The Wild Cat Den state park near Muscatine will be dedicated September 26 with a brief program led by Governor Clyde L. Herring and other officials. A 4 bronze-table memorial to Clara and Emma Brandt, donors of the original site, will be unveiled at the 300 acre tract.
Davenport Fejervary Park reports six monkeys born in March now five inches tall marking a record in captivity. Iowa 4 H Club girls in blue toured Des Moines and attended the 1935 Iowa State Fair on a Sunday afternoon. They drew crowds, asked questions, and sparked chatter about cars and gardens.
An 11 month old boy, Randel, son of Mr and Mrs Marion Randel, drowned after falling into a water filled hollow tile in the family’s back yard. The tile two and a half feet deep had been used as a refrigerator and the body was found by Mrs Randel.
Leona Flan 20 testified she was abducted at Stevens South Dakota and held overnight by two men and a woman who tried to compel her to sign an affidavit denying prior testimony in a Woodbury county grand jury craft probe.
Nashua Becker daughter Renetta risked her life to save her high school diploma from burning farm home. The Beckers were traveling to Nashua when the house caught fire and returned home to find the blaze doomed. Renetta entered the blazing house and emerged unharmed with the diploma as the upper floor collapsed.
Lyons, now part of Clinton, will celebrate its 100th birthday with a three day centennial fete September 19 to 21. The event honors Eliah Buell who settled the site in September 1835 and built a log cabin later marked by a stone monument. Clinton is ten years younger than Lyons.
Des Moines reports Mrs Ida B Wise Smith national president of the WCTU urged. She said the cure for liquor evil and a mad dog alike is to cut off the tail right behind the ears. Mrs Smith traveled from Evanston Illinois to address a women's Sunday school class at the Iowa state fair.
Elijah Hummel and Jennie Ferguson Hummel, both in their seventies, honeymooned in the Midwest then rekindled a childhood spark. They wed July 17 after reconnecting through Christmas cards, having each lost a spouse years earlier.
Ethiopia protests to the Greek government against Italian air passage over Greek territory en route to West Africa. Greece says bans on peace time flights are impossible. The Bank of Ethiopia refuses foreign exchange sales to conserve funds for war needs and Egypt moves to maintain order ahead of Mussonlini’s sons travel to Ethiopia for Italian army service.
Sunday morning crash on primary road No. 2 east of Washington involved three cars. Andy Blattner and Glenn Yearns collided as Blattner turned toward a filling station. Ben Bregge’s car, following, struck the mixup. Mrs. Bregge, Carolyn 14 months, Neta Yearns, and Wilma Yearns sustained cuts and bruises. one car suffered heavy damage.
The county’s bantam exhibitors won prizes at the state fair with Cushman and Hailey of Washington Iowa claiming the champion female in the game bantam class. Prall Bantam Yards of Washington Iowa took the ornamental bantam best. 4 H baby beeves showed strongly led by Merle Warner and locals with Marshall county leading multiple divisions and producing the grand champion 4 H fat beef shown by Clifford Goecke. Blue Ribbon swine and Cheviot results also noted with several county entries placing highly.
Brighton mourns John Madden age 70 who died from injuries after a August 6 accident in Princeton. Funeral set for 2:30 Tuesday at Brighton Presbyterian Church with burial at Hillcrest Cemetery. Survived by siblings Mary Bales Verne Madden Earl and Jennie, Grace Hoffmann, Myrtle Hanlon.
In Richland eight year old Maxine Derby daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter Derby drowned in the Skunk River north of town while swimming with siblings. Her brother Chris pulled the other two from danger but Maxine disappeared under an undertow and strong current delayed rescue. Funeral plans were not yet set.
Mrs. J. C. Huston died unexpectedly in Crawfordsville early Sunday. Funeral Tuesday at the residence with Rev. Myron Hayes and Rev. E Hebner presiding, burial in Crawfordsville cemetery. Surviving: husband Clyde Huston, son Cloyce K. Huston in Tirana Albania, daughter Mrs. William Dunn, mother Mrs. George McElroy, one granddaughter Elizabeth Warburton Huston.
No one was injured when westbound M. L. freight No. 97 derailed at switch junction two miles west of Brighton at 7 50 last evening. The engine left the track and turned over to a 45 degree angle.
Joe Heath 79 of Iowa reports he has attended every West Liberty Fair since the start of the series, a total of 78 fairs. A derailment interrupted coal transport as five cars left the rails with three demolished, 150 feet of track damaged, and crews working to clear the line by mid morning. The cause remains under investigation.
Washington notes outline of the 74th Congress major acts. Social security expands federal old age and welfare programs. Wagner Act guarantees union rights and establishes a federal labor relations board. Banking Act reorganizes the Fed to tighten monetary policy and insurance. relief appropriations total $4.8 billion for direct and work relief. new taxes target estates and profitable corporations. Also includes revisions to AAA and TVA policy, airmail rate review, interstate transportation regulation, railroad pensions, Spanish war veterans’ pensions, NRA extension, and rural bond programs.
Mrs I A Endsley 78 a lifelong Columbus Junction resident died at home after a long illness. Funeral at United Presbyterian church Columbus City Wednesday at 2 PM with Rev C S Ramsdale officiating. Burial in Columbus City cemetery. Survived by husband, a daughter Mrs W E Whetstine, son Willard, seven grandchildren, four sisters and a brother.
Troop F of the 118th Cavalry arrives back after two weeks at Camp Dodge with Iowa National Guard units. Captain Jay Brown praises the camp as the best yet, noting good weather and ideal camping spots. Few injuries reported. Roy Glider hurt an arm but not broken. Cecil Woodford sent home with a severe cold.
Washington's second community broadcast over station WHO will be made this evening starting at 7 30. Many eastern Ioga people are expected to listen. Richard McCleery will speak with musical numbers by Pierce Knox on the xylophone Mrs Marjorie Phillips and Mrs Dorothy Hender on piano and Maurice Mayo on trombone.
Groups of Dutch Creek residents begin this afternoon tidying the grounds near Valley church for the Dutch Creek fair to be held Thursday. The site is the same as last summer and should be in fine shape by Thursday. Tickets for the chicken dinner in the evening by community women are selling well.
President Roosevelt and senate leaders argued at the White House over ending the agrarian revolt and adjourning Congress. Southern demands for higher cotton loans and wheat loans stalled plans to adjourn by midnight, with House backing opposition to loans.
Washington warned Moscow to curb Communist activity and sever plans affecting the United States. Ambassador Hullitt delivered a vigorous protest demanding Moscow halt such actions, signaling a sharp downturn in official relations since World War II era.
Ex senator W. S. Brookhart, now a foreign trade adviser, says he will sail next month to Soviet Russia on his own initiative. He aims to open trade channels for American farm products, starting with cotton purchases and possibly later live stock deals.
