and pawing along the Mississippi river near Davenport drew hundreds to a ferry landing. A nearby bait can sparked a rumor of a drowning, but police found no danger. A Davenport girl said the dog simply followed her from the ferry.
Cedar Falls cannery starts operations with sweetcorn packing under contract from about 700 acres. The plant is expected to run three to four weeks. The cannery pays $7 per ton, $1 more than last year, boosting farmers' income with higher yields.
Clinton business and professional men report pleasing success in the annual campaign to raise funds for the Y M C A. Four teams red blue green and orange worked two days and on opening day pledges reached 2255 dollars, a splendid showing.
Voters in Lone Tree will cast ballots in a special election on a 13000 dollar bond to build an auditorium and gymnasium. If approved, the school board plans to seek a PWA grant to cover 45 percent of the construction cost.
At the Des Moines fair open livestock judging, out of state exhibitors led with purple ribbons in four divisions. J. J. Lynes and sons of Plainfield were the sole Iowa breeders to win purple ribbons in four Ayrshire bull classes, taking the grand championship with Fair Field's Admiral who was also senior champion.
Keokuk plans to invite the 1936 state convention of the American Legion. At a special meeting the Keokuk post decided to present the invitation when the group meets in Waterloo next week. Keokuk had bid for the 1935 convention but lost to Waterloo.
Police jailed a man identified as Robinson Crusoe, described as a Negro, for safe keeping after lodging in Newburyport. He then left for his native Kentucky following the night’s stay.
Senator Huey P. Long of Louisiana filibustered the Senate from dusk until midnight delaying the social security bill and related measures. The prolonged talk blocked the third deficiency bill funding social security, Wagner labor board, coal legislation, and railway pensions, until next January. Senate leaders expressed confidence a path to passage would be found despite the stoppage.
Rev. W. C. Witzigman and Rev. Carl W. Klein spoke on their life histories at the Rotary meeting. Witzigman recalled early country ministry pay and first funeral duties, while Klein described German upbringing, schooling, and progressing into the ministry, promising more later. Both men were described as having led useful, interesting lives.
Ralph Coppock of Houston Texas has passed the Texas state bar examinations and received his license to practice law. The announcement notes his family ties and prior vote as a Democratic candidate for representative in the 19th district.

Paul Horak was injured when his car slid into a ditch and overturned north of town. He is reported in favorable condition at the county hospital with non serious injuries, the most severe being to one leg.

Mr and Mrs Bert Booth joined the Fultons on a 2156 mile return trip from Santa Barbara to Washington in 60 hours after learning of Mrs Fulton’s mother’s death.
Butte police officers could not identify a man held here as a suspect in the Wayer Hauser kidnapping. He bore a resemblance to William Mahan, wanted for the crime, as of August 27 in Helena.
Harry Sizers took Patricia to Des Moines for the state fair baby health contest today, joining families at the annual event.
Chairman Carl W. Klein announces a skeleton program for Valley Fair at Dutch Creek today with events from 9:30 a m to 7:45 p m including kittenball games, athletic contests, races, nail and saw contests, exhibits judging, luncheon and chicken dinner, band concerts, an address by Judge J C Pryor, and a Japanese gardens evening performance.
Mr and Mrs Fred Maas dam visit the Des Moines state fair today. They attend exhibits and sample regional foods as the event continues this week.
J Milton Norton files suit in district court seeking 5000 against former Sheriff Daryl C Mathers and the Massachusetts and Insurance Company. He alleges he was arresting Sept 12, 1934 without warrant and jailed three days with no just cause. Ralph H Munro of Fairfield represents the plaintiff.
Alexander Green 85 of Columbus City died at home after several weeks illness. Born June 6 1880 in Blunt county Tennessee he was married to Elizabeth Green who died earlier. Survived by three daughters and four sons, four brothers and three sisters.
Former President Herbert Hoover writes to Hugh McCleery saying he received the August 9 letter after returning to Palo Alto and regrets it is too late to send a greeting for the 1895 academy class reunion. He adds he would have liked to participate in the fine occasion.
Mrs. Ned Brookhart died in Duluth during a visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Brookhart. The death caused by a heart attack. Ned Brookhart is the son of former Senator SW Brookhart. The bride died shortly after their June 29 marriage in Augusta Maine and will be buried there after a funeral in Washington last month.
Mr and Mrs Robert Kephart and Dr P Telford return from Eliza Mercer Co Illinois after a week visiting kin. They brought apples from trees planted by a grand uncle Harper Reed in 1840. The orchard still bears fruit and the visit revived old memories. Dr Telford last visited Eliza fifty years ago.
Harve Wilson and the Glenn Wilsons travel to Des Moines to supervise JoAnn in a baby health contest. The effort centers on ensuring good behavior and proper presentation for the event.
Edith Lucile Wood administratrix for William Gordon Wood seeks 25000 damages from R W Moore for his death on April 24 1935 near Monroe Iowa after being struck by Moore s car. The suit filed by H S Life and George B Baker alleges Moore negligence. A second suit by Martin McAdoo seeks 5000 for injuries from the same accident with the same attorneys.
Des Moines reports roofing nails littered a long stretch of road at the state fair grounds during the night. Officials sweep up the nails and deny ties to labor disputes that caused earlier fair picketing by unions.
Mr. and Mrs. John Hoodjers of Greene report their twins born on different days last week. A boy arrived at 5 P.M. Monday and a girl at 2 A.M. Tuesday. Each weighs five and a half pounds. A sixth-year-old daughter also lives in the family.
Waterloo Des Moines joined Davenport and Sioux City in inviting the Iowa Retail Grocers and Meat Dealers association to hold the 1936 convention. The convention city and association officers will be selected at the meeting.
Burlington officials rush airstrip repairs after Braniff Airlines complaints about loose gravel. The move comes following airmail service suspension ordered from Washington to Sept 1 until improvements are completed. Extra relief labor is being mobilized to speed the work.
The Harlan Mc Creedy home welcomed Dave and his wife from Bellevue Iowa and their son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Ross Galloway with family from Waterloo. The Galloway family delegates left for Waterloo this morning.

In Pylos troops fired on raisin growers during a protest over low prices, killing several. The demonstrators seized the telegraph office and halted trains while about twenty thousand growers marched toward Calamata.
Berlin reports a 24 year old Charlotte Juenemann was severely harmed today after authorities allege she allowed her three children to starve. The incident occurred August 27 and drew attention to child welfare concerns in the city.
