Wind toppled Waco Drive In Theater screen in storm

A wind storm at the east edge of Washington destroyed the huge screen at the Waco Drive In Theater. The top portion was blown off, possibly by a small twister. The theater will close for the rest of the summer for repairs. Journal photo by Jim Mallory.

Destructive Iowa Storm Strikes Many Counties

Tornadoes cut a path through Howard Winneshiek and Clayton counties causing farm damage and injuries. A tornado touched down north of Lime Springs, devastating parts of Decorah, and the Ridgeway area saw multiple funnel clouds. One man, Lawrence Kayler, was injured when his barn collapsed. A woman, Mrs. Mable Ninemier, was treated for a shoulder injury after a door was tossed by winds.

Three Quarter Century Club Adds Thirty-Two Members

Thirty-two new members enroll in the Three Quarter Century Club and will join existing members for a Saturday noon dinner at the Methodist Church. Rev. Stan Woeste, pastor of Brighton Methodist Church and associate pastor of the local church, will speak at the post dinner program.

Teachers Invited to 1965 Fall Workshop Conference

Iowa teachers may attend the 1965 Fall Workshop Conference on October 8 9 at the State 4H Camping Center near Luther Iowa. The theme Effective Conservation Teaching How To Do It underscores a two day program sponsored by the Iowa Conservation Education Council the State Department of Public Instruction and the State Conservation Commission. Chairman Fred Dorheim of the Iowa Geological Survey leads the event open to teachers at all levels plus school administrators and conservation leaders. Contact local soil conservation district offices for details.

Perdock Returns From Aberdeen Camp Duties

Lt. Col. William H. Perdock has returned from Aberdeen Maryland where he instructed an officer career course during a two week summer camp. Five local students also attended and graduated from the four year course. Graduates include Majors Harold A. Stephens and Truman Hysell of Washington, Capt. Jim Helmick of Columbus Junction, Capt. Louis Gase of Riverside, and Capt. Robert Jones of Sigourney.

Washington County Storm Bloodies Utilities and Waco Drive In

Wires down, strong winds, heavy rain and hail caused extensive damage in Washington County about 7 p m Wednesday. Iowa Southern Utilities and General Telephone faced widespread outages with lines down. Crews worked through the night to restore service. The Waco drive in theater in Washington suffered major damage and will close for the season. Crop damage was limited overall, though some farms were hit hard. Local officials were praised for coordinating safety and cleanup efforts.

Storm cancels final band concert and Kiwanis ice cream social

A sudden storm last night forced cancellation of the Municipal Band concert in Central Park and scattered attendees at the Kiwanis Club ice cream social. Kiwanis president Wendell Eden announced the rescheduled ice cream event for Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Central Park.

Iowa State Fair Opens With 4-H Dress Revue And Strong Attendance Hopes

At the Iowa State Fair the 4-H dress revue featured girls modeling homemade fashions in the 4-H Exhibits Building. Horseshoe pitching, tractor pulling, livestock judging, and auto races filled the day as fairgoers anticipated attendance surpassing 500000 for the 107th exposition despite rumors of civil unrest. Governor Hughes activated National Guardsmen. morale remained excellent as troops toured the grounds in civilian clothing and prepared for training back at Camp Dodge.

Dupont plant blasts kill six at Louisville factory

Explosions and fire at the Dupont chemical plant in Louisville, Kentucky, left six dead, five missing, and 30 injured. Nearly 200 residents evacuated as fires burned, a mobile morgue was set up, and authorities searched for more victims amid extensive blast damage and a tentative safety scare.
