A meeting at the Y yesterday discussed preliminary plans for a sober peaceful Victory Day observance in Washington. G E Mace will head the effort with a postwar committee and a Sunday level of devotionals, safety and publicity managers named to coordinate the event.
A local meeting urged a sober Victory Day celebration in place of the 1918 revelry. Speakers including E R Barham and Rev Milo Phillips proposed constructive, memorable activities. The idea of making Victory Day a national bonds promotion was floated and referred to the Chamber of Commerce committee for possible adoption.
Names of 50 Washington County residents drawn to serve as petit jurors for the September term of district court were announced. The term opens September 11 with jurors reporting the second Monday. Judge Frank Reehly of Montezuma will preside.
Allied reports say American armored spearheads push beyond Troyes and Rheims toward the German frontier with Patton's tanks nearing 100 miles from Germany after crossing the Marne. Eisenhower warns Luxembourg and Alsace Lorraine that invading armies may roll into Germany soon. Brest assault follows a large air sea bombardment that disabled a German battery in the besieged port. Also, the Duchess of Gloucester bears a son, fifth in line to the British throne, as the Duke acts as governor-general designate to Australia.
Rainfall between 8:30 yesterday evening and noon today measured 1.12 inches. The shower was steady rather than heavy or violent, with cool temperatures around 72 degrees and last night’s low near 65. By noon today the thermometer read higher.

The Red Cross surgical dressings work room will reopen Tuesday under Mrs. R A Frink. After receiving the September and October quota, women are urged to begin making bandages for the local group.
In Cedar Rapids on August 26 visitors under 14 were barred at St Luke s and Mercy hospitals as a precautionary measure against infantile paralysis amid reports of new cases.
In a joint statement medical staffs of the two hospitals advised the discontinuance of tonsillectomies and adenoectomies until the danger has passed.
Iceland Foreign Minister Vilhjalmur Thor announced no U S request for permanent peacetime bases in Iceland during a joint press conference with President Sveinn Bjornsson. He noted Icelanders expect the United States to withdraw its military and naval forces immediately after the current international emergency ends and rejected any suggestion of basing plans by lease or ownership.
Des Moines Aug 28. Iowa attorney general rules sheriffs may use own cars for required travel at 7 1/4 cents per mile. Transporting prisoners or patients differs, at 4.75 cents within home county, 5 cents outside, and 7 cents for outside-county pursuits. Electric eyes detect defective grenades at 4,000 per hour.
Allied and French forces tightened control of Paris after German surrender. American columns pushed past Troyes toward the southeast and a new bridgehead crossed the Marne toward Rheims while others moved toward Le Havre and Avignon. Soviet and Balkan actions report rapid advances into Romania and near Bucharest as German forces collapse.
