Johnson orders $1.5B Manned Orbiting Lab to orbit in 1968

President Johnson directs the Defense Department to fund a $1.5 billion Manned Orbiting Laboratory to launch in 1968 with two astronauts aboard. The cylinder shaped lab will be boosted by a Titan 3-C, attached to a Gemini capsule, and will conduct two weeks to a month of space experiments while advancing spaceflight technology and peaceful purposes.

Registration Monday for new and returning Washington schools

New teachers report today with orientation in the administrative building then meet principals. Students register Monday August 30 by last name, with kindergarten and Brighton pupils also on that day. Birth certificates required for registration. morning and afternoon slots depend on name initials.

Cattle Feeders Plan Arizona Tour For Iowa Group

Washington County residents may join a Farm Bureau cattle feeder tour to Flagstaff Arizona. Registration at the county office is required by September 24. Arizona hosts will showcase several thousand Hereford calves and yearlings on rangeland at 7000 feet in the ponderosa pine area during the week of October 25.

Washington Community High welcomes 169 freshmen and sophomores

About 169 students attended the annual pre school orientation at Washington Community High School Tuesday evening. Twelve new students joined as sophomores prepared to begin classes in the high school, with organ music, a welcome by Rex Neuhauser, and an introduction to Principal Burge Hammond and Assistant Principal Tom English.

Mid-Prairie Schools Opening Date Set for August 27

WELLMAN Mid-Prairie Community schools will open Friday August 27 with an anticipated enrollment of 1300 pupils. Kalona elementary and the junior and senior high start at 8 40 a m and end at 3 30 p m while Wellman and West Chester elementary start at 8 40 a m and end at 3 50 p m. Transportation schedules cause the variation and town students are advised not to arrive before 3 30 a m. The district will observe daylight saving time until after Labor Day.

Waco High School Band to Perform at Iowa State Fair

The Waco High School marching band will perform twice at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. The 70-member group, led by drum major Nancy Rhea and director Harold Dodd, travels from Olds on Saturday and appears at noon and 7 p.m. on Friday.

Jr high age dance at YMCA Saturday

The last YMCA sponsored junior high dance of the summer season will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the community room of the Y building. New seventh graders are invited to attend for the first time to meet new classmates and other junior high students. Cost is ten cents at the door with a 35 cent day pass for non members.

Cedar Falls Youth Shot Dead During Target Practice

A Cedar Falls youth, 17 year old Tom Koshatka, was killed instantly when another youth, 18 year old Brad DeHoff, accidentally fired a new .22 caliber rifle. DeHoff, unfamiliar with the gun, chambered a shell and misjudged that the bullet hadn’t entered. The shot struck Koshatka in the heart as he stood in front of him.

Nomination Papers Circulated For Wayne Davis In Washington

Local political scene today reports nomination papers circulated for Wayne Davis for councilman at large. Davis seeks re election to his current post. City clerk notes Mayor Cloid Willits has taken out nomination papers as well.

Committeemen Named In ASC Elections In Washington County

Washington County ASC elections list community committeemen chosen August 23 at polling places. Top five vote-getters become committee members for a year with chair and vice chair auto delegates to the county convention August 28 at 9 30 a m. The county committee and community appointees set policy explain programs and assign duties with committee members eligible for commodity sealing and farm work. Study merit system for state employees in Iowa

Iowa Governor Hughes said the Executive Council will study a proposed merit system for about 8,000 state workers, with final recommendations due December 15. The plan would replace the failed civil service bill from 1965, while Hughes pledges ongoing civil service advocacy. New minister Charles E. Cowell Jr. named pastor at First Christian Church

Rev. Charles E. Cowell Jr. is installed as pastor of the First Christian Church in Washington. He and his family will move into the parsonage at 309 West Second Street. Cowell, 41, arrives from Fargo where he led the First Chan Church and taught psychology at a local university while serving as VA Hospital chaplain. He holds degrees from George Washington University and Southern California School of Theology, including a doctorate of divinity. The first sermon is scheduled for Sunday, September 5.

Five Iowans honored for life saving at State Fair

Gov. Hughes awarded five Iowans for heroic acts during the 107th Iowa State Fair. Anthony Colbert Des Moines Ed ward Cotter Corning Robert Brinton Fort Dodge Jerome Haugland Cherokee and Dennis Goldman Delta were cited for rescuing people from danger in separate incidents. Cotter revived Ray Christ after a live wire contact, Goldman saved Wayne Goldman from the North Skunk River, Colbert pulled a coworker from electrical danger, and Brinton and Haugland helped rescue two victims from a burning car after a Fort Dodge crash.
