Des Moines Brig. Gen. Charles H. Grahl state selective service director reports Iowa October draft call roughly matches September levels. He notes the September figure was the lowest since the program began.
Arlo Miller, 15, son of Mr and Mrs Emil Miller farmers five miles northwest of Ute, died in a Sioux City hospital from injuries suffered when a wagon ran over him on the farm. He fell from the wagon when the horses frightened and bolted Wednesday morning.
Five trustees were selected for William Penn College at the Friends yearly meeting in Oskaloosa. The board includes Guy Hunting Muscatine Roy C Rich Oskaloosa Carl Binford Weldon Charles Maxwell Far l ham and Charles Wood New Providence. New yearly meeting trustees are Warren Cadwallader and Terrell Kessler both of Oskaloosa.
Iowa liquor stores posted July sales of 1.49 million dollars, up from June's 1.58 million as reported by the Liquor Control Commission.
Iowa's health department reports an unprecedented rise in venereal disease exposure in 1944. Dr. A C Wooster notes a 49 percent increase in tracing contacts of known cases in the first six months of the current war due to patient cooperation. Contacts are those reliably reported as exposed or not yet treated. The only way to identify exposure is through information from patients under treatment.
Dorothy O Holm of Council Bluffs said she would not take her husband’s place as she joined WAC recruiting HQs. Her husband Tech Sergt Darcy L Holm, a B 24 flight engineer with the 14th Air Force in China, was killed in action. Her brother Master Sergeant Carl R Jordan serves in the Army Air Forces in the South Pacific.
Waterloo is told there will be less confusion about the Smith girls after Sept. 2 as Marigene Smith heads to Chicago to sing in a U.S.O. recreation center with dreams of stardom. Joanne Smith from Reinbeck and Georgia Smith from Traer will still receive calls for Miss Smith.

Betty and Hazel Sojka of the Farmerettes won the grand championship with Our Milk Today the Ice Cream Way at the county 4-H show. Mary Catherine Knotek and Frances Sojka were reserve champions with Nutritious Delicious Kolaches. 13 demonstrations by nine clubs were judged by Ames judge Mrs. Winifred Jones.
Tokyo radio said allied forces landed on Mapia Island 125 miles north of Manokwari Dutch New Guinea yesterday but faced heavy losses and no confirmation from allies. bombers raided areas off Sumatra and Halmahera as Japanese base at Managu remained encircled.
London reports Romania declared war on Germany after a Luftwaffe attack on Bucharest. Moscow notes Romanian troops, ordered by King Michael, surrender in large numbers as Red Army advances toward Ploesti and Galati gap. German resistance continues at points while Balkans tremble amid Romania’s capitulation.
County rationing board announces that application blanks for A books have been sent to distribution centers in Washington County. Requests by mail are welcome and drivers may be left without new gas rations after September 21 if forms are incomplete.
Mrs. Osa Knerr of Kearney Nebraska says on a letter that the Journal’s August 16 report of her son Pfe Fireman Gale Knerr as a prisoner of war is incorrect She has not received word from the war department confirming any POW status.
The Congress hotel and cafe will open Sunday August 27 after a thorough clean. New furnishings are limited due to time and material shortages while conditions improve. Mrs Abbie Dreibelbis former Crestmoor dining room manager is the new manager. Leo Healey the purchaser is an attorney from Creston who also owns the Sidney hotel. Public inspection is welcome and the hotel will be open day and night.
A speaker reports Gale is alive and believes he is in the same prison camp. They have sent a card to the war department to aid locating Gale and seek confirmation.
Principal Ethel McCreedy announces the Washington junior high registration for the new year starting September 6. Seventh graders register August 30 and eighth graders August 31, 9 am to 12 pm and 1 pm to 4 pm, at the high school building. Books rent 25 cents, except arithmetic and spelling, with locker keys also 25 cents.
Funeral services for Will Davis were held yesterday afternoon at the L A Jones funeral home with four ministers taking part Rev W Z Allen of Bethel Presbyterian Rev F W Eastwood of Washington Presbyterian and two other ministers officiating Pallbearers included Fred Shaw Alvin Shaw and Godfrey Juzeler
Dr. Fred Miller of the Methodist church will preach at the union church in Central Park next Sunday evening. The final service of the 1944 summer union series features a "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" sermon, with music by a 40-voice Methodist men's chorus led by Herbert Osineup. If weather fails, service will move to the Baptist church.
Mrs Ethel Curtis received a letter from her son Private Donald Curtis who was wounded in France He said he was getting along and would send home the Purple Heart at the first chance He wrote earlier that he had been hit in the shoulder and arm
Firefighters were dispatched to the John Long home on North Avenue B late yesterday as a stove fire caused light damage described as slight. No injuries are reported.
Nate Pearson, Harry Dye and Howard Crozier are identified with burial in Elm Grove cemetery in a brief notice.
U P reports Paris garrisons surrendered with arms and equipment. Allied forces drive German 7th Army from northern France toward the Rhine as four Allied armies converge on Le Havre. Canadian troops move along the coast toward Honfleur while Parisites join with American tanks and riflemen to secure the city.
American forces captured Cannes and pressed toward Lyon as fighting stretched 15 miles south of the city. A UPI dispatch from Annecy reported an American column possibly moving from Grenoble, with Annecy flying flags in anticipation of arrival. French forces tightened the encirclement of Toulon and Tonline garrison struggles continued.
